Attempted suicide is an act associated with childhood sexual abuse, depression, bipolar illness, substance abuse, and other diagnoses, as documented in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition (DSM-IV) (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 1994). Three women, who attended a group to decrease their depression and increase their self-esteem and who had histories of multiple suicide attempts, agreed to participate in interviews designed to determine the common factors associated with their suicide attempts and to examine the assertion that their suicide attempt

Suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts are an integral part of various depressions. Suicide attempts are common in major depression but even more common in recurrent brief depression, and the rate is further increased when these depressions occur comorbidly. Combined depression, where recurrent brief depression and major depression coexist, is the strongest clinical predictor of suicide attempts in the literature. There have been very few controlled studies of treatments for depression in high-risk groups of suicide attempters. Psychotherapy has been found to significantly raise the suicide at

This review summarizes the published literature on suicide by jumping, in particular focusing on the social and psychological characteristics of people who have chosen this method of suicide, and the opportunities for prevention. Suicide by jumping accounts for 5% of suicides in England and Wales, and there are marked variations in the use of this method world-wide. A number of locations have gained notoriety as popular places from which to jump. Such sites include The Golden Gate Bridge and Niagara Falls in the USA, and Beachy Head and the Clifton Suspension Bridge in the UK. There is no cons

This article presents the epidemiology of suicide with a special focus on suicides among the elderly, and discusses the known risk factors for suicide within a framework designed to encourage a systematic approach to theory testing and prevention. Throughout the world, suicide rates are highest among the elderly. The risk factors for suicide can be classified as distal or proximal, and, within these broad categories, as sociodemographic, psychiatric, biological, familial, and situational. Mental and addictive disorders are the major risk factors for suicide in all age groups. Other risk factor

1397 consecutive suicides were committed in Finland in 1987. 60 (4.3%) of these involved cancer patients, 25 of whom were in remission, 18 in the terminal phase and 17 at other stages of their illness. The background of every case was explored by a structured interview of health care personnel and intimate associates and by examining medical and other case records. The factors connected with and motives for suicide were compared in the two patient groups, the terminally ill and the patients who committed suicide during remission. These groups differed markedly, with the latter having more hist

This article is a short review of associations between depression and suicide, and formed part of a symposium held in Munich in August 1988 to discuss toxicity in antidepressive therapy. The association between depressive disorders and suicide is well documented. The detailed characteristics of this association, however, are still under discussion. Phenomenological aspects of depression seem to be more important than nosological ones, especially associations between personality traits, aggression and depression. Differentiation of depressions into primary and secondary depressive disorders (th

A 73-year-old man committed suicide by placing a plastic bag over his head. At autopsy, a large meningioma of the frontal lobe of the brain was found. It is believed that the tumor contributed to death by its direct effect on the brain, causing depression. This article illustrates a relationship between disease, depression, and suicide and offers a brief review of the literature concerning this relationship.

It is well established that alcoholics have a very high suicide rate. The evidence is of two kinds: a) Follow up studies of alcoholics consistently reveal high suicide rates. The proportion dying by suicide varies from 8% (Kessel & Grossman, 1961) to 21% (Gabriel, 1935) depending on the length of follow up. These figures represent a risk 5080 times that of the general population. Most such studies were based on clinically identified populations of alcoholics and might not be representative of alcoholics in general. However: b) Retrospective studies of suicides consistently find that a high pro

BACKGROUND: Concerns about suicide risk in people with dementia have been increasing in recent years along with a discourse about rational suicide and assisted suicide.
METHODS: A systematic narrative literature review of suicidal behavior and assisted suicide in persons with dementia.
RESULTS: Most studies that have examined the spectrum of suicidal ideation, attempted suicide and suicide in dementia have methodological limitations but the overall suicide risk does not appear to be increased. When suicidal behavior does occur, common themes include the presence of psychiatric comorbidity, m

