Three-dimensional analysis of tarsal bone response to axial loading in patients with hallux valgus and normal feet.

BACKGROUND: Patients with hallux valgus present a variety of symptoms that may be related to the type of deformity. Weightbearing affects the deformities, and the evaluation of the load response of tarsal bones has been mainly performed using two-dimensional plane radiography. The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare structural changes in the medial foot arch between patients with hallux valgus and normal controls using a computer image analysis technique and weightbearing computed tomography data. METHODS: Eleven patients with hallux valgus and eleven normal controls were inc

Vascularized scapular free bone graft after nonunion of a tarsal navicular stress fracture: a case report.

Nonunion of a tarsal navicular stress fracture, although relatively uncommon, is often amenable to open reduction and internal fixation. Furthermore, avascular necrosis of the navicular whether intact or occurring after fracture is rare, secondary to the adequate blood supply it receives. However, persistent nonunion after primary surgical repair in conjunction with avascular necrosis often results in limited treatment options. Thus, the purpose of the present case report is to describe the surgical approach and complications of a vascularized scapular free bone graft for augmentation of revis

Dominant mesomelic dysplasia, ankle, carpal, and tarsal synostosis type: a new autosomal dominant bone disorder.

A new type of mesomelic dysplasia was in 3 generations of a large Thai family. It is characterized by bilateral symmetrical marked shortening of the ulnae and shortening and bowing of the radii. The proximal fibula is usually short and synostoses are present between the tibia and fibula and the small malformed calcaneus and talus. The prominent calcanei on the ventral surfaces of the distal fibulae are a characteristic feature of the new type. Carpal and tarsal synostoses are present in some affected people. All affected individuals walk on the tips of their toes with the dorsal foot deviated

A retrospective magnetic resonance imaging analysis of bone and soft tissue changes associated with the spectrum of tarsal coalitions.

We aimed to investigate the bone and soft tissue changes accompanying tarsal coalition (TC) and aimed to evaluate their association with the location and type of coalition. Ankle magnetic resonance imagings of 65 patients with TC were included. The relationship between the location and type of coalition and bone marrow edema, subchondral cysts, sinus tarsi syndrome, tarsal tunnel syndrome, posterior impingement syndrome, accessory bone, tibiotalar effusion, talar osteochondritis dissecans, ganglion cysts, and calcaneal spur were evaluated. Twenty-nine patients without coalition were selected a

Localized naviculocuneiform arthrodesis combined with osteosynthesis of fracture nonunion of the tarsal navicular bone using a locked plating system.

AIMS: Navicular fracture is still challenging disorder to treat because there is a risk of nonunion, avascular necrosis and symptomatic osteoarthritis. PATIENTS METHODS AND RESULTS: A 40-year-old woman with an ununited fracture of the tarsal navicular bone was treated with localized naviculocuneiform arthrodesis (arthrodesis of the navicular, the middle cuneiform, and the lateral cuneiform). Fusion with the navicular, the middle cuneiform, and the lateral cuneiform as well as union of fracture of the navicular was confirmed on the radiographs. CONCLUSION: Localized naviculocuneiform arthrode

Fractographic examination of racing greyhound central (navicular) tarsal bone failure surfaces using scanning electron microscopy.

The greyhound is a fatigue fracture model of a short distance running athlete. Greyhounds have a high incidence of central (navicular) tarsal bone (CTB) fractures, which are not associated with overt trauma. We wished to determine whether these fractures occur because of accumulation of fatigue microdamage. We hypothesized that bone from racing dogs would show site-specific microdamage accumulation, causing predisposition to structural failure. We performed a fractographic examination of failure surfaces from fractured bones using scanning electron microscopy and assessed microcracking observe

An unusual case of chronic lateral foot pain following ankle inversion injury: osteoid osteoma of the tarsal cuboid bone.

Osteoid osteomas are common benign tumors normally seen in the femur, tibia, and spine. They rarely are seen in the foot. We present an unusual case of osteoid osteoma of the cuboid in a 26-year-old man. This was initially thought to be an ankle sprain, as its first presentation was after a sporting injury. It was then treated as an infection before the true diagnosis--that of osteoid osteoma--was obtained.

