INTRODUCTION: A stoma is an artificial anastomosis of the gastrointestinal tract to the abdominal skin wall to reroute the stream of feces. Fecal diversion, bowel decompression, and anastomosis protection are common indications for stomas. Relative to other surgical operations, stomas have a high morbidity rate, with rates averaging 40% and ranging 14-79%. The most common early complication was peristomal skin irritation. In contrast, parastomal hernias were the most common late complication.
METHODS: This research was performed at King Hamad University Hospital (KHUH) in the Kingdom of Bahra

The best placement of the stoma is one of the important issues in colostomy. We developed a new laparoscopic technique for colostomy. In the technique, because the port for the laparoscope was placed in the right side of the abdomen, it was easy to separate the descending colon from lateral peritoneum and to lift up the colon loop to the stoma site. In our experiences using this technique, patients had no serious complications. This technique enables the performance of safe, secure, and effective temporary colostomies.

OBJECTIVE: Assessemnet of anastomotic leak rates following recto-sigmoid resection in advanced ovarian cancer surgery after implementing a restrictive stoma policy. Secondary objectives include identifying predictive factors for stoma creation, analyzing anastomotic leak management, and perioperative outcomes.
SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Recto-sigmoid resection is essential in advanced ovarian cancer treatment but carries risks like anastomotic dehiscence. The role of protective stomas remains uncertain, highlighting the need for targeted strategies.
METHODS: This retrospective study includes d

BACKGROUND: Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) occurs in about 1% to 5% of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Peristomal pyoderma gangrenosum (PPG) is particularly difficult to manage.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective chart review was performed on all patients with IBD in whom PPG developed from 1997 to 2007 at the Milton S Hershey Medical Center.
RESULTS: Sixteen patients (11 women) were identified. Seven had Crohn's disease (CD), seven had ulcerative colitis (UC), and two had indeterminate colitis. Six patients underwent total proctocolectomy, six patients had total abdominal colectomy (T

Permanent stoma is an important method often selected in the surgical treatment of colorectal cancer, mainly including but not limited to the sigmoid colon single-lumen stoma after abdominoperineal resection. Since the stoma needs to be retained permanently, preoperative intervention for the stoma, the stoma surgical procedure, prevention and treatment of complications, and long-term postoperative follow-up are all closely related to the patient's quality of life. Under the guidance of the Colorectal Surgery Group of the Society of Surgery, Chinese Medical Association, the Colorectal Tumor Pro

PURPOSE: We report our early experiences with laparoscopic intestinal stomas, describing the indications, the surgical techniques, and the complications of this new procedure.
METHODS: The medical records of the 17 patients who had successfully undergone laparoscopic intestinal diversion at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center were reviewed.
RESULTS: The mean follow-up of this group has been 24.3 (range, 3-61) weeks. Seven patients had their stomas created as part of a laparoscopic abdominoperineal resection, six patients underwent palliative laparoscopic colostomy for an obs

INTRODUCTION: Stoma could be a surgically created opening within the abdominal wall. The main purpose of the stoma is to divert the excreta off from the distal intestinal loops to relieve an obstruction or protect anastomosis. The indications for stoma creation are intestinal obstruction due to benign or malignant tumors, perforation peritonitis, inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal malignancies, and anorectal malformations.
AIM OF THE STUDY: The study aimed to identify the patterns, indications, and complications that occur following the creation of enteric stomas.
MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Stoma formation is a common paediatric surgical procedure and yet, there is no low-cost stoma model for technical skills training. We describe a low-cost low-fidelity simulator for stoma formation made from simple easily available materials using porcine bowel and skin. The model was introduced at a regional training day for paediatric surgical registrars. All the trainees rated it as excellent and life-like. We describe an inexpensive stoma model for simulation-based training in technical skills especially in low-middle-income countries (LMICs) due to the cost benefit.

The paper presents the results of clinical trials and meta-analyses regarding the closing time of: ileostomy (protective) after primary colorectal resection with anastomosis and colostomy - after Hartman's surgery. Rectal cancer surgery and ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) in inflammatory bowel diseases often involves an ileostomy (temporary protective, preventive), which in a significant proportion of cases is eliminated at different times from the initial surgery. There is a discussion in the literature regarding the selection of the appropriate time of stoma closure, taking into account

OBJECTIVE: This is an observational study to explore possible changes in end-ileostomy stoma protrusion through years of modified surgical methods.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with permanent end-ileostomy were eligible for inclusion. Patients were recruited from two outpatient clinics in South-East Norway and from the Norwegian society for patients with ostomy (NORILCO). Stoma protrusion was measured in upright and supine positions by study nurse (outpatient cohort) or by the patient (NORILCO cohort). Clinical information was obtained through patients' questionnaire replies. For analyses,

The clinical outcome of anastomotic leakage in colorectal and coloanal anastomoses necessitates a loop stoma for fecal diversion. Controversy remains of the most suitable position of the stoma. In this respect a loop ileostomy or loop colostomy can be performed. The aim of this study was to determine the advantages and disadvantages of both surgical strategies from the literature and to derive possible recommendations. Both methods provide a good operative outcome with low complication rates. Overall there is a trend towards ileostomy because of lower complication rates after stoma creation an

BACKGROUND: The most frequently occurring adverse events in individuals with a transfemoral amputation treated with a bone-anchored prosthesis are soft tissue infections and stoma-related complications. These soft tissue complications are believed to be influenced by surgical technique and implant design, but little is known about the effect of changes to treatment on these events.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What is the result of surgical technique and implant modifications on the incidence of soft tissue infections and stoma-related complications in transfemoral bone-anchored prosthesis users,

PURPOSE: Fournier's gangrene (FG) is a rare potentially lethal necrotising infection of the perineum. While the gold standard management is early and aggressive surgical debridement, the evidence in the literature is unclear as to the role and outcomes of diversional stoma.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted to identify studies investigating the relationship between stoma formation and FG. Meta-analyses were performed using a random-effects model.
RESULTS: Twenty-seven studies (n=1482) were included. There was no significant difference in disease severity scores between the stoma and

BACKGROUND: Anastomotic leak is a serious complication of resection for low rectal carcinoma.
METHODS: Data from a prospective multicentre study conducted between January 2000 and December 2001 were analysed to determine the early outcome after low anterior resection in patients with and without a protective stoma. The morbidity and mortality rates associated with ileostomy and colostomy closure were compared.
RESULTS: Eight hundred and eighty-one (32.3 per cent) of 2729 patients received a protective stoma after low anterior resection. Overall anastomotic leak rates were similar in patients

A cancer diagnosis is an emotionally and physically overwhelming experience. For patients with stomas, this journey is further complicated by unique challenges that demand specialist care and attention. The presence of a stoma introduces additional layers of complexity, making the role of a specialist stoma nurse indispensable. Their expertise not only helps in preventing severe complications but also ensures timely management of issues, empowering patients to navigate their treatment with confidence and dignity. This article explores common side-effects of systemic anti-cancer therapy and how
