Information about the ultrastructure of connective (interstitial) cells supporting the pleural mesothelium is scarce. Our aim has been to examine whether telocytes (TCs) are present in pleura, as in epicardium and mesentery. TCs are a distinct type of cell, characterized by specific prolongations named telopodes (Tp). We have used transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron tomography (ET) to determine whether ultrastructural diagnostic criteria accepted for TCs are fulfilled by any of the cell subpopulations existing in the sub-mesothelial layer in mouse and human pleura. TCs have bee

A recently identified mesenchymal cell population, telocytes (TCs), has been found in many tissues of different animal species. Jet needle-free injection (JNFI) is a promising non-invasive drug-delivery method that can trigger effective immune responses in the skin. In this preliminary morphological study, an inactivated porcine circovirus vaccine was delivered into pig neck skin by JNFI, and untreated normal neck skin served as the control. Histopathology, immunohistochemistry (IHC), immunofluorescence (IF), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to evaluate TC distribution, ult

Telocytes are interstitial cells with long processes that cover distances in tissues and likely coordinate interacts with other cell types. Though present in central and peripheral neuronal tissues, their role remains unclear. Dorsal root ganglia (DRG) house pseudounipolar afferent neurons responsible for signals such as temperature, proprioception and nociception. This study aimed to investigate the presence and function of telocytes in human DRG by investigating their transcriptional profile, location and ultrastructure. Sequencing data revealed CD34 and PDGFRA expressing cells comprise roug

Telocytes (TCs) have been described in various organs and species (www.telocytes.com) as cells with telopodes (Tps) - very long cellular extensions with an alternation of thin segments (podomers) and dilated portions (podoms). We examined TCs using electron microscopy (EM), immunohistochemistry (IHC), immunofluorescence (IF), time-lapse videomicroscopy and whole-cell patch voltage clamp. EM showed a three-dimensional network of dichotomous-branching Tps, a labyrinthine system with homocellular and heterocellular junctions. Tps release extracellular vesicles (mean diameter of 160.6±6.9 nm in no

This study investigates the structural organization of telocytes (TCs) in the quail beak, focusing on their association with mechanoreceptors like Herbst and Ruffini corpuscles. By exploring these features, the study aim to expand the understanding of TCs' role in mechanosensation and sensory modulation. Paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin revealed TCs surrounding both Herbst and Ruffini corpuscles, as well as nerve fibers. Similar findings observed using Mallory Trichrome staining, which highlighted TCs around these sensory structures. Methylene Blue staining further confirme

Discovery of telocytes has become an important and key challenge in past few years. These cells are interstitial cells extending very long cytoplasmic processes named telopodes, by which they create functional networks in the interstitium of different organs. Telocytes are considered to be connective tissue elements that create contacts among each other, but they also function as intercellular structures, functionally connected with cells of the immune system, neurons and smooth muscle cells. Telocytes can be found also in the different parts of female reproductive system with functions and pu

The liver, intestinal epithelium, and nervous system harbor specialized cell populations whose biology has been fundamentally redefined by contemporary histological and molecular methodologies. This review synthesizes recent advances across four such populations: Kupffer cells (KCs), hepatic stellate cells (HSCs; Ito cells), enteroendocrine cells (EECs), and telocytes (TCs). KCs are now understood as ontogenetically heterogeneous, yolk sac-derived populations maintained by local self-renewal and shaped by durable epigenomic reprogramming. Their molecular identity, anchored to species-specific

From their initial description in 2005 to this day, telocytes (TCs) have been described in the ovary, uterine tubes, uterus, vagina, mammary gland, and placenta. Their morphological features, immunophenotype, physiological functions, and roles in disease have been thoroughly documented in both animal models and human subjects. TCs, with their extremely long cytoplasmic processes called telopodes, play a pivotal role in the morphological and functional interconnection of all the components of the interstitial compartment, but also with constituents of the parenchyma. Although there is no specif

BACKGROUND: Telocytes (TCs) is an interstitial cell with extremely long and thin telopodes (Tps) with thin segments (podomers) and dilations (podoms) to interact with neighboring cells. TCs have been found in different organs, while there is still a lack of TCs-specific biomarkers to distinguish TCs from the other cells.
RESULTS: We compared gene expression profiles of murine pulmonary TCs on days 5 (TC5) and days 10 (TC10) with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), fibroblasts (Fbs), alveolar type II cells (ATII), airway basal cells (ABCs), proximal airway cells (PACs), CD8(+) T cells from bronchia

Considerable evidence accumulated over the past decade supports that telocytes (TCs)/CD34+ stromal cells represent an exclusive type of interstitial cells identifiable by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) or immunohistochemistry in various organs of the human body, including the skin. By means of their characteristic cellular extensions (telopodes), dermal TCs are arranged in networks intermingled with a multitude of neighboring cells and, hence, they are thought to contribute to skin homeostasis through both intercellular contacts and releasing extracellular vesicles. In this context, fi

The tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) is a dominant marine elasmobranch predator whose respiratory physiology and gill structure enable the oxygen uptake necessary for its significant ecological role in sustaining balance within oceanic environments. The present study investigated the histological, histochemical, and ultrastructural characteristics of gill tissue in the tiger shark to elucidate the morphological adaptations that enable efficient respiration in marine environments. Histologically, the gills were housed in antero-posteriorly compressed gill pouches, with the first pair being hemib

Endogenous melatonin is a hormone secreted by pineal gland; it has several roles in metabolism, reproduction, and remarkable antioxidant properties. Studies on the melatonin effect on the adrenal glands which are important endocrine organs, controlling essential physiological functions, are still deficient. In this study, we attempted to investigate the effect of exogenous melatonin treatment on the adrenal cortex and medulla using several approaches. Adrenal glands of 15 Soay ram were examined to detect the effect of melatonin treatment. Our results revealed that the cells of adrenal cortex o

PURPOSE: Telocytes (TCs) are peculiar interstitial cells, characterized by their typical elongated and interconnected processes called telopodes. TCs are supposed to contribute to maintain tissue homeostasis but also to be involved in the pathophysiology of many disorders. The aim of the study was to identify TCs in pterygium, a chronic condition of bulbar conjunctiva, and to examine possible differences in TCs in terms of immunophenotype and/or localization between pterygium and normal conjunctiva, to evaluate the possible involvement of TCs in pathogenesis of pterygium.

Recent years have seen considerable progress in explaining the mechanisms of the pathogenesis of psoriasis, with a significant role played in it by the hyper-reactivity of Th1 and Th17 cells, Treg function disorder, as well as complex relationships between immune cells, keratinocytes, and vascular endothelium. The effect of stem cells in the epidermis and stem cells on T cells has been identified and the dysfunction of various types of stem cells may be a prime cause of dysregulation of the inflammatory response in psoriasis. However, exploring these mechanisms in detail could provide a chance

For more than 40 years, autologous platelet concentrates have been used in clinical medicine. Since the first formula used, namely platelet-rich plasma (PRP), other platelet concentrates have been experimented with, including platelet-rich fibrin and concentrated growth factor. Platelet concentrates have three standard characteristics: they act as scaffolds, they serve as a source of growth factors and cytokines, and they contain live cells. PRP has become extensively used in regenerative medicine for the successful treatment of a variety of clinical (non-)dermatological conditions like alopec