Chronic Midfoot Pain Due to Idiopathic Osteonecrosis of Tarsal Navicular Bone in Adult - Mueller-Weiss Syndrome: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Mueller-Weiss syndrome is a rare condition seen in adults due to spontaneous osteonecrosis of tarsal navicular bone unlike Koehler's disease which is quite common in paediatric population. CASE REPORT: We report a single case of Mueller-Weiss syndrome in an adult female. After a trail of conservative treatment, operative management was done with excision of necrotic fragment and arthrodesis of mid-foot joints augmented with tricortical iliac crest graft. Good fusion and significant reduction of pain on weight-bearing was observed after a duration of 6 weeks. CONCLUSION: Mueller

Tarsal Bone Dysplasia in Clubfoot as Measured by Ultrasonography: Can It be Used as a Prognostic Indicator in Congenital Idiopathic Clubfoot? A Prospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV )/clubfoot is the most common congenital orthopedic condition. The success rate of Ponseti casting in the hands of the legend himself is not 100%. The prediction of difficult to correct foot and recurrences still remains a mystery to be solved. We all know that tarsal bones are dysplastic in clubfoot and considering it; we hypothesize that the amount of tarsal dysplasia can predict management duration and outcome. In literature we were not able to find studies that satisfactorily quantify the amount of tarsal dysplasia. Hence, it was considered

Effect of graft shape in lateral column lengthening on tarsal bone position and subtalar and talonavicular contact pressure in a cadaveric flatfoot model.

BACKGROUND: Lateral column lengthening (LCL) has been used for correction of flatfoot deformity. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of LCL graft shape on tarsal bone position and talonavicular and subtalar joint pressure. METHODS: A flatfoot model was created in 6 cadaveric specimens. Corrective LCL was performed using a rectangular graft or a trapezoidal graft with the broad surface oriented dorsally, laterally, or plantarly. Bony surface markers were digitized to calculate angular parameters used in the evaluation of flatfoot deformity. Contact pressure and area in the su

Enhancement of evaluating flatfoot on a weight-bearing lateral radiograph of the foot with U-Net based semantic segmentation on the long axis of tarsal and metatarsal bones in an active learning manner.

Robust labeling for semantic segmentation in radiographs is labor-intensive. No study has evaluated flatfoot-related deformities using semantic segmentation with U-Net on weight-bearing lateral radiographs. Here, we evaluated the robustness, accuracy enhancement, and efficiency of automated measurements for flatfoot-related angles using semantic segmentation in an active learning manner. A total of 300 consecutive weight-bearing lateral radiographs of the foot were acquired. The first 100 radiographs were used as the test set, and the following 200 radiographs were used as the training and val

Characterization of Normal Murine Carpal Bone Development Prompts Re-Evaluation of Pathologic Osteolysis as the Cause of Human Carpal-Tarsal Osteolysis Disorders.

Multicentric carpal-tarsal osteolysis; multicentric osteolysis, nodulosis, and arthropathy; and Winchester syndromes, skeletal dysplasias characterized by carpal/tarsal and epiphyseal abnormalities, are caused by mutations in v-maf musculoaponeurotic fibrosarcoma oncogene ortholog B (MAFB), matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) 2, and MMP14, respectively; however, the underlying pathophysiology is unclear. Osteoclast-mediated osteolysis has been regarded as the main mechanism, but does not explain the skeletal distribution. We hypothesized that MAFB, MMP-2, and MMP-14 have integral roles in carpal/ta

Treatment of Spontaneous Osteonecrosis of the Tarsal Navicular With a Free Medial Femoral Condyle Vascularized Bone Graft: A New Approach to Managing a Difficult Problem.

UNLABELLED: Adult-onset spontaneous osteonecrosis of the tarsal navicular joint, or Mueller-Weiss syndrome (MWS), is an uncommon debilitating disease characterized by a painful clinical course with progressive midfoot deformity. Treatment options include nonoperative management and/or operative intervention, including percutaneous decompression of the navicular bone, stabilization of existing structures, and cancellous bone grafting from the tibia or iliac crest. To our knowledge, there have been no reported cases of treatment of MWS with a vascularized bone graft. We report an unusual case of

Nonsyndromic Massive Tarsal and Tarsometatarsal Coalitions in a Young Female.

Tarsal coalition is an abnormal connection between 2 or more tarsal bones, with the most common sites being between the talus and the calcaneus and between the navicular and the calcaneus. The occurrence of multiple and massive tarsal coalitions is rare. We describe a rare case of nonsyndromic bilateral tarsal coalition involving most of the tarsal bones and extending to the metatarsal bones in a 4-year-old female. The condition was not painful and did not affect her gait. The main concern was the abnormal shape of her feet. Tarsal coalition can occur as an isolated anomaly or in association w
