Cytoarchitectonic study of the brain of a perciform species, the sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). I. The telencephalon.

A cytoarchitectonic analysis of the telencephalon of the sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax, based on cresyl violet-stained serial transverse sections, is presented. Rostrally, the brain of the sea bass is occupied by sessile olfactory bulbs coupled to telencephalic hemispheres. The olfactory bulbs comprise an olfactory nerve fiber layer, a glomerular layer, an external cellular layer, a secondary olfactory fiber layer, and an internal cellular layer. Large terminal nerve ganglion cells are evident in the caudomedial olfactory bulbs. We recognized 22 distinct telencephalic nuclei which were classif

Auditory pathways of caudal telencephalon and their relation to the song system of adult male zebra finches.

Auditory information is critical for vocal imitation and other elements of social life in song birds. In zebra finches, neural centers that are necessary for the acquisition and production of learned vocalizations are known, and they all respond to acoustic stimulation. However, the circuits by which conspecific auditory signals are perceived, processed, and stored in long-term memory have not been well documented. In particular, no evidence exists of direct connections between auditory and vocal motor pathways, and two newly identified centers for auditory processing, caudomedial neostriatum

Thalamic nuclei that project to reptilian telencephalon lack GABA and GAD immunoreactive neurons and puncta.

Brains of reptiles, Caiman crocodilus, were processed by standard immunocytochemical methodology using a polyclonal antibody to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) raised in rabbit and a polyclonal antibody to glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) raised in sheep. No GABA(+) or GAD(+) cells or puncta were observed over any thalamic nucleus known to project to the telencephalon in Caiman. These findings suggest that all thalamic nuclei that project to the telencephalon in Caiman lack intrinsic cells and presumably direct inhibitory input mediated by GABA.

Social isolation impairs active avoidance performance and decreases neurogenesis in the dorsomedial telencephalon of rainbow trout.

Alterations in the social environment, such as isolating an individual that would normally live in a social group, can generate physiological responses that compromise an individual's capacity to learn. To investigate this, we tested whether social isolation impairs learning skills in the rainbow trout. We show that rainbow trout can achieve an active avoidance (AA) learning program with inter-individual variability. Moreover, c-Fos expression in dorsomedial telencephalon (Dm) correlates with the AA performance, indicating that this structure is involved in this cognitive task. Given that Dm p

Hypoxia-ischemia induces an endogenous reparative response by local neural progenitors in the postnatal mouse telencephalon.

Perinatal hypoxia-ischemia in the preterm neonate commonly results in white matter injury for which there is no specific therapy. The subventricular zone (SVZ) of the brain harbors neural stem cells and more committed progenitors including oligodendroglial progenitor cells that might serve as replacement cells for treating white matter injury. Data from rodent models suggest limited replacement of mature oligodendroglia by endogenous cells. Rare newly born mature oligodendrocytes have been reported within the striatum, corpus callosum and infarcted cortex 1 month following hypoxia-ischemia. Wh

Pharmacological effects on mirror approaching behavior and neurochemical aspects of the telencephalon in the fish, medaka (Oryzias latipes).

Shoaling can be considered a simple form of affective behavior displayed by social fish in which a single fish exhibits an tendency to approach others. In the present study, we adopted a dual approach to investigate shoaling behavior in the medaka fish (Oryzias latipes): a behavioral pharmacological approach to assess mirror approaching behavior and an immunohistochemical approach to examine the neurotransmitter distribution in the medaka telencephalon. In order to gain an insight into shoaling activity, we examined the pharmacological effects of the positive allosteric modulator of the gamma-

Dorsal telencephalon-specific RA-GEF-1 knockout mice develop heterotopic cortical mass and commissural fiber defect.

