Conceptualizing the Impacts of Racism on Racialized Midwives in Ontario: An Alert to the Profession.

INTRODUCTION: There is a research gap on how racism impacts the mental health of midwives in Ontario. Our aim was to conceptualize the impact of racism on racialized midwives in Ontario. METHODS: Informed by constructivist grounded theory, we analyzed data contributed by racialized midwives in Ontario who participated in focus groups and interviews as part of a larger study about mental health. Participants had practiced midwifery within the past 15 months. RESULTS: Seven participants from 2 focus groups and one individual interview were included. Our conceptualization, Hypervigilance: Being

Racism and violence in policing: Perspectives from a juvenile prison.

Following recent events involving racism and violence in policing, the current study sought to understand factors associated with support for related social movements and worries about personal, family, and peer safety. Data were from 78 currently incarcerated young people (M = 16.5 years; 31% Black) and 20 juvenile prison staff (M = 40.3 years; 72% Black) via online surveys. A comparable proportion of young people (47.3%) and staff (47.4%) reported participating in the Black Lives Matter movement. Among young people, prior experiences with police were significantly associated with support for

Structural Racism in Healthcare: Nurses' Ethical and Professional Responsibility to Lead Structural Reform.

BACKGROUND: Structural racism remains a pervasive and deeply embedded determinant of healthcare inequity globally. Despite strengthened professional standards and policy commitments to equity, racialised populations continue to experience substantial disparities in healthcare access, quality, safety and outcomes. These inequities are sustained not only through interpersonal encounters but also through structural conditions embedded within healthcare systems, workforce arrangements, governance processes and organisational cultures. Structural racism additionally affects nurses' wellbeing, workf

How Racism and Discrimination Impacts Black Young Women's Sexual Health: The Influence of Racial and Sexual Stereotypes on Educational Access.

PURPOSE: Structural racism and racial discrimination may increase adverse sexual health outcomes in Black adolescent girls. However, the influence of racism on sexual health has not been well-described in qualitative studies. The purpose of this study was to explore definitions of structural racism and determine how experiences of racial discrimination impact sexual health and decision-making in a sample of adolescent Black girls. METHODS: Black girls aged 13-19 years were recruited from an ongoing longitudinal study. Virtual focus groups and individual interviews were facilitated, inquiring

The role of racial discrimination in medical care: A secondary analysis of the effect of culturally tailored, internet-delivered CBT for insomnia in Black women.

OBJECTIVES: Prior experiences of medical racism harm health outcomes through reduced trust in medical recommendations and ultimately reduced treatment uptake. Unfortunately, experiencing medical racism is common among Black women. Culturally tailoring interventions can increase patient trust and treatment engagement. This secondary analysis examines the role of medical racism as a moderator of intervention use and sleep outcomes among Black women randomized to a tailored or standard internet insomnia treatment. DESIGN: Secondary analysis of a randomized clinical trial. METHODS: In total, 218

Coping with COVID-19-related anti-Asian racism and depressive symptoms: The role of social support.

Growing evidence highlights the adverse mental health consequences linked to the surge in COVID-19-related anti-Asian racism. However, the buffering role of social support in the context of the uniquely distressing experiences of COVID-19-related anti-Asian racism remains uncertain. Thus, our study aimed to examine the link between COVID-19-related anti-Asian racism and depressive symptoms among Asian American emerging adults and to assess whether social support might moderate this relationship. Using data from 139 Asian American participants (Mage = 23.04), we conducted moderation analyses us

Policy solutions to eliminate racial and ethnic child health disparities in the USA.

Societal systems act individually and in combination to create and perpetuate structural racism through both policies and practices at the local, state, and federal levels, which, in turn, generate racial and ethnic health disparities. Both current and historical policy approaches across multiple sectors-including housing, employment, health insurance, immigration, and criminal legal-have the potential to affect child health equity. Such policies must be considered with a focus on structural racism to understand which have the potential to eliminate or at least attenuate disparities. Policy ef

Advancing Research To Address The Health Impacts Of Structural Racism In US Immigration Prisons.

The US is the world leader in imprisoning immigrants. Its mass immigration detention system emerged as an extension of mass incarceration, rooted in a legacy of racist US immigration and criminal laws. Immigration policy is a structural determinant of health that negatively affects the health of imprisoned immigrants, their families, and their communities. The systemic harms of "detention facilities," which we refer to as "immigration prisons," have been extensively documented, yet incrementalist reforms have failed to result in improved outcomes for immigrants. We argue that ending the practi

State-Level Indicators of Structural Racism and Severe Adverse Maternal Outcomes During Childbirth.

OBJECTIVES: Structural racism (SR) is viewed as a root cause of racial and ethnic disparities in maternal health outcomes. However, evidence linking SR to increased odds of severe adverse maternal outcomes (SAMO) is scant. This study assessed the association between state-level indicators of SR and SAMO during childbirth. METHODS: Data for non-Hispanic Black and non-Hispanic white women came from the US Natality file, 2017-2018. The exposures were state-level Black-to-white inequity ratios for lower education level, unemployment, and prison incarceration. The outcome was patient-level SAMO, i

Measuring The Enduring Imprint Of Structural Racism On American Neighborhoods.

A long history of discriminatory policies in the United States has created disparities in neighborhood resources that shape ethnoracial health inequities today. To quantify these differences, we organized publicly available data on forty-two variables at the census tract level within nine domains affected by structural racism: built environment, criminal justice, education, employment, housing, income and poverty, social cohesion, transportation, and wealth. Using data from multiple sources at several levels of geography, we developed scores in each domain, as well as a summary score that we c

Investigating the impact of structural racism on black birthing people - associations between racialized economic segregation, incarceration inequality, and severe maternal morbidity.

