BACKGROUND: The main tools to control malaria vectors in sub-Saharan Africa are long-lasting insecticidal nets and indoor residual spraying. However, their sustainability is threatened by the emergence of insecticide resistances, behavioral avoidance and presence of outdoor biting mosquito populations. Thus, complementary interventions such as larval source management, which includes larviciding, are required to achieve better results in malaria vector control. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of three larvicides (Aquatain AMF®, Temephos and Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensi

The Cameroon Guinea worm eradication program initiated case containment activities in 1991 in the Mayo-Sava Division, the only endemic region in the country. These activities differed from the Pakistan program, the only other operational model for dracunculiasis case containment, in two important ways. In Cameroon, next-level supervisors received reports of new cases from village health workers during routine weekly visits to endemic villages. The Pakistan program established a faster case reporting scheme that allowed higher level personnel (sector supervisors and regional managers) to confir

BACKGROUND: To date, dengue is considered an important public health problem in Sri Lanka. Irrational use of insecticides without evidence-based applications has primed the development of resistance in mosquito vectors.
METHOD: The present study investigated the resistance status of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus to commonly used insecticides in three selected Medical Officer of Health (MOH) areas (i.e., Attanagalla, Dompe, and Negombo) in Gampaha District, Western Province of Sri Lanka. Entomological surveys were performed using ovitraps and larval collections. Larval bioassays were carr

Many vector-borne diseases circulate in the Republic of Cabo Verde. These include malaria during the colonization of the archipelago by the Portuguese explorers and several arboviruses such as yellow fever (now eradicated), dengue and zika. To control these vector-borne diseases, an integrated vector control program was implemented. The main targeted mosquito vectors are Aedes aegypti and Anopheles arabiensis, and in a lesser extent the potential arbovirus vector Culex pipiens s.l. The main control strategy is focused on mosquito aquatic stages using diesel oil and Temephos. This latter has be

Neurotoxicity associated with chemotherapy is a debilitating side effect of cancer management in humans which reportedly involves inflammatory and oxidative stress responses. Diphenyl diselenide (DPDS) is an organoselenium compound which exhibits its anti-tumoral, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-mutagenic effects. Nevertheless, its possible effect on chemotherapy-induced neurotoxicity is not known. Using rat model, we probed the behavioral and biochemical effects accompanying administration of antineoplastic agent doxorubicin (7.5 mg/kg) and DPDS (5 and 10 mg/kg). Anxiogenic-like beha

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic foot disease is a common condition globally and is over-represented in indigenous populations. The propensity for patients with diabetic foot disease to undergo minor or major limb amputation is a concern. Diabetic foot disease and lower limb amputation are debilitating for patients and have a substantial financial impact on health services. The purpose of this multicentre study is to prospectively report the presentation, management and outcomes of diabetic foot disease, to validate existing scoring systems and assess long term outcomes for these patients particularly i

Culex quinquefasciatus Say (Diptera: Culicidae) is an important vector that spreads a number of diseases like lymphatic filariasis, Rift Valley fever, West Nile fever, Zika virus, and Saint Louis encephalitis. Due to long-term exposure to insecticides applied during vector control programs, these mosquito populations exhibit varying degrees of resistance in response to distinct selection pressures. Therefore, it is imperative to assess their resistance status before deploying any control programs. The present study examined the resistance status of wild Cx. quinquefasciatus mosquito larvae aga

Spinosad and temephos are two of the most used pesticides in Mexico for the control of vector causing disease such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika. The aim of this study was to compare the neurotoxic effects of these two pesticides using guppy fish (Poecilia reticulata) as a model organism. Guppies were exposed for 7 and 21 days to technical grade temephos and spinosad at 1.0 and 0.07 g/L, respectively, (10 and 0.5 mg/L of active substance; concentrations recommended by the Ministery of Health of the State (Secretaría de Salud de Nayarit (SSN) Mexico)). Subsequently, acetylcholinesterase activ

In Africa, many Aedes mosquitos are involved in yellow fever and dengue transmission. Their control can be carried out either in a "prophylactic" way, when no disease occurs, or in a "curative" one, when virus is detected in the human community. In the first event, control is confounded with sanitation measures; in the second event, insecticidal control is needed against both larvae and adults. Larvae populations are destroyed by means of insecticidal deposits in the breeding-sites. Control of adults is achieved by thermal fogs or U.L.V. applications of organophosphorous compounds dispensed fr