OBJECTIVE: Suicide is a major public health concern as each year 30000 people die by suicide in the USA alone. In the teenage population, it is the second leading cause of death. There have been extensive studies of psychosocial factors associated with suicide and suicidal behavior. However, very little is known about the neurobiology of suicide. Recent research has provided some understanding of the neurobiology of suicide, which is the topic of this review.
METHODS: Neurobiology of suicide has been studied using peripheral tissues such as platelets, lymphocytes, and cerebrospinal fluid obta

OBJECTIVE: In emergency medicine, suicides and attempted suicides represent a major challenge for emergency physicians (EPs) and paramedics, both in terms of psychiatric and somatic treatment. To date no investigations have been performed to determine prevalence rates, method of suicide or attempted suicide, and the problems faced by EPs when treating these patients. This investigation presents a first evaluation of the complete emergency protocols from a major German city focusing on suicide and parasuicide.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all EP protocols from 1995 in the city of Hambu

BACKGROUND: Suicide-specific rumination (SSR), that is repetitive negative thinking about suicide, has been proposed as a risk factor for suicidal behavior. Yet, few studies have investigated associations between SSR and suicide intent and planning in a longitudinal study design. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the association between SSR, suicide intent, suicide planning and suicide attempts in a sample of adult outpatients undergoing psychotherapy.
METHOD: Data from N = 637 patients (58.4% female, 41.6% male; Mage = 35.81, SDage = 13.50, range: 18-79 years) who started t

This study considers variables that best distinguish among attempters, ideators, and nonsuicidal youth in a sample of 527 homeless and runaway adolescents from four Midwestern states. Univariate results indicate that attempters are significantly more likely than ideators and nonsuicidal youth to have experienced physical or sexual abuse by an adult caretaker, to have experienced sexual victimization while on their own, and to have a friend who attempted suicide. Multivariate analyses reveal five variables that best distinguish among the three groups: self-esteem, depression, physical abuse, se

Adolescent non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicidality are serious health concerns; however, factors that contribute to the transition from NSSI to suicide ideation and suicide attempts are unclear. To address this gap, we investigated whether demographic characteristics, child maltreatment, and psychiatric factors are associated with the level suicidality among adolescents with a history of self-injury. Participants were three groups of adolescent inpatient self-injurers (n = 397, 317 female), aged 13-18 years (M = 15.44, SD = 1.36): (a) non-ideators (n = 96; no current suicide ideation a

Suicidal behavior among military personnel is of paramount public health importance because of the increased risk of death from suicide in this population. Pre- and post-Marine recruit training risk factors for suicide attempts among current and former Marines were examined in 10 years following recruit training. The characteristics of the subsample of current and former Marines who died by suicide during this time are also described. Stressful and traumatic life events (e.g., childhood physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, sexual harassment during recruit training) and pre-recruit training s

The influence of a family history of suicide on suicide attempt rate and characteristics in depression, schizophrenia, and opioid dependence was examined. One hundred sixty inpatients with unipolar depression, 160 inpatients with schizophrenia, and 160 opioid-dependent patients were interviewed. Overall, a family history of suicide was associated with a higher risk for suicide attempt, with high-lethality method, with repeated attempts, and with number of attempts, while the interaction between family history and diagnostic group was not significant. Thus, a positive family history of suicide

PRIMARY OBJECTIVES: There are many known suicide risk factors (SRF) common to major psychiatric disorders, but their impact on suicide vulnerability remains unclear. We used FALCON (Fuzzy Adaptive Learning Control Network) to evaluate those impacts.
METHODS: Staff psychiatrists completed computerized suicide risk scales (CSRS-III) including 21 SRF for 612 patients. Diagnoses were: schizophrenia, schizoaffective, major depression, anxiety disorder, bipolar affective disorder, personality disorder, organic brain syndromes, delusional disorder and other diagnoses. An optimal trained FALCON was o

The suicide rates in Denmark have been declining during the last two decades. The decline was relatively larger among women than among men. All age groups experienced a decline except the very young with stable rates and the very old with increasing rates. The Universal, Selective, Indicated (USI) model recommended by Institute of Medicine was used as a framework for the thesis. Universal preventive interventions are directed toward the entire population; selective interventions are directed toward individuals who are at greater risk for suicidal behaviour; and indicated preventions are target
