Neuromuscular function in polio survivors.

Although there is no documented, objective evidence that symptomatic post-polio subjects are rapidly losing strength, they have a number of neuromuscular deficits related to a more severe poliomyelitis illness that may explain why they complain of problems with strength, endurance, and local muscle fatigue. Symptomatic post-polio subjects were hospitalized longer during the acute poliomyelitis, recovered more slowly, and had electromyographic evidence of greater loss of anterior horn cells. Additionally, recent assessment demonstrated that they were weaker, had a reduced work capacity, and rec

Sleep disturbances in torture survivors.

One of the main complaints in torture survivors is sleep disturbance with nightmares, too little sleep and daytime fatigue. Seven subjects, who had been exposed to torture from 6 months to seven years previously, were examined by polysomnography. All had abnormal sleep patterns compared with normal age- and sex-matched controls. The subjects woke frequently from REM sleep, had reduced REM sleep duration, absent Stage 4 sleep, short total sleep time and low sleep efficiency. This study revealed that previously healthy young persons subjected to extreme stress may develop an abnormal sleep patte

Who are happy survivors? Physical, psychosocial, and spiritual factors associated with happiness of breast cancer survivors during the transition from cancer patient to survivor.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate physical, psychosocial, and spiritual factors associated with happiness in breast cancer survivors during the reentry period. METHODS: It is a cross-sectional study with 283 nonmetastatic breast cancer survivors who completed treatment within 1 year. We included survivors who completed questionnaires on happiness and health-related quality of life (QoL) 2 years after cancer diagnosis. Happiness and QoL was measured using the Subjective Happiness Scale and EORTC QLQ-C30, respectively. Multivariable logistic regression was used to find factors associated w

Adverse respiratory outcomes among head and neck cancer survivors in the Utah Cancer Survivors Study.

BACKGROUND: The number of head and neck cancer (HNC) survivors has been increasing because of improving survival in the United States. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of respiratory disease diagnoses in HNC survivors in comparison with cancer-free individuals. A second aim was to investigate risk factors for respiratory disease among HNC survivors. METHODS: Patients with HNC diagnosed from 1996 to 2012 were identified in the Utah Cancer Registry (n = 1901). Up to 5 cancer-free individuals from the general population (n = 7796) were matched to each HNC survivor by birth yea

Financial hardship in adolescent and young adult cancer survivors and adult survivors of childhood cancers.

PURPOSE: Adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors and adult survivors of childhood cancer (CCSs) represent growing populations facing unique survivorship challenges. Among these, financial hardship has emerged as a critical late effect, with profound implications for quality of life and health equity. METHODS: This narrative review synthesizes literature published between January 2020 and April 2025 on financial hardship in AYA cancer survivors and CCSs. Studies were identified through PubMed, Medline (Ovid), and Scopus and we compared the prevalence, determinants, and consequences o

CPR-related injuries after non-traumatic out-of-hospital cardiac arrest: Survivors versus non-survivors.

AIM: There have been no direct comparisons of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)-related injuries between those who die during CPR and those who survive to intensive care unit (ICU) admission. This study aimed to compare the incidence, severity, and impact on survival rate of these injuries and potential influencing factors. METHOD: This retrospective multicenter study analyzed autopsy reports of patients who experienced out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) and were not admitted to hospital. CPR-related injuries were compared to OHCA patients with clinical suspicion of CPR-related injury co

Frailty and Sleep in Adult Survivors of Childhood Cancer: A Childhood Cancer Survivor Study Report.

BACKGROUND: Young adult survivors of childhood cancer exhibit rates of frailty similar to adults several decades older without a cancer history. Frailty has been associated with sleep disturbances in non-cancer populations, but the relationship has not been examined in childhood cancer survivors who are known to exhibit elevated rates of sleep problems. AIMS: Examine associations between frailty and poor sleep quality in long-term survivors of childhood cancer. METHODS: This study utilized data from 9044 participants (> 5 years from diagnosis, Mage = 40.8 years [SD = 9.5]) in the Childhood C

The development of a brain injury survivor patient and public involvement group by a brain injury survivor.

BACKGROUND: Patient and public involvement (PPI) in research is seen as key to ensuring applicability and impact. Undertaking PPI in people after brain injury has long been seen to be a challenge. In 2020 The NIHR Brain Injury MedTech Cooperative developed a programme with the aim of improving PPI involvement, impact and diversity in this population. METHODS: Through a process of iterative development, a PPI programme was created. It built on an existing underutilised database of people after brain injury and their carers who were interested in engaging with PPI and utilised video-calling sof

Health Outcomes in Childhood Cancer Survivors with Congenital Anomalies in the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study.

BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies are associated with an increased risk of childhood cancer. However, there is a knowledge gap about health outcomes for childhood cancer survivors with congenital anomalies. METHODS: We included childhood cancer survivors from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (n = 22,247), comparing survivors with and without self-reported anomalies. Using Cox regression, we estimated HR and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of chronic health conditions (CHC) classified per the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events from 1 (mild) to 5 (fatal) and subsequent malignant neo

Exploring peer loss and survivor guilt among young adult survivors of childhood cancer.

BACKGROUND: There are nearly 500,000 childhood cancer survivors in the United States, and emerging evidence suggests at least 25% of these survivors have lost a peer to cancer. The current study investigated the nature of peer loss in a sample of young adult survivors of childhood cancer. METHODS: Survivors (n = 63) completed an online survey including measures of peer loss, survivor guilt (Interpersonal Guilt Questionnaire) and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS; Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist for DSM-5). Relations between peer loss, survivor guilt, and PTSS were assessed. RESULTS

Sexual assault referral centers for survivors of rape in Finland - A review of their development and support for survivors.

In Finland, multidisciplinary sexual assault referral centers (SARCs) primarily serve victims of rape within one month of the incident. The services are offered at no cost and are available to individuals aged 16 and over, irrespective of sex or gender, and regardless of whether they decide to report the assault to the authorities. Services consist of medical and forensic examinations, trauma support and counselling. Follow-up and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases and potential pregnancy are included. Specialized services and standardized examination and follow-up protocols have incre

Osteonecrosis in adult survivors of childhood cancer: a report from the childhood cancer survivor study.

PURPOSE: Osteonecrosis (ON) is a potentially serious complication of therapy in survivors of childhood cancer. Our goals were to describe the incidence of ON and identify patient and treatment characteristics associated with elevated risk. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The rate of self-reported ON was determined for 9,261 patients enrolled onto the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study, a cohort of 5-year survivors of childhood cancer diagnosed from 1970 to 1986, and compared with the rate in a random sample of 2,872 siblings of survivors. Survivors with positive responses were reinterviewed to confirm the

Secondary sarcomas in childhood cancer survivors: a report from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood cancer survivors are at increased risk for the development of secondary sarcomas. Exposure to radiation therapy is a known risk factor for the development of these sarcomas. Other risk factors for secondary sarcomas have not been well described for childhood cancer survivors. We analyzed a large cohort of childhood cancer survivors to determine the true incidence of secondary sarcomas and to examine factors associated with the risk of developing secondary sarcomas. METHODS: The history of secondary sarcomas in 14,372 participants in the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study wa

Emotional distress and satisfaction in life among Holocaust survivors--a community study of survivors and controls.

Results are reported from a large population study (of working people) comparing Holocaust survivors and a control group in regard to emotional distress, satisfaction in life and psychosomatic symptoms. It was found that, even 40 years after the traumatic experience, this group of survivors exhibited a slightly higher degree of emotional disorders than controls who were not under Nazi occupation during WWII. These long-term effects were usually more prominent in women than in men, and the relationship to age was minimal.

Neurocognitive outcomes in adult survivors of neuroblastoma: A report from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study.

BACKGROUND: Despite survival improvements, there is a paucity of data on neurocognitive outcomes in neuroblastoma survivors. This study addresses this literature gap. METHODS: Neurocognitive impairments in survivors were compared to sibling controls from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (CCSS) using the CCSS Neurocognitive Questionnaire. Impaired emotional regulation, organization, task efficiency, and memory defined as scores ≥90th percentile of sibling norms. Modified Poisson regression models evaluated associations with treatment exposures, era of diagnosis, and chronic conditions. Anal

Survivors' Experiences of Sexual Assault by Intimate Partners: A Qualitative Study of Survivors and their Informal Supports.

UNLABELLED: Sexual assault occurring in the context of intimate partner violence (IPV) relationships has received much less attention in the literature on sexual assault. Studies of both survivors and their informal support network members are also lacking in both sexual assault and IPV literatures. PURPOSE: The current study's purpose was to examine sexual assault survivors' experiences where intimate partner violence was mentioned as part of their narratives. METHOD: Survivors and their informal support providers (SP; e.g., family, friends, romantic partners) were interviewed separately ab

Understanding the early support needs of survivors of traumatic events: The example of severe injury survivors.

OBJECTIVE: In the aftermath of a potentially traumatic event, people may experience a range of mental health outcomes, including subclinical symptoms and distress. There is growing evidence that trauma survivors with subclinical symptoms are at increased risk of developing later psychiatric disorders, and this is especially the case with severe injury survivors. There is a need to develop evidence-based, early, brief interventions for those who are at risk of developing trauma-related psychopathology. To date, interventions for this at-risk group have largely been derived from expert consensus
