The Reconstructive Burden of E-Scooter Injuries: Risk Factors, Injury Patterns, and Surgical Implications From a Plastic Surgery Series.

INTRODUCTION: Electric scooter (e-scooter) use is popular, and there is an increase in related injuries. Our aim was to characterize facial injury patterns, surgical management, and modifiable risk factors. METHODS: A retrospective case series was conducted, reviewing all e-scooter-related injury presentations between 2017 and 2025. Patients with life-threatening injuries were excluded. Data collected included demographics, details regarding the e-scooter use and accident, injury pattern, treatment modality, and hospitalization. RESULTS: A total of 105 patients were included, who were predom

Beyond single-use: a systematic review of environmental, economic, and clinical impacts of endoscopic surgical instrumentation.

BACKGROUND: The evolution of endoscopic surgery has introduced a multitude of instruments, available in both disposable and reusable variants, influencing practices across various surgical specialties. Instrument selection is complex, considering individual preferences and institutional factors such as costs, instrument performance, and factors related to cleaning and sterilization. Notably, environmental sustainability has gained prominence due to the threat of climate change. This review assessed the existing literature to facilitate evidence-informed decision-making, encompassing clinical a

Current issues in reprocessing of medical and surgical instruments.

By the very nature of reusability, processing for reusable medical devices has been and continues to be risk prone. Healthcare systems have historically been slow to embed best practice quality control elements into everyday reprocessing workflow. The identification of weak points and an openness to change are necessary to allow for a proactive culture of safety. Infection preventionists can play key roles in establishing and maintaining related quality control and oversight.

Steam sterilisation of disposable surgical gowns does not compromise resistance to wet microbial penetration.

BACKGROUND: Reuse of disposable medical products is common practice in veterinary medicine; however, studies on the safety of such reuse are often lacking. This study aimed to determine whether steam sterilisation of disposable surgical gowns compromises their resistance to wet microbial penetration. METHODS: Twenty surgical gowns were removed from their sterile packaging, manipulated, wetted, dried and subsequently repacked and steam sterilised. The protocol was performed once (groups A and C) or twice (groups B and D) for both spunbond/meltblown/meltblown/meltblown/spunbond (SMMMS) (groups

Use of an adherent fenestrated drape to anchor an adjacent vertical sterile surgical towel.

Vertical surgical sites or those on reclining patients often present a challenge when establishing and securing a sterile field. The drape or towel most proximal to the physician is often vertically oriented. The forces of gravity and movements of surgery can shift or detach this vertical drape. Sterile clamps are not always available or are needed for securing other instruments. We present a method to secure this vulnerable drape using a central fenestrated adherent drape.

The liposuction apparatus "suspension device": hi-plane liposculpture.

BACKGROUND: The improvement of liposuction equipment and techniques has resulted in a cumbersome operating room array of aspirator hoses, irrigation/infiltration tubing, and the insulated command and control wiring of current ultrasonic or power liposuction devices. This situation is further complicated by the presence of a second surgeon, the concomitant use of additional traditional or ultrasonic cannulas, and the suction hose of a second aspirator. OBJECTIVE: To solve the problems of sterility and operating room organization, the authors describe a simple, releasable suspension design. ME

How we do it: blood contamination during management of epistaxis--awareness, utilization and availability of barrier protection.

There is a significant risk of blood contamination during the non-surgical management of epistaxis. Contamination beyond gloves happens in 55% of cases and the contamination risk to eyes as high as 18%. There is a lack of awareness and a majority of ENT doctors underestimate this risk. Protective barrier equipment and eye protection in particular are suboptimally available in all clinical areas where epistaxis is dealt with. Consequently, there is poor utilization of protective barrier equipment.

Cutaneous Mycobacterium Abscessus Infection Following Plastic Surgery: Three Case Reports.

AIM: Mycobacterium abscessus is ubiquitous in the environment and seldom causes infections in immunocompetent individuals. However, skin and soft tissue infections caused by M. abscessus have been reported in recent years. Additionally, the cutaneous infections or outbreaks post cosmetic surgery caused by M. abscessus have been increasing due to the popularity of plastic surgery. The main modes of transmission are through contaminated saline, disinfectants, or surgery equipment, as well as close contact between patients. This article describes three patients who were admitted to our hospital b

Head-mounted video monitor for global visual access in mini-invasive surgery. An initial report.

Video-assisted technology for minimally invasive surgery uses the coaxial approach (working field between surgeon and video monitor). Complex procedures and two-team approaches disrupt this relationship causing paradoxic motion. In an effort to obviate these issues, a head-mounted monitor display has been used by the surgeon in 74 of these complex operative procedures. The head-mounted display (HMD) eliminates the negative effects of yaw, roll, and pitch - each of which is detrimental to the performance of complex operative procedures. There has been no visual strain or ocular fatigue observed

Zero-Delay Mechanical Thrombectomy for Distal Large Vessel Occlusion Detected on Intraoperative Angiogram After Microsurgical Clipping of a Posterior Communicating Artery Aneurysm: Value of Hybrid Operating Room.

BACKGROUND: The hybrid operating room (OR) offers new opportunities for the management of complex cerebrovascular lesions to the dual-trained neurovascular surgeon. It creates a space for easy accessibility to perform complex endovascular procedures by delivering high-quality images with readily available surgical equipment. CASE DESCRIPTION: Here, we demonstrate how the hybrid OR allowed for rapid identification and near zero-delay distal mechanical thrombectomy of a middle cerebral artery occlusion with favorable outcome after clipping of a complex posterior communicating artery aneurysm.

Safety in the operating room during orthopedic trauma surgery-incidence of adverse events related to technical equipment and logistics.

BACKGROUND: Safety in the operating room is widely debated. Adverse events during surgery are potentially dangerous for the patient and staff. The incidence of adverse events during orthopedic trauma surgery is unknown. Therefore, we performed a study to quantify the incidence of these adverse events. Primary objective was to determine the incidence of adverse events related to technical equipment and logistics. The secondary objective was to evaluate the consequences of these adverse events. METHODS: We completed a cross-sectional observational study to assess the incidence, consequences and