Although malaria is endemic in some areas of southeastern Iran, following the successful national malaria elimination plan, the local transmission area has been shrunk. The main cases in Iran are due to Plasmodium vivax followed by P. falciparum. This study was aimed to determine the current situation of malaria in Kerman Province of Iran and evaluate the insecticide resistance of main vectors. The field study was conducted in 2019. Data of new malaria cases were obtained from the health centers for the period of 2009-2018. Susceptibility status of Anopheles stephensi and An. dthali was evalua

The combination activities of temephos, fenthion and petroleum ether extract of Solanum xanthocarpum were observed for their larvicidal activities against Culex quinquefasciatus. The combination of temephos and S. xanthocarpum was studied at ratios of 1:1, 1:2, and 1:4. Similar ratios were also used for the combination of fenthion and S. xanthocarpum. The temephos/plant extract combination acted antagonistically. The combination of fenthion and plant extract acted synergistically against the target organisms at a ratio of 1:1, which showed the best results of: LC50 0.0144 and 0.0056 ppm and LC

Uganda is the only country in sub-Saharan Africa whose onchocerciasis elimination programme extensively uses vector control and biannual treatment with ivermectin. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of combined strategies on interrupting onchocerciasis transmission in the Kashoya-Kitomi focus. Mass Drug Administration annually (13 years) followed by biannual treatments (6 years) and ground larviciding (36 cycles in 3 years) with temephos (Abate®, EC500) against Simulium neavei were conducted. Routine fly catches were conducted for over seven years in six catching sites and fres

Presently, there is a need for increased efforts to develop newer and effective methods to control mosquito vectors as the existing chemical and biological methods are not as effective as in earlier period owing to different technical and operational reasons. The use of nanomaterial products in various sectors of science including health increased during the last decade. We tested three types of nanosilica, namely lipophilic, hydrophilic and hydrophobic, to assess their larvicidal, pupicidal and growth inhibitor properties and also their influence on oviposition behaviour (attraction/deterrenc

BACKGROUND: Serine proteinase inhibitors, clade B, member 3 (SerpinB3) and B4 are highly similar in amino acid sequences and associated with inflammation regulation. We investigated SerpinB3 and B4 expression and their roles in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP).
METHODS: The expression of SerpinB3 and B4 in nasal mucosa tissues, brush cells, and secretions from CRSwNP patients was measured, and their regulation by inflammatory cytokines were investigated. Their functions were also analyzed using air-liquid interface (ALI)-cultured primary human nasal epithelial cells (HNECs) a

BACKGROUND: Controlling sites where mosquitos breed is a key strategy in breaking the cycle of infectious transmission of the dengue virus. Preventive behaviors, such as covering water containers with lids and adding temephos (commercially named Abate sand) in water containers are needed to reduce and control mosquito breeding sites. This study aimed to investigate the impact of dengue-preventive behaviors on Aedes immature production.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study used in-person interviews to record occurrence of dengue-preventive behaviors in Bang Kachao, Samut Prakan Province, Thaila

Tukuyu onchocerciasis focus was earmarked for vector control using insecticide against larval stages. Susceptibility tests of mature larvae of Simulium damnosum s.l. vectors to temephos insecticide were carried out before and after two years of insecticide treatment of rivers within Tukuyu onchocerciasis focus, south-western Tanzania. The tests were done in 1999/2000 and 2004 using WHO standard methods. Mature larvae were exposed to 9 concentrations of temephos active ingredient, from the weakest 0.00975mg/litre to the strongest of 2.5mg/l. Each test concentration and control was run in duplic

Onchocerciasis vector breeding along 41 km of the Bussere River in the Wau Area of South-Western Sudan was controlled with temephos (Abate) insecticide for one annual transmission period. Vector biting and transmission was compared to the two years of precontrol data. Up to 70% reductions in vector biting and 80% reductions in transmission were recorded at sites with the highest precontrol levels. The flies invading in the control year (principally those invading from the south-west in the main part of the rainy season) were found to be much less infective - 2390 fly bites would be needed to t
