INTRODUCTION: Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) lung resections are complex procedures with a critical role played by endoscopic staplers in the transection of vessels, bronchi, and lung tissue. Stapling devices for end-to-end anastomoses (EEA) have facilitated more rapid and reliable reestablishment of esophagogastric continuity following esophageal resections. Despite their ease of use, various intraoperative problems can arise, especially with the esophageal pursestring or the insertion of the anvil into the fragile, commonly contracted lumen. This paper describes various technical details that are useful adjuncts to allow creation of rapid, consistently successful EEA stapled esophagogastric anastomoses. These techniques are of particular value in the resident teaching setting.

Automatic skin staplers have been commonly used for surgical wound closure for many years. The efficiency and ease of placement of skin staplers make them an attractive alternative to suture repair of selected lacerations in the emergency department. BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic mini-gastric bypass (MGB) is a bariatric procedure which is gaining popularity worldwide. The original Rutledge technique is known to have good outcomes, but this and other surgical procedures that involve the use of staplers are very expensive for use in low-income countries.
