Pigmented villonodular synovitis commonly occurs in synovial joints of the appendicular skeleton, but rarely affects the synovial joints of the spine. It has both neoplastic and benign features, and the etiology is thought to be posttraumatic. The case of a young man presenting with paraparesis and a large thoracic lesion is reported.

A rare case is described of giant swelling of the soft tissue around the knee joint. A large popliteal cyst was present, the fleshy walls of which penetrated the muscle layers of the calf. The place of arthrography in diagnosis is stressed. The yellow-brown mass was confirmed histologically to be pigmented villonodular synovitis. The mechanism of formation of a popliteal cyst is discussed. The differential diagnosis and treatment are reviewed briefly: our preference is for radical surgery.

Tenosynovial giant cell tumors (TGCTs) are a spectrum of benign growths that can occur in both intra-articular and extra-articular locations. The pattern of involvement also varies from nodular, typically small-volume disease to extensive and diffuse synovial infiltration. Surgical resection remains the treatment of choice for most patients and resection techniques include arthroscopic, open, or a combined approach. However, TGCT can be locally aggressive and exhibit high recurrence rates even after adequate surgical removal. Improved understanding of the complex genetic and environmental fact

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a non-neoplastic proliferative process that involves synovial tissue in the joints, tendon sheaths and bursae. It usually occurs in young adults, aged 20-50 years, is characteristically monoarticular and of slow progression. Clinical symptoms are nonspecific, and joint stiffness and pain are common in long-term cases. Shoulder PVNS is known to be extremely rare, especially when affecting the subacromial bursal region without joint involvement. Magnetic resonance is the imaging modality of choice in PVNS and is useful for diagnosis, surgical planning a

Pigmented villonodular synovitis is a benign but locally aggressive extra-articular tumor arising from the synovial membrane of tendons and bursae occurring near a joint space. Rarely, pigmented villonodular synovitis can involve the temporomandibular joint, which is emphasized in this paper. Diffuse and localized types have been described in the literature. The diffuse type involves the entire synovial membrane and infiltrates adjacent structures, which tend to be more aggressive and associated with a higher rate of recurrence when compared with the localized type.

OBJECTIVE: Pigmented villonodular synovitis occurring in the region of the temporomandibular joint is a rare disease, requiring a review of the treatment method, follow-up period.
METHOD: Refer to the past literature, along with a retrospective search.
RESULTS: An excision, including the skull base bone, was performed in all cases; however, recurrence was found in one case on which fractional excision was performed. Past reports have also indicated that en bloc resection was considered desirable.
CONCLUSION: It is necessary to perform en bloc resection on patients with pigmented villonodula

Pigmented villonodular synovitis is a benign proliferative tumor of the synovium. It is very rare, and most cases occur in the knee joint. In this article, we report a case of localized pigmented villonodular synovitis in the knee joint of a 14-year-old boy. This condition is rare in the knees of the children. We preferred to remove the tumor with arthrotomy instead of arthroscopy for two reasons: (i) the patient was obese, (ii) we thought that recurrence risk was high after arthrotomy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Giant cell tumor of tendon sheath and pigmented villonodular synovitis are synovial-based diseases that are generally treated by surgery. For aggressive and recurrent tumors, treatment alternatives are needed. This review explores a targeted therapeutic strategy.
RECENT FINDINGS: Imatinib, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, blocks expression of colony stimulating factor 1 (CSF1) by a small subpopulation of tumor cells that recruit CSF1-bearing nonneoplastic cells. Limited clinical data support the efficacy and side effect profile of imatinib in stabilizing disease in most patient

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS), a rare hyperproliferation of the synovial lining, commonly mimics other conditions. As a result, the diagnosis may remain elusive, as the classic signs of tenderness and effusion are not specific. Occasionally, PVNS presents as a popliteal cyst, which may divert attention from intra-articular pathology. In this article, we describe a case of PVNS that presented with a popliteal cyst as the chief problem report. In other cases PVNS presented as a popliteal cyst, and evidence was reported of PVNS within the cyst stalk and presumable intra-articular involv

Pigmented villonodular synovitis is an uncommon proliferative disease of the synovium, which is usually monoarticular, presenting as chronic monoarthritis of the knee. To our knowledge, the case under discussion is only the second report in the English language medical literature of isolated involvement of the proximal tibiofibular joint.