Black birthing people are twice as likely to experience severe maternal morbidity (SMM) as their white counterparts. Structural racism provides a framework for understanding root causes of perinatal health disparities. Our objective was to investigate associations between measures of structural racism and severe maternal morbidity (SMM) among Black birthing people in the US. We linked delivery hospitalizations for Black birthing people in the National Inpatient Sample (2008-2011) with data from the American Community Survey 5-year estimates and the Vera Institute of Justice Incarceration Trend

Calling Attention to the Role of Race-Driven Societal Determinants of Health on Aggressive Tumor Biology: A Focus on Black Americans.

Blacks have the highest incidence and mortality from most cancers. The reasons for these disparities remain unclear. Blacks are exposed to adverse social determinants because of historic and contemporary racist polices; however, how these determinants affect the disparities that Blacks experience is understudied. As a result of discriminatory community policies, like redlining, Blacks have higher exposure to air pollution and neighborhood deprivation. Studies investigating how these factors affect tumor biology are emerging. We highlight the literature that connects racism-related community ex

Racism, the National Health Service, and the health of black people.

Racism has been and is central to an understanding of the health of black people in Britain. Black people have played and are playing a central role in the National Health Service (NHS). Their role is, however, shaped by racism. Their experiences as consumers of the NHS are also shaped by racism--in terms of their treatment for both physical and mental health problems. In addition, their specific health problems such as sickle cell anemia have not received the attention they deserve. The NHS has become part of the internal control system of the British racist immigration system. The cuts in th

Measuring Structural Racism to Advance Health Equity: A Scoping Review of Quantitative Approaches.

BACKGROUND: Structural racism, the interconnected policies, institutions, and norms that systematically disadvantage communities of color, remains a core determinant of health inequities in the United States. Despite growing recognition of its impact, public health lacks standardized, validated measurement tools across contexts, limiting intervention effectiveness and policy change. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, we systematically reviewed peer-reviewed studies published between January 2000 and March 2025 that quantified structural racism in relation to health outcomes in the U.S. We

Racial Disparities in Birth and Lactation Outcomes Among Neonates with Congenital Heart Defects at a Regional Mid-Atlantic Heart Center.

BACKGROUND: Evidence regarding ways in which systemic racism impacts birth and lactation among neonates with congenital heart defects (CHD) is limited. Thus, we sought to examine racial disparities among a cohort of neonates with CHD by exploring associations between birth and lactation outcomes and individual and community-level indicators of systemic racism. METHODS: This was a post hoc analysis of retrospective electronic health record (EHR) data from hospitalized neonates who had cardiac surgery and resided in the same county as the pediatric hospital (n = 20; 2016-2020). Examining adverse childhood experiences and Black youth's engagement in a hospital-based violence intervention program using administrative data.

BACKGROUND: Stemming from poverty and systemic racism, Black youth are disproportionately represented in hospital-based violence intervention programs (HVIPs) due to greater violence exposure. HVIPs are a critical intervention that have been shown to reduce rates of reinjury in urban hospitals and trauma centers across the United States; however, they are plagued by low enrollment and engagement rates. Few studies have examined factors related to engagement, particularly among Black youth. METHODS: Guided by Trauma Theory and Critical Race Theory, this study uses a retrospective cohort design

The neurobiology of social stress resulting from Racism: Implications for pain disparities among racialized minorities.

Extant literature posits that humans experience two types of threat: physical threat and social threat. While describing pain as "physical" or "social" can be helpful for understanding pain origins (i.e., broken bone versus lost relationship), this dichotomy is largely artificial and not particularly helpful for understanding how the human brain experiences pain. One real world example of social exclusion and rejection that is threatening and likely to bring about significant stress is racism. Racism is a system of beliefs, practices, and policies that operates to disadvantage racialized minor

"Morbus Mediterraneus" and its impact on medical care in Germany: the intersection of pain and racism.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In German healthcare, the colloquial term "Morbus Mediterraneus" is often used to dismiss pain complaints from racialized patients-particularly women of Mediterranean or non-White backgrounds-as exaggerated or dramatized. Although this label has no scientific basis, it perpetuates biased assumptions that lead to serious consequences, including undertreatment, misdiagnoses, and loss of trust in medical institutions. This paper provides a conceptual and literature-based analysis of how "Morbus Mediterraneus" reflects broader racist beliefs about pain tolerance, rooted i

Experiences of racism in the U.S. - A perspective from Asian & Pacific Islander, Black, Latina, and Middle Eastern women.

INTRODUCTION: Racism is a critical social determinant of health because it can have a direct impact on health and well-being, as well as infiltrate systems, policies, and practices. Few studies have explored the similarities and differences of experiences with racism and health between different minoritized groups. The objective of this paper is to examine how racism influences life experiences from the perspectives of Asian & Pacific Islander, Black, Latina, and Middle Eastern women. Structural racism and the impact on incarcerated midlife women.

High recidivism rates indicate that current forms of imprisonment may be an ineffective response to problems that mainly burden those ensconced in poverty and marginalization. Homelessness, unemployment, racial disparities, drug use, and mental illness, disappear from public view when the afflicted individuals are relegated to a life behind bars. Women are the fastest growing prison population and most incarcerated women are from Black and Latinx groups. Structural racism encompasses the many ways in which society fosters racial discrimination through mutually reinforcing unfair systems of hou
