Experimental Infection of Domestic Piglets (Sus scrofa) with Rift Valley Fever Virus.

Rift Valley fever phlebovirus (RVFV) is a mosquito-transmitted phlebovirus (Family: Phenuiviridae, Order: Bunyavirales) causing severe neonatal mortality and abortion primarily in domestic ruminants. The susceptibility of young domestic swine to RVFV and this species' role in geographic expansion and establishment of viral endemicity is unclear. Six commercially bred Landrace-cross piglets were inoculated subcutaneously with 105 plaque-forming units of RVFV ZH501 strain and two piglets received a sham inoculum. All animals were monitored for clinical signs, viremia, viral shedding, and antibod

Leptospira fainei Detected in Testicles and Epididymis of Wild Boar (Sus scrofa).

Leptospirosis is a re-emerging and worldwide diffused zoonosis. Recently, the high importance of their epidemiology was explained by the intermediate Leptospira strains. Among these strains, Leptospira fainei was the first intermediate strain detected in domestic and wild swine. Wild boars (Sus scrofa) are well known as a reservoir, as well as all swine, for pathogenic Leptospira, but very little information is available concerning intermediate Leptospira infection. The investigation aim was to evaluate if intermediate Leptospira can infect the reproductive systems of wild boars hunted in the

Parasitic Infections of Wild Boars (Sus scrofa) in Iran: A Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Swine species are an important source of meat production worldwide, except in Islamic countries where pig breeding and pork consumption are forbidden. Hence, they are often neglected in these regions. A considerable number of wild boars (Sus scrofa) inhabit Iranian territories, particularly in dense forests of north, west and southwest of the country, but our knowledge regarding their parasites is very limited. OBJECTIVE: The lack of a comprehensive record in this connection encouraged us to review the whole works of literature in the country. METHODS: The current review presents

Toxoplasma gondii seroprevalence in extensively farmed wild boars (Sus scrofa) in Denmark.

Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic parasite of worldwide importance. In this study, we estimated T. gondii seroprevalence in extensively farmed wild boars in Denmark, where little is known about T. gondii in animal hosts. Our study focused on wild boars because they are considered good indicator species for the presence of T. gondii, and wild boar meat is used for human consumption. Serum samples from 101 wild boars collected in 2016-2018 from five different locations from the continental part of Denmark, Jutland, were screened for anti-T. gondii antibodies. The samples were analysed using a comm

Body wall defects and amniotic band syndrome in pig (Sus scrofa domesticus).

The amniotic band syndrome is a congenital condition. It is characterized by the presence of fibrous amniotic bands that may entangle or entrap different foetal parts in utero, resulting in deformation, malformation or disruption. We report on a female piglet presenting amniotic band adherences in the right abdominal flank, several body wall defects (gastroschisis, abdominoschisis with omphalocele), severe scoliosis, anomalous umbilical cord with single umbilical artery, anal atresia, anomalous liver and absent gall bladder, hypoplastic genitalia, ankylosis and arthrogryposis in pelvic limbs,

Parasitic Helminths in Wild Boars (Sus scrofa) in Mazandaran Province, Northern Iran.

BACKGROUND: Wild boars (Sus scrofa) are distributed worldwide and found in many parts of Iran. Although S. scrofa is reservoirs for many parasites, there is little data on helminthic prevalence in them. We aimed to survey the status of helminthic infections in S. scrofa in the Mazandaran Province of northern Iran. METHODS: Twenty-one wild boars were captured and examined for helminth infection during Dec 2012-Mar 2014. Adult worms such as Macracanthorhynchus hirudinaceus were identified by helminth size and shape, and the arrangement of the proboscis hooks. The sedimentation and flotation tec

Mycobacterium tuberculosis Infection in a Domesticated Korean Wild Boar ( Sus scrofa coreanus).

Tuberculosis, a chronic progressive disease, has been reported in bovine, swine, and primate species. Here, we report the first case of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in a Korean wild boar ( Sus scrofa coreanus). The owners this domesticated boar brought it to the Gyeongbuk Veterinary Service Laboratory in Korea after it was found dead and severely emaciated. Demarcated yellowish white nodules were found around the larynx and retropharyngeal lymph node during necropsy. The lungs had diffuse fibrinous pleuritis, severe congestion, and scattered nodules. More nodules were found in the sple

Sparganosis in wild boar (Sus scrofa) - Implications for veterinarians, hunters, and consumers.

From February to March 2016 we found plerocercoids of Spirometra sp. in four wild boar hunted in Białowieża Primeval Forest, north-eastern Poland. Plerocercoids were located subcutaneously and in muscle tissue. A sequence of a nuclear 18S rRNA gene was used for genetic specification of the samples. The analyzed gene fragment showed 100% identity with the Spirometra erinacei sequence. Thus, the emerge of human sparganosis due to consumption of undercooked or smoked wild boar meat is likely in the areas where wild boar is an approved food source, especially in the absence of routine guidelines f

Intermediate veins in swine (Sus scrofa domestica) kidney: authors' own anatomical classification.

