The potential cost-effectiveness of mandatory restrictions on price promotions for sugar-sweetened beverages in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Restricting price promotions on unhealthy foods and beverages has been identified by governments as a promising approach for improving population diets. Using a limited societal perspective, this study assessed the potential cost-effectiveness of mandatory restrictions on price promotions for sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) in Australia. METHODS: Australian dietary consumption data, together with UK data on the SSB sales uplift associated with price promotions, were used to estimate reductions in SSB purchases and consequent changes in body mass index following the intervention.

Predicting sugar-sweetened beverage intake from the brain and known risk factors in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Low socio-economic status, male sex, and body mass index (BMI) are known risk factors for high sugar sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption in adolescents. The present analysis aimed to predict SSB intake based on known risk factors and resting-state functional magnetic resonance (rsfMRI) connectivity from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study. METHODS: Using the year-2 follow up visit Block Kids Food Screener data, participants were categorized as low SSB consumers (<8 floz/day) or high SSB consumers (>16 floz/day). The high and low groups were matched on baseline age, B

The role of exclusive breastfeeding and sugar-sweetened beverage consumption on preschool children's weight gain.

BACKGROUND: Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and breastfeeding practices have been recognized as important factors linked to children's weight status. However, no other studies have simultaneously investigated the role of each factor on children's conditional weight gain (CWG). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of exclusive breastfeeding (EB) and the SSBs consumption on CWG from birth to the survey date among Brazilian preschool children (24-59 months old). METHODS: A nationally represented cross-sectional survey with complex probability sampling (n = 2421) was conducted. The outcome variable

Correlation between sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and obesity among adults in Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: In Saudi Arabia, obesity represents a major population health challenge, driven largely by unhealthy lifestyle behaviors, including excessive intake of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). Nevertheless, there is a lack of evidence on the interactions between different categories of beverages and lifestyle and behavior factors that will determine the risk of obesity. METHODS: This study used secondary data from the 2021 Sharik Diet and Health National Survey, a nationally representative cross-sectional phone survey in Saudi Arabia. A quota sampling approach stratified by age, sex, and

Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Warning Labels and Taxes: Simulated Impacts When Considering Implementation.

INTRODUCTION: Sugar-sweetened beverage warning label and excise tax policies hold promise for preventing Type 2 diabetes. Population-level impacts of sugar-sweetened beverage policies have been projected using simulation models, but the authors are unaware of any assessing the effect of warning labels on Type 2 diabetes or the effects of warning label and tax effects using the same modeling assumptions. Simulation models have also rarely considered how policy implementation factors such as design and sustainment affect policy outcomes. METHODS: Microsimulation model of Type 2 diabetes develop

The impact of health taxes on consumption of tobacco and sugar-sweetened beverages in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.

Consumption of tobacco, nicotine and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) poses a significant risk to public health, contributing to increases in noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and obesity. Globally, regular consumption of SSBs increases the risk of type 2 diabetes by 26%, and deaths related to tobacco and nicotine consumption exceed 8 million annually, including 1.3 million due to exposure to second-hand smoke. This loss of lives and the negative impact on health underscore the urgent need for effective public health interventions to curb the con

Assessing sugar-sweetened beverage consumption in early pregnancy using a substance abuse framework.

Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) are previously reported to jeopardize maternal fetal health, most well-known for gestational diabetes, childhood obesity, and cognitive impairment. Although warnings and diet recommendations urge pregnant women to consume less SSB, there is no noticeable difference in their behavior. How and why reproductive women change their SSB consumption patterns were not investigated previously. Our study aims to investigate beverage consumption patterns and how these patterns change in pregnancy in the context of substance use disorder (SUD). We invited all pregnant women

Frontostriatal and behavioral adaptations to daily sugar-sweetened beverage intake: a randomized controlled trial.

Background: Current obesity theories suggest that the repeated intake of highly palatable high-sugar foods causes adaptions in the striatum, parietal lobe, and prefrontal and visual cortices in the brain that may serve to perpetuate consumption in a feed-forward manner. However, the data for humans are cross-sectional and observational, leaving little ability to determine the temporal precedence of repeated consumption on brain response. Objective: We tested the impact of regular sugar-sweetened beverage intake on brain and behavioral responses to beverage stimuli.Design: We performed an experi

Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Tax Intensification, Beverage Affordability, and Food-Security Safeguards: Global Evidence from 2022-2024.

Sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) taxes aim to discourage unhealthy consumption, but their implications for broader food affordability also need monitoring. We examine whether changes in SSB excise-tax shares between 2022 and 2024 were associated with beverage affordability, healthy-diet affordability, and food insecurity. The analysis links WHO beverage-tax data with FAO food-system indicators and World Bank controls. First-difference models include 83-113 countries, depending on the outcome, with adjustment for multiple testing. A one-percentage-point increase in excise share was associated wit

Sugar-sweetened beverages and acute metabolic crises in type 2 diabetes mellitus: a report of two cases.

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is an uncommon but serious complication in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Excessive intake of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) may represent an underrecognized trigger for DKA in individuals with T2DM. We present two male patients with T2DM who developed ketosis following excessive consumption of SSBs (aerated drinks). The first patient, aged 33 years, reported consuming 2.5 litre/day of SSBs and developed ketosis without acidosis. The second, aged 18 years, reported daily intake of 4 litre/day of SSBs and presented with frank DKA. Both patients were

Taxation of sugar-sweetened beverages: Perspectives of adults and nursing practitioners in Makhanda, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: High sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption has been linked to the rising prevalence of obesity and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in South Africa. In April 2018, the country introduced an SSB tax-known as the Health Promotion Levy (HPL)-as a fiscal measure to reduce excessive sugar consumption and curb the rise of overweight, obesity, and NCDs. Although national evidence indicates product reformulation, community-level awareness and perceptions, particularly in low-socioeconomic settings, remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: To assess adults' awareness, beliefs, and self-reported be

Circular RNAs mediate the regulation of maternal placental nutrient transport and fetal development by sugar-sweetened beverages.

Epidemiological and experimental studies have demonstrated a strong association between maternal diet and fetal birth weight, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. We investigated the pathways and modes of action of circular RNAs (circRNAs) that mediate the regulation of maternal reproductive performance and fetal development by sugar-sweetened beverages (20 % sucrose water, SSBs) using C57BL/6J mice as a model. Results showed that SSBs significantly increased the reproductive performance (P<0.05), body weight (P<0.01), fetal birth weight (P<0.05), placental weight (P<0.01), and the expression of n