Neural migration defects lead to various types of human malformations of cortical development including subcortical band heterotopia, which shows formation of a secondary cortical plate beneath the primary cortex and is typically caused by mutation of the DCX (doublecortin) gene. Subcortical band heterotopia is usually associated with mental retardation and epilepsy. We previously discovered RA-GEF-1 as a guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) for Rap1 small GTPase. Here we have analysed its in-vivo role in formation of the adult cerebral cortex by using telencephalon-specific RA-GEF-1 condi

Nuclei and Tracts in the Telencephalon of Crocodiles: Identification and Characterization Using an Organizational Scheme Applicable to Other Reptiles.

The telencephalon of reptiles has been suggested to be the key to understanding the evolution of the forebrain. Nevertheless, a meaningful framework to organize the telencephalon in any reptile has, with rare exception, yet to be presented. To address this gap in knowledge, the telencephalon was investigated in two species of crocodiles. A variety of morphological stains were used to examine tissue in transverse, horizontal, and sagittal planes of sections. Besides providing a description of individual nuclei, brain parts were organized based on two features. One was related to two fixed, inte

Effects of dopaminergic drugs on locomotor activity in teleost fish of the genus Oreochromis (Cichlidae): involvement of the telencephalon.

Single Oreochromis niloticus and O. mossambicus were placed in an unfamiliar white basin for 21 min, and their activity in this open-field situation was recorded from overhead on video. Apomorphine added to the water (2-8 mg/liter) caused a significant increase in locomotor activity, as assessed by the frequency that a fish swam over a rectilinear array of lines drawn on the base. This effect was attenuated by chlorpromazine (2 mg/liter) and abolished by the D1 antagonist SCH-23390 (1 mg/liter); the D2 antagonist metoclopramide (8 mg/liter) had no effect. Removal of both hemispheres of the tel

Proteome profile of telencephalon associates attenuated neurogenesis with chronic stress induced mood disorder phenotypes in zebrafish model.

Debilitating mental illness like depression and related mood disorders is due to the disruption in circuitry that controls emotion, motivation, and reward, characterized by disparate phenotypes like decrease in socialization, motivation, threshold for threat apprehension, etc. Chronic stress is a major factor in the etiology of these disorders. Here, using a chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) paradigm the characterization of an array of mood disorder phenotypes in adult zebrafish, in comparison to normal control unstressed fish, was achieved using a battery of behavioral assays including novel

Molecular Control of Neural Stem Cell Quiescence in the Adult Zebrafish Telencephalon: Established Mechanisms and an Integrative Hypothesis.

The zebrafish telencephalon is an excellent model for adult neurogenesis under physiological and regenerative conditions, as many pathways regulating neural stem cell behavior are conserved with mammalian neurogenic niches. Resident radial glial cells (RGCs) serve as neural stem cells in the adult brain and are readily accessible in vivo, because forebrain eversion repositions the ventricular zone to the dorsal surface. Recent studies have revealed substantial heterogeneity among RGCs, including activation-primed cells and deeply quiescent states during homeostasis. Here, we first review the e

An experimental study of the connections of the telencephalon in the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). I: Olfactory bulb and ventral area.

The fluorescent carbocyanine dye 1,1'-dioctadecyl 3,3,3',3'-tetramethylindocarbocyanine perchlorate (DiI) was used in fixed tissue to comprehensively analyze the connections of the olfactory bulbs and the different regions of the ventral (V) area of the telencephalic lobes (subpallium) of the rainbow trout. With this goal, DiI was applied to the different telencephalic nuclei and zones, as well as to the olfactory nerve, the olfactory bulb, the retina, and to several structures in the diencephalon and brainstem of juvenile trout. The olfactory bulbs maintain reciprocal connections with several

Immunohistochemical studies on the localization and distribution of monoamine neuron systems in the rat brain II. Tyrosine hydroxylase in the telencephalon.

Extensive plexuses of TH-positive nerve terminals were found in many parts of the telencephalon, mainly confined to the subcortical and limbic cortical structures. Of special interest were the distinct networks of varying densities in the amygdaloid cortex, the entorhinal cortex, the prepiriform cortex, the anterior cingulate cortex and the (pre-)frontal cortex. Their distribution is identical with the patterns observed in recent studies on cortical dopamine nerve terminals using certain modifications of the Falck-Hillarp technique. The extremely dense TH innervations patterns of the caudate n

Comparison of the developmental effects of two mercury compounds on glial cells and neurons in aggregate cultures of rat telencephalon.

