Telangiectasis in CREST syndrome and systemic sclerosis: correlation of clinical and pathological features with response to pulsed dye laser treatment.

Telangiectasia are cardinal features of systemic sclerosis (SS) and calcinosis, Raynaud's syndrome, esophageal motility, sclerodactyly, telangiectasias (CREST) syndrome. The etiology of telangiectasia in these syndromes is unknown, but vascular dysfunction has been proposed. However, the telangiectasia of CREST have anecdotally been considered relatively resistant to pulse dye laser (PDL), the treatment of choice for classic telangiectasia. The study was designed to test whether SS/CREST telangiectasia require more treatments than sporadic telangiectasia and to identify clinical and histologic

Coats' disease of the retina (unilateral retinal telangiectasis) caused by somatic mutation in the NDP gene: a role for norrin in retinal angiogenesis.

Coats' disease is characterized by abnormal retinal vascular development (so-called 'retinal telangiectasis') which results in massive intraretinal and subretinal lipid accumulation (exudative retinal detachment). The classical form of Coats' disease is almost invariably isolated, unilateral and seen in males. A female with a unilateral variant of Coats' disease gave birth to a son affected by Norrie disease. Both carried a missense mutation within the NDP gene on chromosome Xp11.2. Subsequently analysis of the retinas of nine enucleated eyes from males with Coats' disease demonstrated in one

Iodine-123 IMP SPECT before and after bypass surgery in a patient with occlusion of left anterior and middle cerebral arteries with basal abnormal telangiectasis (unilateral Moyamoya disease).

A case of left anterior and middle cerebral arterial occlusion with angiographic features similar to Moyamoya disease was reported. IMP SPECT of the patient revealed the success of bypass surgery clearly. The patient complained of transient right hemiparesis with aphasia 4 times. The cerebral arteriography disclosed occlusions of left anterior and middle cerebral arteries at their proximal portions. Right internal carotid and its branches were normal. I-123 IMP SPECT study showed hypoperfusion in left temporal lobe, basal ganglia with incomplete reperfusion on the delayed (4 hours after inject

Coats' disease and central nervous system venous malformation.

Primary retinal telangiectasis or Coats' disease is a non-hereditary retinal vascular abnormality consisting of incompetent telangiectatic and aneurysmal retinal vessels. It is characteristically found unilaterally in boys and occasionally may be associated with other systemic disorders. The authors report the first case of primary retinal telangiectasis with a concomitant diffuse central nervous system venous abnormality.

Long non-coding RNA expression profiles in hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia.

Hereditary Haemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT) is an autosomal dominantly inherited vascular disease characterized by the presence of mucocutaneous telangiectasia and arteriovenous malformations in visceral organs. HHT is predominantly caused by mutations in ENG and ACVRL1, which both belong to the TGF-β signalling pathway. The exact mechanism of how haploinsufficiency of ENG and ACVRL1 leads to HHT manifestations remains to be identified. As long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are increasingly recognized as key regulators of gene expression and constitute a sizable fraction of the human transcriptom

[Coats disease].

Coats disease is characterized by idiopathic congenital retinal telangiectasis and exudative retinopathy. Mostly young males are affected. The disease is usually unilateral. Visual prognosis varies from full visual acuity to blindness according to the extent of retinal exudation. Retinoblastoma is a major differential diagnosis particularly in small children but other causes of exudative retinopathy must also be considered. Treatment aims include obliteration of the telangiectasis in order to resolve retinal exudation and achieve reattachment of the retina. Therapeutic options comprise laser c

Relationship between nailfold capillary abnormalities and organ involvement in systemic sclerosis.

Nailfold capillary abnormalities in 42 consecutive patients with systemic sclerosis were studied by wide field capillary microscopy, and capillary abnormalities were correlated with organ involvement. Twenty-eight patients hd diffuse skin disease, and 14 had the CREST variant of systemic sclerosis (calcinosis, Raynaud's phenomenon, esophageal dysmotility, sclerodactyly, telangiectasis) with anticentromere antibodies. Nailfold capillary enlargement and loss were graded from photographs. There was no correlation between the severity of either nailfold capillary loss or enlargement and duration o

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia.

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT), also known as Osler-Weber-Rendu disease, is a rare disorder characterized by arteriovenous communications in visceral organs. The diagnosis of HHT consists of recurrent epistaxis, mucocutaneous telangiectasis, visceral vascular lesion and familial occurrence. HHT can be definitely diagnosed with the presence of all these three criteria. The prevalence of liver involvement of HHT was reported to range from 8 to 31%. Herein, we present a 75-year-old male who was diagnosed as having HHT with liver involvement, based on the findings of recurrent epistax

Endothelial cell renewal in skin of patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS): an in vitro autoradiographic study.

The labelling index of endothelial cells of the dermal microvessels was studied by in vitro autoradiography with [3H] thymidine. 14 patients with PSS were compared with 7 control subjects, by sampling the upper-third of the forearm skin. One patient had a second biopsy in this area, on a telangiectasis. Microvessels from patients showed a significant increase in endothelial cell labelling. Within the PSS group, no difference was found between the indurated and the non-indurated skin. There was no correlation between the labelling index and the duration of the disease. A very high uptake was fo

Retinal vascular abnormalities in facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy. A general association with genetic and therapeutic implications.

Because of occasional reports of exudative retinal detachment with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSH) and deafness, we sought to determine by fluorescein angiography whether there is any general relationship between FSH muscular dystrophy and retinal vascular disease. Peripheral retinal capillary abnormalities, comprising telangiectasis, closure, leakage and microaneurysm formation, were demonstrated by angiography in 56 out of 75 individuals with clinical or genetic evidence of FSH. Only 3 patients had relevant ophthalmoscopic abnormalities of the posterior pole and in only 1 was th

Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations with suspected infiltrative disease: A case report from a peripheral hospital.

Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs) is a rare condition involving an abnormal connection of the pulmonary vasculature between the artery and vein, bypassing the capillary structure and causing a right-to-left shunt (RLS) of blood flow. This case report describes a 17-year-old female patient presenting with recurrent nose and tongue bleeding. Cyanosis and clubbing of the fingers were observed, along with visible telangiectasis on the skin and mucosal surfaces. Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasis (HHT) was diagnosed based on the Curaçao criteria. The RLS manifestations suggested a hi

[Weber-Rendu-Osler disease: pulmonary arterio-venous malformation with shunt disclosed after 5 occurrences of purulent meningococcal encephalitis].

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangectasis or Weber-Rendu-Osler disease is associated with the presence of capillary malformations with pulmonary visceral shunts. These shunts are the cause of recurrent infections of the nervous system by loss of the anti-infectious lung filter. Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasis was diagnosed in a 68-year-old woman with a history of epistaxis, cutaneous telangectasis, purulent and pyogenic brain abscesses and meningitis. Outcome was favorable with antibiotic therapy. Ventilation as well as chest x-ray, brain scan and liver ultrasongraphy were normal. Blood gases

Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia: A Review of Gene Targets and Emerging Therapies.

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasis (HHT), formerly called Osler-Weber-Rendu syndrome, is a rare autosomal-dominant vascular disorder characterized by mucocutaneous and visceral telangiectasis involving multiple organ systems, such as skin, liver, brain, and lung. While recurrent epistaxis is the most common and widely studied complication, visceral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), such as pulmonary and hepatic, pose more serious complications yet remain under-recognized. These AVMs can lead to life-threatening complications, such as paradoxical emboli, stroke, significant gastrointestina
