MAMAS (mastopexy-augmentation made applicable and safer): A standardized template of pre-operative marking and step-by-step surgical procedure.

Simultaneous breast augmentation with mastopexy is growing in popularity. It is a complex procedure that can lead to post-operative complications, patient dissatisfaction, and increased risk of litigation. The aim of this study is to describe an approach for the inverted-T augmentation-mastopexy technique, which limits intraoperative modifications, minimizes errors, and decreases post-operative complications and patient dissatisfaction. The study included 107 patients with Regnault's grade I and II ptosis and severe pseudoptosis. All patients were marked according to our novel technique, Masto

Radiation exposure and associated risks to operating-room personnel during use of fluoroscopic guidance for selected orthopaedic surgical procedures.

Because of the increased use of fluoroscopic guidance techniques in certain orthopaedic surgical procedures, surgeons and other operating-room personnel who are involved in these procedures are voicing growing concern over possible associated radiation health hazards. Using thin-layer lithium fluoride chips for thermoluminescence dosimetry, we directly measured the radiation exposure encountered by the primary surgeon during seven operative procedures that were done utilizing fluoroscopic guidance techniques. Dosimetry studies were also carried out using a tissue-equivalent phantom model to de

Impact of surgical timing and type of operative procedure on outcomes in periprosthetic hip fractures: an observational study at an NHS trust centre in the UK.

PURPOSE: There is a global trend of increased periprosthetic fractures due to the growing number of arthroplasty procedures. The present study assessed the impact of factors such as time to surgery and type of surgery on the outcomes, which have been seldom evaluated for periprosthetic fractures. METHODS: An observational study was conducted on consecutive 87 patients within an NHS district hospital trust in the UK. Patients who underwent a complete hip replacement prior to the fracture, received fixation therapy, or underwent revision surgery within the specified time were screened. Patients

How Much Will My Child's Operation Cost? Availability of Consumer Prices From US Hospitals for a Common Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgical Procedure.

BACKGROUND: Price transparency allows patients to make value-based health care decisions and is particularly important for individuals who are uninsured or enrolled in high-deductible health care plans. The availability of consumer prices for children undergoing orthopaedic surgery has not been previously investigated. We aimed to determine the availability of price estimates from hospitals in the United States for an archetypal pediatric orthopaedic surgical procedure (closed reduction and percutaneous pinning of a distal radius fracture) and identify variations in price estimates across hosp

Surgical technique of double switch procedure: Senning with arterial switch operation for congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries with ventricular septal defect.

We present a case of 12-month-old boy with congenitally corrected transposition of great arteries with L-looped ventricles and L-transposition of great arteries and ventricular septal defect. When admitted to the hospital, the patient had the appearance of congestive heart failure due to moderate to severe tricuspid valve regurgitation and right ventricle dysfunction. The pulmonary artery (PA) banding was required first because of low systolic pressure in the morphological left ventricle less than 70% confirmed by catheterization. Three months later, the patient appeared to be a good candidate

Surgical consideration of replacement of the ascending aorta and aortic valve with a composite valve graft--operative and long-term results of Bentall and DeBono procedure.

Our experience with the Bentall and DeBono procedure is reviewed. Between April, 1977 and April, 1985, seventeen patients underwent repair of annulo-aortic ectasia (9 cases), and dissecting aneurysm with aortic regurgitation (8 cases). Three patients had cardiac tamponade due to rupture of dissecting aneurysm. In regard to this procedure, we recently performed the continuous suture method on the prosthetic valve ring, coronary ostia, and distal anastomosis sites. In this study, there was one early death due to a sudden rupture of the dissecting aneurysm of the left thoracic cavity on the 10th

What is the safety of nonemergent operative procedures performed at night? A study of 10,426 operations at an academic tertiary care hospital using the American College of Surgeons national surgical quality program improvement database.

BACKGROUND: Ever-increasing numbers of in-house acute care surgeons and competition for operating room time during normal daytime business hours have led to an increased frequency of nonemergent general and vascular surgery procedures occurring at night when there are fewer residents, consultants, nurses, and support staff available for assistance. This investigation tests the hypothesis that patients undergoing such procedures after hours are at increased risk for postoperative morbidity and mortality. METHODS: Clinical data for 10,426 operative procedures performed over a 5-year period at a

Role of operating room air pressure variability on development of surgical-site infections in surgical procedures classified as colon and abdominal hysterectomy by the National Healthcare Safety Network: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between colon and hysterectomy surgical-site infections (SSIs) and air pressure variability inside operating rooms (ORs) during procedures is understudied. METHODS: Our retrospective cohort study featured patients who underwent procedures assigned National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) colon or abdominal hysterectomy codes. The primary exposure was percentage of procedure time out of pressure range. NHSN criteria were used to identify SSIs. We used multi-variable binary logistic regression modelling to analyse the association between the exposure and SSIs. Sens