A three-dimensional cell culture system was used as a model to study the influence of low levels of mercury in the developing brain. Aggregating cell cultures of fetal rat telencephalon were treated for 10 days either during an early developmental period (i.e., between days 5 and 15 in vitro) or during a phase of advanced maturation (i.e., between days 25 and 35) with mercury. An inorganic (HgCl2) and an organic mercury compound (monomethylmercury chloride, MeHgCl) were examined. By monitoring changes in cell type-specific enzymes activities, the concentration-dependent toxicity of the compoun

Olfactory relationships of the telencephalon and diencephalon in the rabbit. III. The ipsilateral centrifugal fibers to the olfactory bulbar and retrobulbar formations.

The axoplasmic retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) from axon terminals to their parent cell bodies and histochemical fluorescence microscopy have been used to study the ipsilateral centrifugal fibers to the olfactory bulbs and anterior olfactory nucleus in the rabbit. Focal injections of peroxidase were placed unilaterally into the main or accessory olfactory bulb or into the anterior olfactory nucleus. In animals with injected HRP confined within the main bulb, perikarya retrogradely labeled with the protein in the ipsilateral forebrain were observed in the anterior prepyrifo

Age-related reductions in whole brain mass and telencephalon volume in very old white Carneau pigeons (Columba livia).

While studies have identified age-related cognitive impairment in pigeons (Columba livia), no study has detected the brain atrophy which typically accompanies cognitive impairment in older mammals. Instead, Coppola and Bingman (Aging is associated with larger brain mass and volume in homing pigeons (Columba livia), Neurosci. Letters 698 (2019) 39-43) reported increased whole brain mass and telencephalon volume in older, compared to younger, homing pigeons. One reason for this unexpected finding might be that the older pigeons studied were not old enough to display age-related brain atrophy. Th

RARbeta isoform-specific regulation of DARPP-32 gene expression: an ectopic expression study in the developing rat telencephalon.

Dopamine and adenosine 3':5'-monophosphate-regulated phosphoprotein (DARPP-32) is a key molecule for dopamine neurotransmission. The molecular mechanisms underlying the regulation of DARPP-32 in the developing brain remains elusive. Previous studies have shown that retinoids are capable of inducing DARPP-32 in striatal cell culture, suggesting that retinoids are candidate molecules for controlling DARPP-32 expression. In the present study, we first studied the expression profiles of retinoid receptors and their associated co-factors in the developing rat telencephalon by RT-PCR. The results sh

Ascending Visual Pathways to the Telencephalon in Teleosts with Special Focus on Forebrain Visual Centers, Associated Neural Circuitries, and Evolution.

Visual pathways to the telencephalon in teleost fishes have been studied in detail only in a few species, and their evolutionary history remained unclear. On the basis of our recent studies we propose that there were two visual pathways in the common ancestor of teleosts, while one of them became lost in acanthopterygian fishes that emerged relatively recently. Our in-depth analyses on the connections of visual centers also revealed that there are connections shared with those of mammals, and retinotopic organization of the ascending connections is maintained at least to the level of the dienc

Six3 cooperates with Hedgehog signaling to specify ventral telencephalon by promoting early expression of Foxg1a and repressing Wnt signaling.

Six3 exerts multiple functions in the development of anterior neural tissue of vertebrate embryos. Whereas complete loss of Six3 function in the mouse results in failure of forebrain formation, its hypomorphic mutations in human and mouse can promote holoprosencephaly (HPE), a forebrain malformation that results, at least in part, from abnormal telencephalon development. However, the roles of Six3 in telencephalon patterning and differentiation are not well understood. To address the role of Six3 in telencephalon development, we analyzed zebrafish embryos deficient in two out of three Six3-rel
