Beyond remission: The unspoken reality of cancer survivorship.

Cancer remission is often perceived as the end of the illness journey. However, for many survivors, particularly those who have experienced advanced disease, remission marks the beginning of a complex and often under-recognized phase of life. This perspective article explores the physical, psychological, and emotional challenges that persist beyond treatment, including scanxiety, fear of recurrence, and difficulties in adapting to a "new normal." It also highlights the gap in post-treatment care and the lack of structured support for survivors navigating this transition. By bringing attention

Survivorship Challenges and Supportive Care in Lung Cancer.

The number of lung cancer survivors-anyone living with and beyond a lung cancer diagnosis-is increasing along with advances in screening, early detection, and treatment. Following diagnosis and treatment, however, many lung cancer survivors experience high symptom burden and functional challenges that culminate in poor health-related quality of life (HRQL). We incorporated the cancer life course endorsed by the United States National Academy of Medicine (formerly Institute of Medicine) and reviewed interventions to improve HRQL, starting from the time of diagnosis, during or following curative

Survivorship preparedness and activation among survivors of lymphoma.

OBJECTIVES: Taking an active role in managing post-treatment care has emerged as a key aspect of promoting a successful transition into survivorship and is associated with better patient outcomes. In this study, we focus on two key aspects of active self-management, activation and preparedness. Activation was defined as understanding one's role in the care process and having the knowledge, skill, and confidence to take on a role in managing self-care. Preparedness was defined as the extent to which individuals perceived they had sufficient information about what to expect after cancer treatmen

Cardiovascular health: an important component of cancer survivorship.

Advances in the detection and treatment of cancer have translated into improved cancer survival rates and a growing population of cancer survivors. These include those living with cancer and individuals free of the disease following treatment. Epidemiological studies demonstrate that cancer survivors are at an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), with cardiovascular (CV) mortality overtaking cancer mortality in some tumour types. Cancer and CVD share common aetiological risk factors, for example, age, tobacco use and obesity, as well as a shared inflammatory pathogenesis. The CV ris

Survivorship of the Hip Joint After Acetabulum Fracture.

PURPOSE: The purposes of this study were to determine the rate of failure of the hip joint after acetabulum fracture and to identify risk factors. METHODS: Acetabulum fractures treated over 17 years at a level-1 trauma center were reviewed. Patient, injury, and treatment factors were assessed regarding possible association with failure of the hip joint: end-stage arthrosis and/or total hip arthroplasty (THA). RESULTS: Seventy percent were treated with primary open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). Seventy-two (12.5%) of 575 fractures underwent THA; 64 were after initial ORIF. The mean

The importance of immunization in cancer prevention, treatment, and survivorship.

Answer questions and earn CME/CNE A measles outbreak originating in California during 2014 and 2015 called attention to the potential for infectious disease outbreaks related to underimmunized populations in the United States and the potential risk to pediatric patients with cancer attending school when such outbreaks occur. Compliance with vaccine recommendations is important for the prevention of hepatitis B-related and human papillomavirus-related cancers and for protecting immunocompromised patients with cancer, and these points are often overlooked, resulting in the continued occurrence o

The Tao survivorship of schistosomes: implications for schistosomiasis control.

Schistosomiasis, caused by blood flukes of the genus Schistosoma, is a major public health problem which contributes substantially to the economic and financial burdens of many nations in the developing world. An array of survival strategies, such as the unique structure of the tegument which acts as a major host-parasite interface, immune modulation mechanisms, gene regulation, and apoptosis and self-renewal have been adopted by schistosome parasites over the course of long-term evolution with their mammalian definitive hosts. Recent generation of complete schistosome genomes together with nu

The evolution of breast cancer navigation and survivorship care.

Over the last several decades, breast screening, diagnosis, and treatment have evolved. With that evolutionary process, so have the complexities of oncology care, especially from the perspective of more fragmented care occurring. The majority of breast care is outpatient based. The need for patient navigation has heightened as this fragmentation and financial issues set before the oncologist and the patient continue to occur and in many situations increase. Without effective navigation, breast patients can fall through the cracks and not get diagnosed as early as possible, or not receive all a

Cancer survivorship and psychological distress in later life.

Recent research in psychosocial oncology has pointed to the traumatic nature of the stress experienced by cancer survivors. Most of this research has focused on children, young adults survivors and their families. This investigation proposes a conceptual model for understanding general psychological distress (anxiety, hostility and depression) and symptoms of posttraumatic stress (hyper-arousal, avoidance and intrusiveness) that may be associated with cancer survivorship among older adults. Findings from a survey of 180 older adult, long-term cancer survivors are used to illustrate the key fea

Recent Innovations in Primary Care Cancer Survivorship Roles.

BACKGROUND: Despite 2 decades of cancer survivorship research, policy, and advocacy, primary care in the United States has not fully integrated survivorship care into its generalist role. This manuscript describes innovative roles primary care physicians have adopted in survivorship care and how these roles emerged. METHODS: We conducted qualitative in-depth interviews with a snowball sample of 10 US primary care physician innovators in survivorship care. Interviews were recorded and professionally transcribed. Our team met weekly as interviews were completed to review transcripts and write s

Advancing Uterine Cancer Survivorship Among African American Women.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined health behavior interventions for African American women who are uterine cancer survivors. Black-white differences in uterine cancer survival suggest that there are unmet needs among these survivors. METHODS: This article identifies opportunities to address disparities in uterine corpus cancer survival and quality of life, and thereby to increase uterine cancer survivorship among African American women. RESULTS: For cancer survivors, common side effects, lasting for long periods after cancer treatment, include fatigue, loss of strength, lymphedema, and d

Congenital radius deficiency: radiographic outcome and survivorship analysis.

The experience with congenital radius deficiency, or radial hemimelia, at the Shriners' Hospital for Children, Los Angeles Unit, was reviewed. A cohort of 29 limbs in 23 patients was identified with an average follow-up period of 50 months. Radiographic parameters were assessed using the hand-forearm angle, hand-forearm position, and ulnar bow. We compared radialization to modified centralization, assessed the efficacy of ulnar osteotomy, and assessed the effect of age, preoperative deformity, ulnar osteotomy, and Bayne's type on the final result. Revisions were noted and a survivorship analys

Lifestyle and Behavioral Factors and Cancer Survivorship in Women.

A growing number of women in the United States are cancer survivors. Behavioral and lifestyle factors are important components of health during and after cancer treatment and are modifiable with sustained behavior change. In this review, we summarize published evidence on the associations of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine's 6 lifestyle pillars-nutrition, physical activity, stress management, avoidance of risky substances, restorative sleep, and social connection-with survival and cancer recurrence among female cancer survivors and on the effects of interventions to modify each pill

Diet and Breast Cancer Survivorship: A Scoping Review.

Survival rates of breast cancer, which is the most common cancer among women, continue to improve. Diet after diagnosis has become an area of interest regarding breast cancer survival, and evidence has accumulated over past decades. Although earlier studies did not offer recommendations beyond general cancer prevention guidelines, more recent findings suggest a potential role of dietary factors in breast cancer prognosis. Healthy dietary patterns have been associated with reduced mortality from non-breast cancer causes. However, associations with breast cancer-specific mortality were less cons
