The involvement of the subtalar joint is uncommon in the early stages of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We report a case of a 47-year-old female who had RA with isolated subtalar joint arthritis. The clinical history, magnetic resonance imaging, and pathological findings of the patient are presented. A careful evaluation of the patients for chronic ankle-to-heel pain should be conducted, and concomitant evaluation for inflammatory arthritis, including RA, should be considered.

It is important to evaluate the subtalar joint and hip-knee-ankle alignment to understand lower extremity alignment. In this review, we focused on the compensatory changes in the subtalar joint alignment for the deformity of the knee and ankle joint, reviewing previous research. The subtalar joint alignment was compensatory valgus in patients with varus knee and ankle deformity, whereas it was uncertain whether the subtalar joint alignment was compensatory varus in patients with valgus knee and ankle deformity. The subtalar joint valgus alignment improved after total knee arthroplasty or high

Severely comminuted intra-articular calcaneal fractures often culminate in subtalar arthrosis and stiffness even after operative reduction. In some instances, subtalar arthrodesis is necessary to reduce the symptoms. Primary subtalar arthrodesis for these fractures has gained acceptance in recent years. However, few definite predictors of functional outcome after primary fusion have been found. A series of 17 patients with highly comminuted fractures were studied to determine which radiographic parameters were predictive of functional outcome. The standard incisional approaches for ankle and subtalar joint surgery include the medial, lateral, or anterior. However, in patients with a history of traumatic injuries or previous surgery, in which the soft tissues of the foot and ankle have been compromised, a direct midline posterior approach might be preferable. The approach offers unparalleled exposure, provides excellent frontal plane visualization, and reduces the risk of vascular compromise by preserving the surrounding angiosomes. We report on 2 separate cases in which a midline posterior approach to the ankle and subtalar joints w

There have been only a few studies in the literature that reported on the outcome of ankle arthrodesis in patients with haemophilia; furthermore, the number of patients was usually low and the operative technique has not been uniform. The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcome of surgery in haemophilic arthropathy of the ankle and subtalar joints, using internal fixation. From 1983 to 2006, 20 fusions were performed in 13 patients with advanced haemophilic arthropathy of the ankle and subtalar joints. There were 11 ankle fusions, one isolated subtalar fusion and eight combined ankle and

Treatment options for degenerative joint disease of the ankle and subtalar joints are limited. When conservative management fails, the only effective procedure is arthrodesis. With the advent of the small arthroscope and the development of better instrumentation and distraction techniques, small joint arthroscopy has gained popularity as an important diagnostic and therapeutic tool in the treatment of ankle and subtalar disorders. Although the benefits of arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis are well established, and arthroscopic subtalar arthrodesis has been described recently, the role of arthrosc

The normal and post-traumatic appearances of the sub-talar joints are illustrated by means of a number of arthrograms. Special projections were used in order to demonstrate various parts of the joints. The mobility of the articulating bones and its relationship to the trabecular structure has been demonstrated. The mechanism of typical injuries in normal limbs, and in the presence of pes planus, is described. Radiological features of capsular injuries of the sub-talar joint have been studied by arthrography.

BACKGROUND: Foot issues caused by High-heeled shoes (HHS) may be related to changed kinematics. This study aimed to use novel dynamic biplane radiography (DBR) to investigate the effect of HHS on the in vivo six degrees of freedom (6DOF) kinematics of the talocrural and subtalar joints.
METHODS: Fourteen healthy female participants were recruited. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan images of each participant's ankle were used to create three-dimensional (3D) bone models. Two-dimensional (2D) motion perspective views of the foot were captured by DBR while walking with and without HHS. The 2

Background/Objectives: A standard method for the measurement of subtalar joint motion has yet to be developed. This study aimed to determine which of the two methods (AMA and modified McBride) for the measurement of subtalar joint motion better reflects subtalar joint stiffness. Methods: We evaluated the intraobserver and interobserver reliability and validity of the two methods in the normal group (n = 50) and the patient group (n = 90; 30 with normal hindfoot, 30 with ankle joint pathology, and 30 with subtalar joint pathology). We assessed the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and re

BACKGROUND: Although correction of ankle and hindfoot deformity after supramalleolar osteotomy has been investigated extensively, the specific effect on the subtalar joint alignment remains elusive. This can be attributed to the limitations of 2-dimensional measurements, which impede an exact quantification of the 3-dimensional subtalar joint alignment. Therefore, we determined both the ankle, hindfoot, and subtalar joint alignment before and after supramalleolar osteotomy using autogenerated 3-dimensional measurements based on weightbearing CT imaging.
METHODS: Twenty-nine patients with a me

