A 70-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital due to difficulty in moving her limbs. She had trismus and a necrotic and contaminated wound in her left lower leg. A diagnosis of tetanus was confirmed and intensive care was started. On the second day, her blood pressure fell and a ST segment elevation on electrocardiography (ECG) was detected. She was diagnosed with takotsubo cardiomyopathy by echocardiogram and improved undergoing conservative therapy.

Background. Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is associated with increased risk of ventricular arrhythmias, atrial fibrillation, and bradyarrhythmias. However, sinus node dysfunction is relatively infrequent in the setting of takotsubo cardiomyopathy. Case Report. We are reporting a case of a 73-year-old woman with a history of asymptomatic sinus bradycardia who developed sick sinus syndrome complicated by takotsubo cardiomyopathy. Conclusion. Acute symptomatic sick sinus syndrome in patients with preexisting silent sinus node dysfunction can trigger takotsubo cardiomyopathy. Understanding precipitatin

SUMMARY: Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TC) is an atypical, severe but reversible form of acute heart insufficiency. It typically presents with left ventricular failure, transient apical and mid-segments hypokinesis, absence of significant coronary stenosis and new electrographic abnormalities and/or elevation in serum cardiac enzymes. Although TC ('broken heart syndrome') has classically been associated with emotional trauma, evidence suggests that other precipitants might exist, including iatrogenic and thyroid-mediated forms. Thyroid disease is a relatively common comorbidity in TC patients. We

OBJECTIVE: Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM) is characterized by transient apical ventricular dysfunction typically induced by acute stress. Acute cerebral events including ischemic stroke (IS) or epileptic events (EEs) may be associated with massive catecholamine release. We aimed to identify the characteristics and outcomes of patients who experienced the Takotsubo syndrome complicated by IS or EE.
METHODS: Between 2008 and 2013, 87 patients were admitted to our intensive care unit for TCM. Of these, 6 had previously experienced acute cerebral symptoms within 2 days of experiencing either IS o

A 67-year-old female scuba diver developed a typical immersion pulmonary oedema (IPE), but investigations strongly indicated Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TC). The cardiac abnormalities included increased cardiac enzymes, electrocardiographic anomalies and echocardiographic changes, all reverting to normal within days. This case demonstrates a similarity and association between IPE and TC, and the importance of prompt cardiac investigations both in the investigation of IPE and in making the diagnosis of TC.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) is a well-recognised entity that commonly manifests with chest pain, ST segment abnormalities and transient left ventricular apical ballooning without coronary artery obstructive disease. This syndrome usually portends a favourable outcome. In the rare haemodynamically unstable TTC patients, acute mitral regurgitation (MR) related to systolic anterior motion (SAM) of the mitral valve and left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (LVOTO) is to be considered. Bedside echocardiography is key in recognition of this latter condition as vasodilators, inotropic agents

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is an increasingly recognised syndrome characterised by transient apical left ventricular dysfunction in the absence of significant coronary artery disease. We describe a case of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy complicated by Dressler's syndrome. To our knowledge, these two conditions have not previously been reported in combination.

OBJECTIVE: Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, which is characterized by transient left ventricular apical ballooning, is a known complication of subarachnoid hemorrhage. The aim of this study was to identify the clinical characteristics of acute ischemic stroke patients who experienced development of takotsubo cardiomyopathy.
METHODS: Seven patients who were diagnosed as having takotsubo cardiomyopathy based on their electrocardiographic and echocardiographic findings were studied. They were selected from among 569 consecutive patients who were admitted to our stroke center within 24 hours after onset

BACKGROUND: The conventional view holds that left ventricular (LV) apical ballooning in stress cardiomyopathy is caused by a hyperadrenergic state related to emotional or physical stress. However, some suggest ballooning also occurs in obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) when obstruction becomes severe. Nearly all cases of apical ballooning in HCM were reported in patients with LV outflow tract obstruction. Herein, we present a case due to mid-ventricular obstruction.
CASE SUMMARY: A 52-year-old woman presented with dyspnoea and chest pain. She denied any recent emotional or physica

BACKGROUND: The impact of diabetes mellitus (DM) on outcomes of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TC) remains unclear, with conflicting evidence suggesting either protective or harmful effects. This study evaluates the association between DM and in-hospital outcomes in TC patients.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the National Inpatient Sample database (2016-2019) was conducted to compare in-hospital outcomes in TC patients with and without DM. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality, while secondary outcomes included cardiac arrest, cardiogenic shock, and acute kidney injury (AKI). Propens

Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy, also known as "broken heart syndrome," is a transient cardiac condition characterized by sudden left ventricular dysfunction, often triggered by emotional stress or significant life events. While research has predominantly focused on the impact of negative emotions and emotional stressors, there is a growing interest in understanding the role of positive emotions in this unique cardiac syndrome. This narrative review explores the emerging research on positive emotions and Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy. It provides an overview of studies investigating the relationship betwe

QT prolongation is present in 26-52% of cases of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM). It has been postulated to result from reduced cardiac repolarization reserve and reflects the transient myocardial insult observed in TCM. Bradycardia-induced QT interval prolongation is amplified by the occurrence of TCM, a combination that potentially carries a significant risk for torsade de pointes (TdP). We present a unique case of an 80-year-old female with TCM-related cardiac arrest. The patient had acquired long QT syndrome in which TCM myocardial insult led to the precipitation of a third-degree atriovent

A woman in her 50s with a background of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease secondary to smoking presented with intermittent chest tightness, dyspnoea and vomiting for 4 days. A presumed diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) was made based on dynamic ischaemic ECG changes and elevation in high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T levels. She underwent emergent coronary angiography which demonstrated mild coronary artery disease with left ventriculography suggestive of mid-wall variant Takotsubo cardiomyopathy. Thyroid function tests performed to investigate sinus tachycardia were consistent w

Licensed independent practitioners in emergency clinical practice are tasked with differentiating acute cardiac presentations. Despite its similarity in clinical presentation to acute coronary syndrome, Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is a unique cardiac disorder characterized by a stress-induced ballooning of the myocardium. Also known as the broken heart syndrome, Takotsubo cardiomyopathy most frequently occurs after an overwhelming emotional or physical stressor. The subsequent impaired contractility of the heart places the patient at risk of complications, including acute heart failure, cardiogen

UNLABELLED: A 56-year-old woman presented with cognitive impairment, confusion and slowed speech, muscle cramps and peripheral paraesthesia preceded by vomiting. Blood tests revealed severe hypokalaemia, hyponatremia, hypomagnesemia and hypocalcaemia. Following a diagnosis of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy based on ultrasonography, the patient was treated with electrolyte supplementation and recovered within 48h. When heart failure is suspected, electrolyte abnormalities should be carefully ruled out as they can affect cardiac function.

Here we present the case of a patient with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma who was admitted to hospital for an elective autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplant after cytotoxic treatment with lomustine, cytarabine, cyclophosphomide and etoposide (LACE). On the final day of chemotherapeutic treatment, she developed sudden onset dyspnoea. Electrocardiography confirmed acute antero-lateral T-wave inversion. She went onto have coronary angiography that demonstrated unobstructed coronary arteries. Left ventriculography demonstrated apical ballooning, consistent with Takotsubo (stress) cardiom