BACKGROUND: The use of domestic swine as an experimental animal is increasing steadily. Swine organs are the best animal model for urological experiments. The aim of the study was to evaluate the course and size of intermediate veins in a swine kidney. The research results were compared with the results obtained from studies on venous vascularisation of human kidneys. The knowledge of the above-mentioned vessels is important both in human and veterinary medicine and will enable researchers to compare and notice differences between human and swine organs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was c

First reports of Trichinella pseudospiralis in wild boars (Sus scrofa) of Italy.

Trichinella pseudospiralis is a non-encapsulated species infecting both mammals and birds. In Italy, this parasite was reported only in two night-birds of prey of Central Italy. In January 2010, Trichinella larvae were detected in three wild boars (Sus scrofa) of two regions of Northern Italy by enzymatic digestion. The parasites were identified as T. pseudospiralis by multiplex-PCR. The first infected wild boar was hunted in the Emilia Romagna region and the other two infected wild boars were bred outdoors in a small family farm of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. These new epidemiological d

A spatiotemporal transcriptomic atlas of porcine (Sus scrofa) female early gonadal development.

The early gonads of mammals contain primordial germ cells (PGCs) and gonadal somatic cells. In females, the gonadal somatic cells promote the specification of PGCs into oogonia and their entry into meiosis, which is crucial for oogenesis. Although single-cell transcriptome sequencing technology holds significant advantages in cell type identification, its inability to resolve spatial positional information substantially hampers research on communication mechanisms between germ cells and adjacent somatic cells. Here, we utilized high-resolution spatial transcriptomic technology to dissect the s

Histology, histochemistry and ultrastructure of cornea of domestic pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus).

A comprehensive light and ultrastructural examination of the cornea in Domestic Pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus) revealed four distinct layers: the anterior epithelium, corneal stroma, Descemet's membrane and endothelium. Although Bowman's layer was not distinctly identified through histology, histochemical analysis indicated the presence of a rudimentary Bowman's layer, possibly vestigial from evolution. Scanning electron microscopy of the outer corneal surface unveiled two cell types, characterized by micro-projections, with light cells exhibiting shorter, thicker projections compared to dark ce

Epidemiology of Aujeszky disease in wild boars (Sus scrofa L.) in Croatia.

Aujeszky disease (AD) or pseudorabies is a viral disease of domestic and wild animals caused by the Suid alphaherpesvirus 1. In wild boar infection usually undergo latent phase but under certain conditions reactivation of the virus can result in a disease. Seroprevalence in wild boars ranges from 0.8 to 100%, and is among other influenced by region, type of management, age and sex of the studied animals. In this study we analyzed blood, lungs, olfactory bulbs and spleen from 222 free-living wild boars from different localities in Croatia and compared results obtained by ELISA with PCR, sex, ag

Chlamydia suis and tetracycline resistance genes un Italian wild boar (Sus scrofa).

The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of Chlamydia suis and tetracycline resistance determinants in conjunctival swabs of Italian wild boars, by PCR. Extracted DNA collected from 50 wild boars from Northern and Central Italy was examined by molecular methods. One sample (2%) from the Central Italy was positive for C. suis. Fragments of tetR(C) and tetR(C)-tet(C) resistance determinants were amplified from the same sample. Further molecular investigations suggested the attribution of these tetracycline resistance determinants to C. suis, such as the truncation oftetR(C) and ab

Massive Taenia hydatigena Cysticercosis in a Wild Boar (Sus scrofa) from Italy.

PURPOSE: Taenia hydatigena cysticercosis, due to Cysticercus tenuicollis, is a parasitic disease infecting domestic and wild animals worldwide causing economic and productive losses. Nonetheless, little attention has been paid to the role of the wild ungulates in the epidemiology of this disease. In the last years, the increasing population of wild boars in Europe has raised the attention of researchers on their role in the spreading of several infections, including those caused by cestodes. Herein, we report the description of a massive infection due to T. hydatigena cysticercosis in a wild b

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in wild boars (Sus scrofa) from Central Italy.

Wild and farmed game meat consumption has been highlighted as an emerging risk factor for Toxoplasma gondii infection in humans. In Central Italy wild boar is widely distributed and is also one of the most popular game species. The main goal of the present study was to estimate the seroprevalence of T. gondii antibodies through a serological survey conducted on 400 hunted wild boars (250 males and 150 females) during three subsequent hunting seasons (2009-2011), using an Immunofluorescence Antibody Assay. The animals were sorted by age, determined on the evaluation of the dental table; 101 wer
