First Suspected Case of Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease in Syria.

Prion diseases are rare, fatal neurodegenerative disorders caused by misfolded proteins. Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (sCJD) is the most common form and develops without any identifiable triggers. This case report documents the first probable diagnosis of sCJD in Syria, involving a 72-year-old woman who presented with depressive symptoms for several months before rapidly deteriorating, and eventually succumbing to complications of the disease. Clinical examination findings, exclusion of CJD-mimicking conditions, and specific MRI findings, supported the diagnosis in the absence of biochem

Knowledge, awareness, and attitude of physical therapists on Alzheimer's disease in Syria.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a growing global health concern, yet physical therapists’ (PTs) knowledge and attitudes toward AD in Syria remain understudied. This study assessed these factors to identify gaps and inform interventions. A cross-sectional study of 279 Syrian PTs used validated scales (ADKS, DAS). Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze knowledge, attitudes, and associated factors. PTs showed moderate knowledge (72.6% accuracy in AD-assessment/diagnosis and 59.5% in AD caregiving) but significant gaps (55.9% incorrectly linked tremors to AD). Attitudes toward AD

Stopping a polio outbreak in the midst of war: Lessons from Syria.

BACKGROUND: Outbreaks of circulating vaccine-derived polioviruses (cVDPVs) pose a threat to the eventual eradication of all polioviruses. In 2017, an outbreak of cVDPV type 2 (cVDPV2) occurred in the midst of a war in Syria. We describe vaccination-based risk factors for and the successful response to the outbreak. METHODS: We performed a descriptive analysis of cVDPV2 cases and key indicators of poliovirus surveillance and vaccination activities during 2016-2018. In the absence of reliable subnational coverage data, we used the caregiver-reported vaccination status of children with non-polio

Visceral and Cutaneous Leishmaniases in a City in Syria and the Effects of the Syrian Conflict.

War provides ideal grounds for the outbreak of infectious diseases, and the Syrian war is not an exception to this rule. Following the civil crisis, Syria and refugee camps of neighboring countries witnessed an outbreak of leishmaniasis. We accessed the database of the central leishmaniasis registry in Latakia city and obtained the leishmaniasis data of the period 2008-2016. Our data showed that the years 2013 and 2014 recorded a surge in the number of both cutaneous leishmaniases (CL) and visceral leishmaniasis (VL) cases. This surge coincided with the massive internal displacement waves that

Changing pattern and outcome of pediatric chest injuries in urban Syria.

Background Pediatric chest injuries were infrequent in our practice, but the outbreak of the Syrian crisis resulted in an increase in number and a change in the pattern of thoracic trauma incidents. We compared our experience of pediatric chest injuries before and during the crisis. Methods We reviewed the records of 256 children aged 12.8 ± 5 years who were admitted to our hospital with the diagnosis of chest trauma over a 12-year period. Collected data included mechanism of injury, associated injuries, method of management, length of hospital stay, complications, and mortality. Results The i

Cutaneous Leishmaniasis: The Truth about the 'Flesh-Eating Disease' in Syria.

Recent news headlines claimed that corpses thrown into Syrian streets are causing cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) outbreaks. However, leishmaniasis is only transmitted by blood-feeding sandflies, not through human remains. High CL prevalence in Syria may instead be attributed to the absence of disease control programs due to the disruption of health services.

Monkeypox awareness and public health challenges in conflict affected syria 2024.

Monkeypox (MPOX) is a zoonotic viral disease that has re-emerged and spread to non-endemic regions, drawing global attention. Understanding the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of vulnerable populations, particularly in conflict-affected areas, is crucial for effective public health responses. This community-based cross-sectional study evaluates the KAP of the general Syrian population regarding MPOX, focusing on areas affected by conflict. The study was conducted between October 25 and November 22, 2024, using a culturally adapted and validated structured online and paper-based quest

Rapidly progressive tumor stage mycosis fungoides: A case report from Syria.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Mycosis Fungoides, the most common type of cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCLs), has typically an indolent course over years or decades. Patches grow into infiltrated plaques which may turn eventually into tumors. The tumor stage represents advanced lymphoma, but this occurs in a minority (∼10%) of cases. CASE PRESENTATION: we present a rare case of mycosis fungoides in a 30-year-old woman showing rapid progression to tumor stage, unlike the indolent clinical course seen classically. CLINICAL DISCUSSION: Mycosis Fungoides (MF) is the most common primary cutaneous T

Early separation of omphalopagus conjoined twins: a case report from Syria.

Omphalopagus twins are one of many forms of conjoined twins sharing part of the gastrointestinal system and abdominal wall. This type of twins has the best chance of survival if successfully separated. Surgical approaches in these cases are generally preferably elective, but sometimes separation may be urgently needed due to life-threatening complications, such as hemodynamic instability, death of either twin, necrotizing enterocolitis, among many others. We report a case of successfully separated omphalopagus twins at day two of life.

Serological and molecular detection of Toxoplasma gondii in chickens in southern Syria.

Toxoplasma gondii is a foodborne protozoan parasite that infects all warm-blooded animals and humans worldwide. Poultry become infected with T. gondii oocysts by ground feeding, and humans contract toxoplasmosis by the consumption of raw or undercooked infected meat. In Syria, no research has been documented regarding T. gondii infection in chickens; therefore, this study was carried out to determine the infection rate in chickens using serological and molecular assays. A total of 59 birds (50 females and 9 males) including free range (FR) and caged chickens were purchased from the southern go

[Eruption times of permanent teeth in children and adolescents in Latakia (Syria)].

The eruption times of permanent teeth and the sequence of tooth eruption were investigated in 1000 individuals aged 5 to 13 years (female: 469, male: 531). Wisdom teeth were excluded from the evaluation. All individuals were inhabitants of Latakia (Syria). The results were compared to dentition studies originating from neighbour countries and Germany, published in recent years. The teeth emerged symmetrically in each jaw. However, teeth erupted earlier in the mandible than in the maxilla, excluding the slightly earlier eruption of maxillary premolars and first molars. The sequence of emerging