We studied two patients with paravertebral localized pigmented villonodular synovitis. This anatomic location has not, to our knowledge, been previously described as a site for lesions of this type. In one case, a cervical paravertebral lesion first appeared clinically as a hypopharyngeal mass. The other lesion was noticed incidentally by a roentgenogram and had eroded bone in the lumbosacral area of the spine. We believed both lesions to have arisen from synovial membranes of the accessory joints of the vertebral column.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a rare diagnosis in pediatric patients and commonly presents with symptoms of swelling and pain. Early diagnosis is important to prevent secondary degeneration into the subchondral bone. This review will analyze the etiology, clinical signs/symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and recent literature on PVNS in the pediatric population.
RECENT FINDINGS: Many theories of PVNS etiology have been described in the literature; however, an inflammatory response has been most widely accepted. PVNS can occur in any joint, but most commonly in the

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS), sometimes also called tenosynovial giant cell tumor, is a rare, slow-growing, benign soft-tissue disorder. PVNS most commonly affects the knee and is associated with painful hemarthrosis and joint swelling. The condition also can affect the hip, ankle, shoulder, or elbow. This article reviews practice guidelines for PVNS, diagnosis, and surgical and nonsurgical treatments.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a rare hyperplasia disease of the synovium with a predilection for the knee in either a localized (LPVNS) or a diffuse form (DPVNS). But the exact cause is not clear. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between the expression of cellular inhibitor of apoptosis 2 (cIAP2) and proliferation, apoptosis, invasive growth and postoperative recurrence in PVNS. Clinical significance of cIAP2 expression in synovium from 63 patients' knee joints with PVNS (40 DPVNS; 23 LPVNS) were investigated with 20 normal subjects acting as controls. The cIA

Pigmented villonodular synovitis is a rare, disabling disease that usually presents in young adults. Here, the authors present a unique case of pigmented villonodular synovitis in a 60-year-old female diagnosed 20 years after the initial presentation. The patient presented with a complaint of knee pain consistent with osteoarthritis. Radiological investigations, including magnetic resonance imaging, only showed degenerative changes and were inconclusive to diagnose pigmented villonodular synovitis. Intraoperative macroscopic features of the synovium suggested pigmented villonodular synovitis,

Paediatric joint pain and swelling is a frequent presentation. The clinical profile and relevant laboratory investigations often lead to the correct diagnosis; however some patients present a diagnostic conundrum. Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a rare entity that may afflict children and be easily missed.

: A 17-yr-old, female, captive-born reticulated giraffe ( Giraffa camelopardalis ) presented with acute-onset lameness of the right metacarpophalangeal (fetlock) joint. Despite multiple courses of treatment, the lameness and swelling progressively worsened over a 3.5-yr period, and the giraffe was euthanized. At necropsy, gross and microscopic changes in the right, front fetlock and associated flexor tendon sheath included villous synovial hyperplasia and the formation of discrete pigmented nodules within synovial membranes. Histologically, the nodules were composed of abundant, fibrous connec

At present, the treatment strategies in patients with localized and diffuse forms of pigmented villonodular synovitis have more or less been standardized. However, these strategies are not optimal because high recurrence rates persist and studies with a sufficient level of evidence are lacking. This systematic review article describes all known treatment options for intra-articular pigmented villonodular synovitis and their clinical results. Based on this research, we provide guidelines to support physicians in making the optimal treatment decisions. Given the rarity of the disease, randomized
