Autochthonous Case of Pulmonary Histoplasmosis, Switzerland.

In Europe, pulmonary histoplasmosis is rarely diagnosed except in travelers. We report a probable autochthonous case of severe chronic pulmonary histoplasmosis in an immunocompetent man in Switzerland without travel history outside of Europe. Diagnosis was achieved by histopathology, fungal culture, and serology, but the source of the infection remains speculative.

Maternal mortality in Switzerland 1995-2004.

OBJECTIVES: The analysis of maternal mortality is an important instrument for quality assurance in Obstetrics and should be accomplished periodically. This study analysed cases of maternal mortality between 1995 and 2004. METHODS: The Federal Statistical Office (BFS) provided all death certificates between 1995 and 2004 with an ICD-10 code in the obstetric field (indicated by the letter O). Additionally, all maternal mortality cases from the archive of the Institute of Legal Medicine (IRM), in Zurich, were investigated. All clinics with a maternal mortality case were asked to fill out a detai

Porphyria in Switzerland, 15 years experience.

BACKGROUND: The porphyrias, a group of seven metabolic disorders in the haem biosynthesis, can be classified into acute and non-acute porphyrias. A common symptom of acute porphyrias is severe acute abdominal pain, whereas cutaneous photosensitivity can occur in both acute and non-acute porphyrias. All porphyrias, except for sporadic porphyria cutanea tarda (sPCT), are hereditary disorders caused by mutations in the respective genes. We present porphyria cases documented in our porphyria centre during the past 15 years. METHODS: Diagnosis was based on clinical symptoms and biochemical analyse

[Maternal mortality in Switzerland 1985-1994].

The maternal mortality rate in the west has dropped drastically in the last 100 years. As yet there are no detailed numbers of the actual causes of death for Switzerland. We re-evaluated the anonymous patient documentation for the years 1985-1994 using the officially registered (ICD-8) cases of maternal mortality. 45 deaths out of 812,825 births remained from the original 76 registered cases, which corresponds to a direct maternal mortality of 5.4/100,000 live births. The other cases had to be reclassified (indirect, late or pregnancy-related obstetric deaths). The majority of the deaths were

Cancer mortality in Switzerland, 1990-1994.

Data and statistics are presented on cancer death certification in Switzerland in 1990-1994, updating previous publications covering the period 1951-1989. Data for 1990-1994, grouped into 30 categories, are presented in 10 tables as 5-years age- and sex-specific absolute and percentage frequencies of deaths, and average annual crude, age-specific and age-standardized rates, at all ages and truncated for the 35-64 years age group. Male-to-female ratios of mortality rates, and ranks of the ten most frequent cancer sites have also been tabulated, and all-ages and truncated age-standardized rates

Food intolerances in children and adolescents in Switzerland.

Adverse food reactions have become an important health concern in pediatrics. There are discrepancies between diagnosed and self-reported food allergies and intolerances, leading to food avoidance with possible psychological and nutritional implications in the latter. There is no data available so far on the number of children and adolescents, who reduce or completely avoid certain foods in their diet. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of children and adolescents in the Northwest of Switzerland, who omit foods from their diet because of a self-reported intolerance, as well

[Congenital Toxoplasmosis and CMV in Switzerland in 2019].

Epidemiological trends in congenital toxoplasmosis and CMV are extremely divergent. While there were only 39 cases of congenital toxoplasmosis in Switzerland between 1982 and 2015, there was an equivalent number of cases of congenital CMV, 38 in total, in 2017 alone. Serological screening for toxoplasmosis was logically abandoned in Switzerland in 2008. Regarding CMV, there is no recommendation for serological screening or neonatal screening in Switzerland, whereas early diagnosis can improve prognosis through the rapid initiation of antiviral treatment. The epidemiological data generated by s

Occurrence of Chlamydiaceae in Raptors and Crows in Switzerland.

Bacteria of the family Chlamydiaceae are globally disseminated and able to infect many bird species. So far, 11 species of Chlamydia have been detected in wild birds, and several studies found chlamydial strains classified as genetically intermediate between Chlamydia (C.) psittaci and C.abortus. Recently, a group of these intermediate strains was shown to form a separate species, i.e., C.buteonis. In the present study, 1128 samples from 341 raptors of 16 bird species and 253 corvids representing six species were examined using a stepwise diagnostic approach. Chlamydiaceae DNA was detected in

[The significance of cryptosporidiosis for the health of calves in Switzerland].

Diarrhea in calves is one of the most important cattle diseases in Switzerland. The diagnosis and treatment of calf diarrhea represent a major challenge. Single-celled Cryptosporidium parasites are the most prevalent causative agents of calf diarrhea besides rotavirus in the first weeks of life, and are responsible for about 50% of diarrheal cases. Cryptosporidium parvum has been described as a cause of diarrhea in one to three weeks old calves since the 1970s. Oral ingestion of persistent environmental oocysts results in severe diarrhea lasting four to six days and shedding of large numbers o

Haemodynamic instability of uncommon aetiology in Switzerland.

In Switzerland, vitamin C deficiency is a rare condition. Nonetheless, in clinical practice, there are some patients exhibiting a vitamin C deficiency as a result of an unbalanced diet or intestinal malabsorption. We report the clinical history of a 55-year-old man known for alcoholism and insufficient intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. He was admitted to the intensive care unit, for haemodynamic instability caused by blood loss due to fragile vessels (skin, gastrointestinal). Further analyses revealed a severe lack of vitamin C. The patient received a high dose of intravenous substitutive

Hepatitis delta in Switzerland: a silent epidemic.

OBJECTIVES: The sero-prevalence of co-infection with the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and the hepatitis D virus (HDV) is well known in many European countries, starting from 6.8% in Germany to more than 27% in some Turkish areas. To gain a better description of this infection in Switzerland, and to characterise those affected, a questionnaire was sent to all Swiss gastroenterologists, hepatologists and infectologists. METHODS: A questionnaire was received by 349 physicians which asked them to report on all HBV- and HDV-infected patients seen at their units/offices. RESULTS: A total of 101 HDV-pos

Thyroid cancer in Vaud, Switzerland: an update.

We reviewed the descriptive epidemiology of thyroid cancer using data from the Cancer Registry of the Canton of Vaud, Switzerland, a consistently well-surveilled population with relatively high rates of the disease, between 1974 and 1998, on the basis of a total of 596 registered cases. Overall thyroid cancer incidence tended to increase moderately in both genders over the 25-year period considered, to reach rates of 5.4 and 2.0 per 100,000 (world standard) in females and males, respectively. There were also changes in histologic classification, with some increases in papillary neoplasms and c

Preservation of products with MCI/MI in Switzerland.

Preservation of products with the combination of 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolinone (methylchloroisothiazolinone, MCI) and 2-methyl-4-isothiazolinone (methylisothiazolinone, MI), commercialized as Kathon CG or WT, is widely used. Allergic contact dermatitis reactions to the preservative have been described in many publications of epidemiological studies. In addition, a number of allergic, airborne reactions to MCI/MI were observed in recent years. The aim of the presented study was: (i) to compare epidemiological data of MCI/MI with data of other preservatives; (ii) to estimate the possible e
