Sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) are important mercury methylators in sediments, but information on mercury methylators in other compartments is ambiguous. To investigate SRB involvement in methylation in Amazonian periphyton, the relationship between Hg methylation potential and SRB (Desulfobacteraceae, Desulfobulbaceae and Desulfovibrionaceae) abundance in Eichhornia crassipes and Polygonum densiflorum root associated periphyton was examined. Periphyton subsamples of each macrophyte were amended with electron donors (lactate, acetate and propionate) or inhibitors (molybdate) of sulfate reduct

Green sulfur bacteria are obligate photolithoautotrophs that require highly reducing conditions for growth and can utilize only a very limited number of carbon substrates. These bacteria thus inhabit a very narrow ecologic niche. However, several green sulfur bacteria have overcome the limits of immobility by entering into a symbiosis with motile Betaproteobacteria in a type of multicellular association termed phototrophic consortia. One of these consortia, "Chlorochromatium aggregatum," has recently been established as the first culturable model system to elucidate the molecular basis of this

Industrial processes contribute significantly to environmental pollution, particularly by releasing sulfate-rich wastewater containing toxic metals and organic pollutants. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), being anaerobic microorganisms, are capable of reducing sulfate to sulfide, which precipitates harmful heavy metals and facilitates bioremediation. This review explores the potential of SRB in industrial wastewater treatment, focusing on their roles in the bioremediation of sulfates, heavy metals, and persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Laboratory-scale experiments demonstrated that SRB eff

2(S)-dihydroxypropanesulfonate (DHPS) is a microbial degradation product of 6-deoxy-6-sulfo-d-glucopyranose (sulfoquinovose), a component of plant sulfolipid with an estimated annual production of 1010 tons. DHPS is also at millimolar levels in highly abundant marine phytoplankton. Its degradation and sulfur recycling by microbes, thus, play important roles in the biogeochemical sulfur cycle. However, DHPS degradative pathways in the anaerobic biosphere are not well understood. Here, we report the discovery and characterization of two O2-sensitive glycyl radical enzymes that use distinct mecha

Bacterial degradation of organosulfonates plays an important role in sulfur recycling, and has been extensively studied. However, this process in anaerobic bacteria especially gut bacteria is little known despite of its potential significant impact on human health with the production of toxic H2S. Here, we describe the structural and biochemical characterization of an oxygen-sensitive enzyme that catalyzes the radical-mediated C-S bond cleavage of isethionate to form sulfite and acetaldehyde. We demonstrate its involvement in pathways that enables C2 sulfonates to be used as terminal electron

Wastewater from tanneries contains high concentrations of organic matter, chromium, nitrogen, and sulfur compounds. In this study, an artificial wetland is is used as the tertiary treatment in a tannery in León Gto., México. It consists of three subplots with an area of about 450 m2. Two subplots were planted with Typha sp. and the third with Scirpus americanus. Geochemical analyses along the flowpath of the wetland show that contaminants were effectively attenuated. The most probable number technique was used to determine rhizospheric microbial populations involved in the sulfur cycle and sug

Whether of primary or secondary origin, the presence of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in coalbed methane (CBM) is commonly attributed to sulfate reduction facilitated by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). However, the sulfate content in high-sulfur coal is exceptionally low, insufficient to function as a substrate for sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). In this study, an anaerobic digestion experiment was conducted with high-organic-sulfur coal collected from the Late Permian Longtan Formation in Guangxi Province as both the carbon and sulfur sources. The formation mechanism of H2S is revealed from the ev

Sulfonates include diverse natural products and anthropogenic chemicals and are widespread in the environment. Many bacteria can degrade sulfonates and obtain sulfur, carbon, and energy for growth, playing important roles in the biogeochemical sulfur cycle. Cleavage of the inert sulfonate C-S bond involves a variety of enzymes, cofactors, and oxygen-dependent and oxygen-independent catalytic mechanisms. Sulfonate degradation by strictly anaerobic bacteria was recently found to involve C-S bond cleavage through O2-sensitive free radical chemistry, catalyzed by glycyl radical enzymes (GREs). The

Competition between nitrate-reducing bacteria (NRB) and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) for resources in anoxic environments is generally thought to be governed largely by thermodynamics. It is now recognized that intermediates of nitrogen and sulfur cycling (e.g., hydrogen sulfide, nitrite, etc.) can also directly impact NRB and SRB activities in freshwater, wastewater, and sediment and therefore may play important roles in competitive interactions. Here, through comparative transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses, we have uncovered mechanisms of hydrogen sulfide- and cysteine-mediated inhibi

The efficiency of a biofilter to simultaneously remove nitric oxide (NO) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) was investigated under thermophilic (48 ± 2 °C) micro-oxygen (3 vol%) conditions. After the start-up stage (Days 0-14), the stable operation period was divided into three stages. SO2 inlet concentration remained 500 mg/m3, NO inlet concentrations were 300 mg/m3 (Days 15-40), 500 mg/m3 (Days 41-70) and 700 mg/m3 (Days 71-100). In each stable stage, the removal efficiency of NO and SO2 exceeded 90%, the maximum removal rates of NO and SO2 were 98.08% and 99.61%, respectively. The final products of S

