Differential environmental effects on lesions, early growth, and mortality of imperfect albino (Sal-c) chicks.

A series of experiments investigated early pleiotropic effects of a gene for imperfect albinism (s(al-c) in a population of chickens at Jouy-en-Josas, France. An elevated incidence of lesions of the navel, hocks, and nares typical of imperfect albinos were seen on these chicks, confirming their existence in this population. Variations in hatching environment and the amount of light in the hatcher both implicated in contributing to the occurrence of lesions of the hocks and nares, but not to those of the naval. In two experiments, using batteries and cages, early growth was reduced among albino

Multiple nonlethal congenital anomalies in a llama.

Whereas numerous congenital anomalies in South American camelids have been reported, multiple anomalies are uncommon. A young llama evaluated for bilateral hind limb lameness was found to have cranially rotated tibial tarsal bones as well as bilateral carpus and tarsus valgus and a ventricular septal defect. These anomalies were likely hereditary, and llamas so affected should not be bred.

Fractures of the central and third tarsal bones in horses.

The case histories and follow-up data for 11 horses with slab fractures of the central or 3rd tarsal bones were examined for information pertaining to the diagnosis, which was difficult to identify, treatment, which was proven ineffective, and the prognosis, which was shown to be poor for return to racing. The purpose of the study was to define the results that could be obtained by nonoperative methods, in an attempt to determine whether surgical treatment was advisable. Nine of the horses were Standardbreds and 2 were Thoroughbreds; all horses were 2 to 4 years old and were being exercised at

The functional anatomy of the hindlimb of some African Viverridae (Carnivora).

The functional anatomy of the hindlimb of 12 species of viverrids was studied with relation to locomotion. The animals were allocated to primary locomotor categories on the basis of their anatomy and locomotion. The climbing, arboreal walking category (Nandinia binotata) is characterized by a small sacroiliac articulation, the iliopsoas inserts onto a medially located lesser trochanter and the femoral condyles are not posteriorly placed. The hindfoot is plantigrade and its structure permits considerable movement. The pads are soft and the claws retractile. Representatives of the arboreal and t

Percutaneous plate arthrodesis in small animals.

Arthrodesis is an elective surgical procedure designed to eliminate articular pain and dysfunction by deliberate osseous fusion. A percutaneous approach can be used to perform tarsal and carpal arthrodeses in dogs and cats. Intraoperative imaging facilitates cartilage debridement performed with a burr inserted through stab incisions. The plate is introduced through an epiperiosteal tunnel and secured with screws inserted through the skin insertion incisions. Additional screws can be placed through separate stab incisions. The primary advantage of this technique is a decreased risk of soft tiss

Healed fracture of the tibia in a bison (Bison menneri) from the late Early Pleistocene site of Untermassfeld (Thuringia, Germany).

We present the case of a healed tibial fracture in a fossil bison (Bison menneri) from the late Early Pleistocene site of Untermassfeld. The tibia belonged to a large bull and was found as part of an articulated unit, including the lateral malleolus and the elements of the tarsus. A comminuted fracture had occurred in the midshaft region, with considerable overriding of the two main fragments. The fracture healed with shortening and angulation of the bone, and the misaligned fragments are firmly united by a thick bridging callus that exhibits a coarse surface structure. This indicates that the

Equine Standing Multidetector Computed Tomography of the Distal Thoracic Limb and Tarsus Has a Lower Cumulative Radiation Dose than Digital Radiography.

Recent technological advancements in CT have improved the ability to scan standing sedated horses. However, the impact of radiation exposure on veterinary staff while scanning the extremities of standing horses using this technique, compared with digital radiography (DR), remains unknown. This study compares the radiation exposure of imaging technicians assisting with multidetector CT (MDCT) and DR of the distal thoracic limb and tarsus in standing horses. Personal dose equivalent was measured on four body locations: thyroid gland, gonads, hand, and feet. Images of the distal thoracic limb (n

Proximal tibiotarsal infarcts in turkeys.

