[Swallowing the psyche].

Various swallowing disorders have been viewed to be psychogenic and an altered contractile activity of the oesophagus has been reported to occur during emotional stress. Non-propulsive activity and "cardiospasm" were suggested to represent a symbolic revulsion, referring to deep, unconscious conflict or an ambivalent attitude towards incorporation (Kronfeld, 1934; Weiss, 1944; Alexander, 1950). However, these concepts were not corroborated by subsequent research. "Globus hystericus" was shown to result from webs and folds in the hypopharynx or from gastrooesophageal reflux, whilst the term "ca

Profiling Number of Swallows per Bolus and Residue in Individuals With Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

PURPOSE: Swallowing efficiency impairments are the most prevalent and earliest manifestation of dysphagia in people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (pALS). We aimed to profile number of swallows elicited in pALS across thin liquid, moderately thick liquid, extremely thick liquid, and crackers compared to expected healthy reference data and to determine relationships between degree of pharyngeal residue, number of elicited swallows, and swallowing safety. METHOD: pALS underwent standardized videofluoroscopic swallowing studies of 10 bolus trials. Trained raters performed duplicate, independ

Effect of peripherally and cortically evoked swallows on jaw reflex responses in anesthetized rabbits.

This study aimed to investigate whether the jaw-opening (JOR) and jaw-closing reflexes (JCR) are modulated during not only peripherally, but also centrally, evoked swallowing. Experiments were carried out on 24 adult male Japanese white rabbits. JORs were evoked by trigeminal stimulation at 1 Hz for 30 s. In the middle 10 s, either the superior laryngeal nerve (SLN) or cortical swallowing area (Cx) was simultaneously stimulated to evoke swallowing. The peak-to-peak JOR amplitude was reduced during the middle and late 10-s periods (i.e., during and after SLN or Cx stimulation), and the reductio

Effect of supraglottic and super-supraglottic swallows on tongue pressure production against hard palate.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the state of tongue pressure production during supraglottic swallow (SS) and super-supraglottic swallow (SSS) performed by healthy adults, and to investigate the effects of these swallowing maneuvers on the oral stage of swallowing. The participants were 19 healthy individuals. Tongue pressure against the hard palate during swallowing was measured using a tongue pressure sensor sheet system with five pressure-sensitive points. The tasks comprised swallowing 5 mL of water by normal wet swallow, SS, and SSS, and the parameters for analysis were the d

Experimental infection of cliff swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) with varying doses of West Nile virus.

Cliff swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) were inoculated with differing doses of West Nile virus (WNV) to evaluate their potential role as reservoir hosts in nature. Swallows often nest in large colonies in habitats and months associated with high mosquito abundance and early WNV transmission in North America. Additionally, cliff swallow diet consists of insects, including mosquitoes, leading to an additional potential route of WNV infection. The average peak viremia titer among infected cliff swallows was 10(6.3) plaque-forming units (PFU)/mL serum and the reservoir competence index was 0.34

Effortful Swallow Maneuver and Modifications on Swallow Dynamics in Healthy Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Effortful swallow (ES) is a widely used technique in dysphagia management, believed to strengthen oropharyngeal muscles and enhance swallowing safety and efficiency. Although its impact on the oral phase of swallowing is well documented, its effects on pharyngeal swallowing physiology remain inconsistent. This study aimed to elucidate the effects of ES on swallowing kinematics and timing, addressing existing inconsistencies in the literature. METHODS: This study involved 22 healthy adults using archived videofluoroscopic swallowing studies. Participants performed three swallow t

The videoendoscopic swallowing study: an alternative and partner to the videofluoroscopic swallowing study.

A new, physical examination-based videoendoscopic method of evaluation can enhance considerably the understanding and efficiency of clinicians working with patients with swallowing difficulties. Using the fiberoptic nasolaryngoscope, evaluation of structure and function of palate, pharynx, and larynx, along with sensation of the laryngopharynx, is carried out. Next, patients' swallowing capabilities are assessed as they ingest various food consistencies. This method, formerly called videoendoscopic evaluation of dysphagia (VEED), but perhaps more appropriately termed videoendoscopic swallowing

Evaluation of swallowing ability using swallowing sounds in maxillectomy patients.