Microbial sulfate reduction is largely associated with anaerobic methane oxidation and alkane degradation in sulfate-methane transition zone (SMTZ) of deep-sea cold seeps. How the sulfur cycling is mediated by microbes near SMTZ has not been fully understood. In this study, we detected a shallow SMTZ in three of eight sediment cores sampled from two cold seep areas in the South China Sea. One hundred ten genomes representing sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) and sulfur-reducing bacteria (SRB) strains were identified from three SMTZ-bearing cores. In the layers above SMTZ, SOB were mostly constit

Chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons (CAHs), particularly trichloroethylene (TCE), are pervasive groundwater contaminants with severe environmental risks, necessitating efficient remediation technologies. While the composite system of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) and non-dechlorinating bacteria, such as sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), exhibits synergistic capabilities for remediating TCE, the underlying dynamic processes remain elusive. Specifically, the SRB-driven biogenetic sulfidation of nZVI, along with the subsequent evolution of sulfidation products and their impacts on TCE degradati

Microbial sulfate reduction (SR) by sulfate-reducing micro-organisms (SRM) is a primary environmental mechanism of anaerobic organic matter mineralization, and as such influences carbon and sulfur cycling in many natural and engineered environments. In industrial systems, SR results in the generation of hydrogen sulfide, a toxic, corrosive gas with adverse human health effects and significant economic and environmental consequences. Therefore, there has been considerable interest in developing strategies for mitigating hydrogen sulfide production, and several specific inhibitors of SRM have be

Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in anoxic waters and sediments are the major producers of methylmercury in aquatic systems. Although a considerable amount of work has addressed the environmental factors that control methylmercury formation and the conditions that control bioavailability of inorganic mercury to SRB, little work has been undertaken analyzing the biochemical mechanism of methylmercury production. The acetyl-coenzyme A (CoA) pathway has been implicated as being key to mercury methylation in one SRB strain, Desulfovibrio desulfuricans LS, but this result has not been extended to ot

Alteration in microbial populations and metabolism are key events associated with disruption of intestinal homeostasis and immune tolerance during intestinal inflammation. A substantial imbalance in bacterial populations in the intestine and their relationships with the host have been observed in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), believed to be part of an intricate mechanism of triggering and progression of intestinal inflammation. Because elevated numbers of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) have been found in the intestines of patients with IBD, the study of their interaction wit

To understand the links between the long-term impact of uranium and other metals on microbial community composition, ground- and surface water-influenced soils varying greatly in uranium and metal concentrations were investigated at the former uranium-mining district in Ronneburg, Germany. A soil-based 16S PhyloChip approach revealed 2358 bacterial and 35 archaeal operational taxonomic units (OTU) within diverse phylogenetic groups with higher OTU numbers than at other uranium-contaminated sites, e.g., at Oak Ridge. Iron- and sulfate-reducing bacteria (FeRB and SRB), which have the potential t

Biomining is an increasingly applied biotechnological procedure for processing of ores in the mining industry (biohydrometallurgy). Nowadays the production of copper from low-grade ores is the most important industrial application and a significant part of world copper production already originates from heap or dump/stockpile bioleaching. Conceptual differences exist between the industrial processes of bioleaching and biooxidation. Bioleaching is a conversion of an insoluble valuable metal into a soluble form by means of microorganisms. In biooxidation, on the other hand, gold is predominantly

In this review, we focus on the activities transpiring in the anaerobic segment of the sulfur cycle occurring in the gut environment where hydrogen sulfide is produced. While sulfate-reducing bacteria are considered as the principal agents for hydrogen sulfide production, the enzymatic desulfhydration of cysteine by heterotrophic bacteria also contributes to production of hydrogen sulfide. For sulfate-reducing bacteria respiration, molecular hydrogen and lactate are suitable as electron donors while sulfate functions as the terminal electron acceptor. Dietary components provide fiber and macro

In humans, methionine derived from dietary proteins is necessary for cellular homeostasis and regeneration of sulfur containing pathways, which produce inorganic sulfur species (ISS) along with essential organic sulfur compounds (OSC). In recent years, inorganic sulfur species have gained attention as key players in the crosstalk of human health and the gut microbiome. Endogenously, ISS includes hydrogen sulfide (H2S), sulfite (SO32-), thiosulfate (S2O32-), and sulfate (SO42-), which are produced by enzymes in the transsulfuration and sulfur oxidation pathways. Additionally, sulfate-reducing b

Soda lakes represent a unique ecosystem with extremely high pH (up to 11) and salinity (up to saturation) due to the presence of high concentrations of sodium carbonate in brines. Despite these double extreme conditions, most of the lakes are highly productive and contain a fully functional microbial system. The microbial sulfur cycle is among the most active in soda lakes. One of the explanations for that is high-energy efficiency of dissimilatory conversions of inorganic sulfur compounds, both oxidative and reductive, sufficient to cope with costly life at double extreme conditions. The oxid