Necrotic lesions in the proximal tibiotarsal bones of turkeys were evaluated by pathologic and bacteriologic examinations. Lesions were compatible with infarcts and were grossly visible as focal, gray-black, red-black, or entirely black triangular areas in the growth plate and proximal metaphysis at the posterior-medial angle of the tibial head. The lesions were detected in 408 of 1000 (41%) tibias that were collected at seven processing plants. Histologic lesions were characterized by thrombosed blood vessels and a well-demarcated focal area of necrosis primarily in the growth plate. No infla

Heterochronic differences of Hoxa-11 expression in Xenopus fore- and hind limb development: evidence for lower limb identity of the anuran ankle bones.

The wrist (carpus) and ankle (tarsus) of most tetrapods, as well as the wrist of anurans, contains relatively small nodular skeletal elements. The anuran tarsus, however, comprises a pair of long bones, the proximal tarsals tibiale and fibulare, which resemble the lower leg bones, tibia and fibula (zeugopodium). In this paper we investigate whether the proximal tarsals of Xenopus are of zeugopodial character identity, i.e. whether they develop under the influence of the same genes that pattern the lower limb. We compare Hoxa-11 expression in the forelimb bud with that in the hind limb bud by w

Prevalence of osteochondral lesions in the fetlock and hock joints of Standardbred horses that survived bacterial infection before 6 months of age.

BACKGROUND: Young Standardbred horses frequently develop fragments in joints. Some fragments represent osteochondrosis; others are considered developmental, but it is uncertain whether they result from preceding osteochondrosis. Osteochondrosis occurs as a consequence of failure of the cartilage canal blood supply and ischaemic chondronecrosis. In heritably predisposed foals, failure was associated with incorporation of vessels into bone. However, bacterial vascular failure was also recently documented in foals suffering spontaneous infections, proving that bacteria can cause osteochondral les

Amputation for histiocytic sarcoma in a cat.

A 9-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat presented with a skin lesion of the left tarsus. The lesion was biopsied and, based on the microscopic appearance and immunohistochemical characteristics, histiocytic sarcoma was diagnosed. Amputation was performed with improved demeanor seen postoperatively. However, between 44 and 60 days following the surgery, relapse of skin lesions appeared in multiple locations, including at the previous amputation site, and euthanasia was elected. This is the first report of a histiocytic sarcoma treated with amputation in a cat.

Indirect genetic effects across ontogeny in an avian cooperative breeder.

Social interactions are ubiquitous in nature and have the potential to affect trait evolution, particularly in group-living animals such as cooperative breeders. Interactions among conspecific individuals can affect the amount of additive genetic variation for a trait when the phenotype of an individual is also affected by the genotype of its social partner(s) via indirect genetic effects. Thus, quantifying both direct and indirect genetic effects of social partners is critical for understanding and predicting evolutionary trajectories. While much is known about maternal indirect genetic effec

Risk factors associated with dairy cattle lameness and hock and knee injuries on Iranian dairy farms.

Both lameness and hock and knee injuries represent significant welfare and economic concerns on dairy farms. However, there is a notable lack of data from certain housing systems, including bedded-pack farms and a few studies that compare free-stalls with bedded-pack farms. The objective of this study was therefore to utilise data collected during a welfare assessment to identify key risk factors for lameness and leg injuries in these housing systems. A generalised linear mixed model was used to identify risk factors associated with hock and knee injuries, whereas for lameness a binomial regre

Prevalence of and risk factors for hock and knee injuries on dairy cows in tiestall housing in Canada.

Leg injuries on dairy cows are a common and highly visible welfare concern on commercial dairy farms. With greater attention being placed on food animal welfare and limited research being conducted on tiestall farms, this study aimed to identify prevalence and risk factors for hock and knee injuries on dairy cows housed in tiestall barns in Ontario (n=40) and Quebec (n=60). A sample of 40 cows was purposively selected per farm and several animal- and farm-based measures were taken. Both hocks and both knees on each cow were scored as injured (presence of lesions or swelling) or not injured (no