Maxillectomy for oral tumours often results in debilitating oral hypofunction, which markedly decreases quality of life. Dysphagia, in particular, is one of the most serious problems following maxillectomy. This study used swallowing sounds as a simple evaluation method to evaluate swallowing ability in maxillectomy patients with and without their obturator prosthesis placed. Twenty-seven maxillectomy patients (15 men, 12 women; mean age 66.0 ± 12.1 years) and 30 healthy controls (14 men, 16 women; mean age 44.9 ± 21.3 years) were recruited for this study. Participants were asked to swallow 4

Alterations to Swallowing Physiology as the Result of Effortful Swallowing in Healthy Seniors.

A significant proportion of healthy seniors report difficulty swallowing, thought to result from age-related decline in muscle bulk/function. Effortful Swallowing (ES) is used both as a compensatory maneuver to improve pharyngeal propulsion/clearance and has been proposed as an exercise to improve pharyngeal strength. This study sought to quantify the immediate kinematic, temporal, and functional changes during an ES maneuver to quantify its exercise potential to combat age-related changes in swallowing. Videofluoroscopy data were collected from 44 healthy seniors (21 male) over 65 years old (

LVC Timing in Infant Pig Swallowing and the Effect of Safe Swallowing.

Recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury in neonates, a complication of head and neck surgeries, leads to increased aspiration risk and swallowing dysfunction. The severity of resulting sequelae range from morbidity, such as aspiration pneumonia, to mortality from infection and failure to thrive. The timing of airway protective events including laryngeal vestibule closure (LVC) is implicated in aspiration. We unilaterally transected the RLN in an infant pig model to observe changes in the timing of swallowing kinematics with lesion and aspiration. We recorded swallows using high-speed video-fluo

Utility of Barium Swallows in Patients Who Have Had a Recent Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to understand the clinical indications and utility of a barium swallow study in patients who have already been investigated with an upper gastrointestinal (UGI) endoscopy. It would be useful to determine the additional diagnostic information provided by a barium swallow study given endoscopy is considered the gold standard for examining the UGI tract. METHODS: This retrospective study examined all barium swallow studies performed at a single tertiary hospital and identified patients who had been investigated with an UGI endoscopy in the preceding 6

Age-Related Differences in Pressures Generated During Isometric Presses and Swallows by Healthy Adults.

The aim of this prospective observational study was to determine the associations among age, maximum lingual isometric pressures, and maximum swallow pressures in specific regions of the tongue. Individuals 21 years and older who reported normal swallowing were enrolled. Seventy-one healthy adults were stratified by age into young (21-40 years), middle (41-60), and old (61-82) groups. Maximum pressures were measured for each individual during isometric tongue press tasks as well as saliva, 5, and 10 mL thin liquid bolus swallows at 5 sensors located on the hard palate: front, middle, left, rig

Antioxidants, radiation and mutation as revealed by sperm abnormality in barn swallows from Chernobyl.

Reduced levels of antioxidants such as carotenoids and vitamins A and E can increase DNA damage caused by free radicals. Exposure to radiation has been proposed to reduce levels of antioxidants that are used for DNA repair and this reduction may be responsible for increased levels of mutation in radioactively contaminated areas. We test this hypothesis using field measures of antioxidants in blood, liver and eggs of the barn swallow Hirundo rustica while relating these to levels of mutation as reflected by the frequency of abnormal sperm. Antioxidant levels in blood, liver and eggs were reduce

The Natural Swallow: Factors Affecting Subject Choice of Bolus Volume and Pharyngeal Swallow Parameters in a Self-selected Swallow.

Predetermined volumes are used extensively throughout clinical assessment of swallowing physiology, but bolus volumes selected by an individual in their natural swallow can vary greatly from those used in structured assessment. This study aims to identify factors influencing self-selected volume and how the mechanics of self-selected volume swallows differ from predetermined volume swallows. We used pharyngeal high-resolution manometry (HRM) with simultaneous videofluoroscopy to measure swallowing pressures in the velopharynx, hypopharynx, and upper esophageal sphincter (UES). Data were collec

Flight energetics of barn swallows across speeds: high aerodynamic efficiency, but low energy conversion efficiency.

Bird flight conversion efficiency (η) determines the amount of metabolic power (Pmet) transformed into mechanical power (Pmech) to remain aloft, and it is central to understanding animal flight energetics, yet it remains difficult to quantify. Using 13C-labelled sodium bicarbonate (NaBi) and particle image velocimetry (PIV), we measured Pmet and Pmech, respectively, in un-instrumented barn swallows (Hirundo rustica) flying across 7.8 to 13.6 m s-1 in a wind tunnel. Both Pmet and Pmech showed the expected U-shaped relationship with airspeed. Whole-animal η showed a shallow peak at 7% at 11 m s-
