Residential context and cognitive aging: Differences by urbanicity across the retirement transition.

OBJECTIVES: Cognitive aging is shaped by biological and social processes that unfold across the life course and the contexts in which they occur. Retirement may coincide with faster cognitive decline. Because cognitively supportive resources differ across places, this study assesses whether residential context (urban, suburban, rural/ex-urban) moderates cognitive trajectories before and after retirement. METHODS: Data were drawn from the U.S. Health and Retirement Study (2000-2020; n = 3,675). We estimated within-person change in cognition before and after retirement and included interaction

Sterilization, Infecundity, and Reproductive Autonomy in Rural, Suburban, and Urban America: Results From a National Survey.

OBJECTIVE: Rural women are significantly more likely than urban women to be sterilized. This study aims to understand why rural women depend so heavily on this method of fertility control, whether they are more likely than suburban and urban women to desire sterilization reversal, and the impact of female sterilization on rural women's ability to achieve their fertility goals. METHODS: Data from 10,081 sexually active women aged 15 to 49, who participated in the National Survey of Family Growth (2015-2019), were analyzed using binary and multinomial logistic regression analyses. Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and Free-Roaming Cats (Felis catus) Across a Suburban to Urban Gradient in Northeastern Ohio.

Felids serve as the definitive host of Toxoplasma gondii contaminating environments with oocysts. White-tailed deer (WTD; Odocoileus virginianus) are used as sentinel species for contaminated environments as well as a potential source for human foodborne infection with T. gondii. Here we determine the seroprevalence of T. gondii in a WTD and felid population, and examine those risk factors that increase exposure to the parasite. Serum samples from 444 WTD and 200 free-roaming cats (Felis catus) from urban and suburban reservations were tested for T. gondii antibodies using the modified aggluti

Assessing the health literacy levels of patients using selected hospital services.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess the health literacy abilities of patients in an urban and suburban hospital. BACKGROUND: Inadequate health literacy is a widespread problem that is associated with insufficient self-care knowledge and behavior, inappropriate use of emergency services, higher rates of hospitalization, and increased healthcare costs. Knowledge of patients' reading ability is necessary to ensure that appropriately leveled printed health education materials are available. METHODS: The health literacy of a convenience sample of 21 inpatients and 34 outpatients from an

Concentration, pathogenic composition, and exposure risks of bioaerosol in large indoor public environments: A comparative study of urban and suburban areas.

Biological contamination in larger indoor environments can lead to the outbreak of various infectious diseases. This study aimed to compare the pollution profiles and associated health risks of airborne microorganisms in different indoor settings between urban and suburban areas by culturing, sequencing, and toxicological evaluation. The results indicated that the average level of culturable bacteria was higher in urban areas (955 ± 259 CFU/m3) compared to suburban areas (850 ± 85 CFU/m3), with the highest concentrations found in the market (2170 ± 798 CFU/m3) and gymnasium (2010 ± 300 CFU/m3)

Rural living environment predicts social anxiety in transgender and gender nonconforming individuals across Canada and the United States.

Transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) individuals frequently confront discrimination, rejection, and violence. Such experiences may put TGNC individuals at risk for minority stress and associated psychiatric symptoms. Protective factors like social support, pride in one's gender identity, or connectedness to similar others may make TGNC individuals less vulnerable to psychiatric symptoms, and the presence of risk and protective factors may vary depending on living environment. This study examined the relationship of living environment (urban vs. suburban vs. small-town/rural) to social a

Comparison of tick-borne pathogen prevalence in Ixodes ricinus ticks collected in urban areas of Europe.

Tick-borne diseases are a major threat to human and animal health. An increasing number of natural habitats have been transformed into urban areas by human activity; hence, the number of reported tick bites in urban and suburban areas has risen. This retrospective analysis evaluated 53 scientific reports concerning infections of Ixodes ricinus ticks collected from urban and suburban areas of Europe between 1991 and 2017. The results indicate significant differences in many variables, including a higher number of Anaplasma phagocytophilum infections in Eastern Europe than in Western Europe. The

Associations between injection risk and community disadvantage among suburban injection drug users in southwestern Connecticut, USA.