This case has been reported because of its rarity and atypical clinical presentation. An 8-year-old boy presented with a gradually increasing swelling localised on the antero-medial aspect of the foot haemogram, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), Mantoux and X-ray chest were normal. An irregular lytic lesion of the talus was seen on the x-ray of the affected part. Ziehl Nelson staining of the aspirated fluid revealed acid-fast bacilli. Material obtained after curettage and bone grafting was sent for histopathological examination which confirmed the diagnosis of tuberculosis. Post operativel

Acute and chronic subtalar instability and commonly coexistent with other hindfoot pathology but can be difficult to diagnose. A high degree of clinical suspicion is required as most imaging modalities and clinical maneuvers are poor at detecting isolated subtalar instability. The initial treatment is similar to ankle instability, and a wide variety of operative interventions have been presented in the literature for persistent instability. Outcomes are variable and limited.

Charcot's neuroarthropathy can have devastating consequences if left untreated or misdiagnosed. With progression of the disease from the acute to the chronic phase, substantial deformity and instability may result, leading to ulceration and a nonfunctional limb. The purpose of this case report is to present a staged reconstruction for active Charcot's neuroarthropathy involving the subtalar joint with complete dislocation that resulted in limb salvage and maintenance of limb function at 1-year follow-up. Although for many patients the mainstay of treatment for early Charcot's neuroarthropathy

Many authors have discussed the various surgical techniques of subtalar joint arthroereisis in the treatment of flexible flatfoot. Some authors advocate the use of bone grafts in the sinus tarsi to limit excessive subtalar joint pronation, while others advocate the use of endoprosthetic devices. These authors will present a retrospective study of subtalar joint arthroereisis utilizing a SILASTIC silicone sphere technique devised by the senior authors.

BACKGROUND: Subtalar arthrodesis is a commonly performed procedure for the treatment of posttraumatic or primary osteoarthritis and several hindfoot deformities. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a minimally invasive technique for cartilage removal of the subtalar joint using a modified sinus tarsi approach.
METHODS: An anatomical study was performed on 8 pairs of fresh frozen cadaveric feet. A modified 2.5-cm sinus tarsi approach was used to access the subtalar joint. Cartilage removal was performed in 2 groups using either a 13-mm Shannon burr (GB

Ten patients were treated who had occult osteochondral fractures of the subtalar joint that were not associated with dislocation. Nine osteochondral fractures involved the posterior facet. Seven patients had a stiff and painful subtalar joint, and an arthrodesis was performed. Three patients presented with adequate subtalar joint motion and were treated with physiotherapy. Detection of osteochondral fractures of the subtalar joint is difficult. The "early warning" signs are massive swelling without definitive bone injury on radiographic examination, and a failure to regain subtalar motion afte

Subtalar joint (STJ) arthrodesis is a well-established and accepted surgical procedure utilized for the treatment of various hindfoot conditions including primary or posttraumatic subtalar osteoarthritis, hindfoot valgus deformity, hindfoot varus deformity, complex acute calcaneal fracture, symptomatic residual congenital deformity, tarsal coalition, and other conditions causing pain and deformity about the hindfoot. Union rates associated with isolated subtalar joint arthrodesis are generally thought to be favorable, though reports have varied significantly, with non-union rates ranging from

Subtalar joint distraction arthrodesis has been recommended for the treatment of conditions such as nonunion or malunion of subtalar joint arthrodesis posttraumatic arthritis. Both conditions are difficult to treat, because the deformities created in the frontal and sagittal planes of these conditions are complex. If these malalignments are not addressed, ankle joint instability and wear occur over time. In general, either autograft or allograft bone has been used to perform distraction arthrodesis of the subtalar joint. Although studies have shown successful use, there have been complications

Subtalar joint arthrodesis is a common treatment for the management of hindfoot pathologic entities. Despite pain reduction, hindfoot stiffness is a common concern of active patients, who wish to continue or start exercising for fitness. The purpose of the present retrospective observational clinical study was to assess the rate and type of recreational sports activities in patients before and after subtalar joint arthrodesis and to correlate the clinical outcome and the level of sports activities. In 33 patients (22 males, 11 females) treated with subtalar joint arthrodesis, the pre- and post
