Suicidality is a serious cause of morbidity and mortality among young people. Important risk factors for suicidal behavior are mental illness, alcohol and other substance use disorders, previous suicide attempt, impulsive and/or aggressive behavior, history of abuse, and access to lethal means. Emotional well-being and connectedness to family and school act to buffer or protect young people from involvement in self-directed violence. BACKGROUND: When people have suicidal thoughts, risk assessment is usually conducted using the CASE approach.
AIM: To evaluate this approach.
METHOD: Reviewing research on ways to detect, predict, and understand suicidality.
RESULTS: Risk assessment misses about half of suicides and yields many false positives. Simple techniques may help detect suicidality more often. The narrative interview appears effective in identifying the forces that might drive someone to attempt suicide.
CONCLUSION: A shift from risk- to action-oriented assessment seems warranted.

An education program for GPs about treating patients with depressive disorders and panic disorders was implemented in one district in the year 1998. A neighboring district was used as a control. Although the educational program was followed by an increase in referrals for panic disorder in the target district, there was no impact on referrals for depressive disorders, the prescribing of antidepressants by the GPs, or the suicide rate.

Utah is among a group of Western Mountain states in which suicide rates among youths are consistently high. The Utah Youth Suicide Study incorporated data from every government agency in Utah, utilizing a statewide Office of the Medical Examiner.