Increases in drug abuse, injection, and opioid overdoses in suburban communities led us to study injectors residing in suburban communities in southwestern Connecticut, US. We sought to understand the influence of residence on risk and injection-associated diseases. Injectors were recruited by respondent-driven sampling and interviewed about sociodemographics, somatic and mental health, injection risk, and interactions with healthcare, harm reduction, substance abuse treatment, and criminal justice systems. HIV, hepatitis B and C (HBV and HCV) serological testing was also conducted. Our sample

[Work-related stress and psychological distress assessment in urban and suburban public transportation companies].

The risk of work-related stress has been determined in bus drivers and workers employed in the service department of two urban and suburban public transportation companies. The INAIL evaluation method (Check list and HSE indicator tool) was used. The GHQ-12 questionnaire, which is widely used to assess the level of psychological distress, was also employed. 81.9% of workers involved in the survey answered both the HSE indicator tool and the GHQ-12 questionnaire. The Check list evaluation showed an increase in quantifiable company stress indicators while close examination using the HSE indicato

Listeria monocytogenes at the human-wildlife interface: black bears (Ursus americanus) as potential vehicles for Listeria.

Listeria monocytogenes is the causative agent of the foodborne illness listeriosis, which can result in severe symptoms and death in susceptible humans and other animals. L. monocytogenes is ubiquitous in the environment and isolates from food and food processing, and clinical sources have been extensively characterized. However, limited information is available on L. monocytogenes from wildlife, especially from urban or suburban settings. As urban and suburban areas are expanding worldwide, humans are increasingly encroaching into wildlife habitats, enhancing the frequency of human-wildlife c

Accessibility to health care facilities in Montreal Island: an application of relative accessibility indicators from the perspective of senior and non-senior residents.

BACKGROUND: Geographical access to health care facilities is known to influence health services usage. As societies age, accessibility to health care becomes an increasingly acute public health concern. It is known that seniors tend to have lower mobility levels, and it is possible that this may negatively affect their ability to reach facilities and services. Therefore, it becomes important to examine the mobility situation of seniors vis-a-vis the spatial distribution of health care facilities, to identify areas where accessibility is low and interventions may be required. METHODS: Accessib

PM10 elemental composition and acute respiratory health effects in European children (PEACE project). Pollution Effects on Asthmatic Children in Europe.

The ability of particles with a 50% cut-off aerodynamic diameter of 10 microm (PM10) to cause respiratory health effects possibly depends on their composition. This study evaluated whether the soluble elemental concentrations in PM10 were related to acute respiratory health effects. The Pollution Effects on Asthmatic Children in Europe (PEACE) study is a multicentre study of the acute effects of PM10 and other air pollution components on the respiratory health of children with chronic respiratory symptoms in urban and suburban panels. Children, 1208, divided among 17 panels were followed for >

Transport accessibility and hospital attributes: A nonlinear analysis of their impact on Women's prenatal care seeking behavior.

Ensuring women receive vital prenatal care is crucial for maternal and newborn health. Limited research explores factors influencing prenatal care-seeking from a geospatial perspective. This study, based on a substantial Wuhan dataset (23,947 samples), investigates factors influencing prenatal care-seeking, focusing on transport accessibility and hospital attributes. Findings indicate a nuanced relationship: (1) A non-linear trend, resembling an inverted "U," reveals the complex interplay between transport accessibility, hospital attributes, and prenatal care visits. Hospital attributes have a

Donegal Going against the Flow: National Differences in Long-Term Urinary Catheterisation Rates in Men (> 65 Years) With Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy.

An analysis of Primary Care Reimbursement Service (PCRS, 2013) data demonstrated high rates of urinary catheter changes in Donegal compared to other regions of Ireland. There is a catheter change rate of 10.2% in Donegal men over 65 with medical cards (GMS) compared to rates of 2.7% and 0.17% in Waterford and South Dublin, respectively1. This 60-fold difference between an area with perceived good access to services (South Dublin) and Donegal an area that does not, prompted a survey of general practitioners in each of these areas to assess whether true male catheterisation rates were similarly
