OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the treatment results of the application of nitric oxide (NO) in the form of topical glyceryl trinitrate (GTN) for the treatment of lateral epicondylitis (LE).
METHODS: The study included 40 patients with LE randomized into 2 equal groups. Selection criteria included the presence of pain, tenderness, and positive pain stimulating maneuvers. Glyceryl trinitrate patches were applied to the area of maximal tenderness once a day in the treatment group and placebo patches in the control group. Outcomes in terms of pain relief was assessed using the

As orthopaedic surgeons, we are besieged by myths that guide our treatment of lateral epicondylitis, or "tennis elbow." This extends from the term used to describe the condition to the nonoperative and operative treatments as well. The term epicondylitis suggests an inflammatory cause; however, in all but 1 publication examining pathologic specimens of patients operated on for this condition, no evidence of acute or chronic inflammation is found. Numerous nonoperative modalities have been described for the treatment of lateral tennis elbow. Most are lacking in sound scientific rationale. This

Optimization of treatment of the tennis player with an upper extremity overuse injury requires a thorough understanding and analysis of the biomechanical and physiologic stresses inherent in the game of tennis. Anatomic adaptations found in the upper extremity of elite tennis players provide the framework for evaluation and treatment of overuse injury through both an anatomically based total-arm strength program and efforts to normalize joint arthrokinematics. Integration of these key factors allows the clinician to rehabilitate the patient and design preventive conditioning programs in a scie

Muscle activity about the elbow during tennis strokes in nine professional and collegiate level players was studied using indwelling EMG and high speed photography. Eight muscles were evaluated for the serve, forehand, and backhand strokes. The serve was divided into six stages and the ground strokes into four stages. EMG tracings were subjected to analog-to-digital conversion and a relative measure of quantity was obtained. Analysis of variance and Turkey tests were then done to assess statistical significance (P less than 0.05). The ground strokes showed low activity in all muscles tested du

The records of 340 patients with a clinical diagnosis of tennis elbow were surveyed and the results of conservative treatment assessed. Of 157 patients successfully treated by local steroid injections, 92% achieved their good result after one or two injections. Repeated injections were not helpful. Simple lateral release of the common extensor origin was carried out on 42 elbows in 37 patients. Thirty-seven elbows in 32 patients were personally reviewed. Satisfactory pain relief was achieved in 33 elbows (89%). There were no significant complications.

Of the 1,213 clinical cases of lateral tennis elbow seen during the time period from December 19, 1971, to October 31, 1977, eighty-eight elbows in eighty-two patients had operative treatment. The lesion that was consistently identified at surgery was immature fibroblastic and vascular infiltration of the origin of the extensor carpi radialis brevis. A specific surgical technique was employed, including exposure of the extensor carpi radialis brevis, excision of the identified lesion, and repair. The results at follow-up were rated as excellent in sixty-six elbows, good in nine, fair in eleven

Tennis elbow defines a condition of varying degrees of pain or point tenderness on or near the lateral epicondyle. It is prevalent in individuals who perform a combination of forceful and repetitive activities including athletes and wheelchair users. The most common work-related disorder at the elbow is tennis elbow. Histopathological findings indicate that tennis elbow is a degenerative condition, called tendinosis, of the common extensor tendon, with the extensor carpi radialis brevis tendon more commonly implicated as the primary location of tendinosis. Despite the absence of inflammation,

INTRODUCTION: The main goal of the present umbrella review was to provide the most up-to- date and evidence-based results regarding the various treatment options for tennis elbow (TE), which hopefully will significantly decrease the confusions existing in the literature. Furthermore, our study differs from past analytical studies because, as to the best of the authors' knowledge, is the first to provide independent (not in comparison to other treatment) statistical results regarding the effectiveness of each TE treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Major medical databases such as PubMed, Scopus,

Lateral epicondylitis is a relatively common clinical problem, easily recognized on palpation of the lateral protuberance on the elbow. Despite the "itis" suffix, it is not an inflammatory process. Therapeutic approaches with topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids and anesthetics have limited benefit, as would be expected if inflammation is not involved. Other approaches have included provision of healing cytokines from blood products or stem cells, based on the recognition that this repetitive effort-derived disorder represents injury. Noting calcification/ossification

OBJECTIVE: To assess the reliability and compute the minimum detectable change using sonographic scales to quantify the extent of pathology and hyperaemia in the common extensor tendon in people with tennis elbow.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The lateral elbows of 19 people with tennis elbow were assessed sonographically twice, 1-2 weeks apart. Greyscale and power Doppler images were recorded for subsequent rating of abnormalities. Tendon thickening, hypoechogenicity, fibrillar disruption and calcification were each rated on four-point scales, and scores were summed to provide an overall rating of

INTRODUCTION: The results of operative management of tennis elbow are varied, and the indications for surgery are not well codified. Many operative techniques are reported, but a clear consensus on whether a given surgical procedure is more effective over another is yet to be reached.
METHODS: We conducted a MEDLINE, CINAHL and EMBASE search on all available scientific articles that reported the outcomes of surgery for lateral epicondylopathy. Keywords used were 'tennis elbow', 'lateral epicondylitis', 'lateral epicondylalgia', 'tendinopathy', 'tendonitis' and 'tendon'. Subheadings used were

BACKGROUND: Tennis elbow is a common disorder of upper extremity. It can be treated conservatively in majority of the patients but some resistant cases eventually need surgery.
MATERIAL & METHODS: This descriptive study was conducted at Department of Orthopaedics, Ayub Teaching Hospital, Abbottabad, from January 2002 to June 2006. Sixteen patients had surgical release of the extensor tendon origin along with excision of the lateral epicondyle ridge. These patients did not respond to conservative treatment i.e. rest, non- steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), local steroid injections and

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of lateral epicondylitis remains unclear. Our purpose was to study the anatomy of the lateral aspect of the elbow under static and dynamic conditions in order to identify bone-to-tendon and tendon-to-tendon contact or rubbing that might cause abrasion of the tissues.
METHODS: Eighty-five cadaveric elbows were examined to determine details related to the bone structure and musculotendinous origins. We identified the relative positions of the musculotendinous units and the underlying bone when the elbow was in different degrees of flexion. We also recorded the conta

Anatomical and clinical research has shown that the entire lateral epicondylar region is innervated only by radial nerve branches. Based on these investigations we have developed a surgical procedure for complete denervation which is indicated only in resistant cases of tennis elbow. Only one nerve pathway calls for careful exposure, otherwise denervation is accomplished blindly by disinsertion of certain muscles. The result of this procedure also depends on simultaneous indirect decompression of the posterior interosseous nerve. Excellent or good results were obtained in 90% on average. Resul

The authors favor conservative treatment of tennis elbow, starting with cessation of the offending activity and prescription of a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and followed by isometric and isotonic exercises when pain and inflammation have subsided. Two NSAIDs, diflunisal and naproxen, were evaluated in 38 patients with mild-to-moderate pain associated with tennis elbow. The physicians' assessments found no statistically significant differences between the two drugs; both provided effective reduction of pain and swelling. Patients' assessments of pain relief achieved with their

In patients with tennis elbow, the common extensor tendon showed a pronounced reactive change consisting of mesenchymal cell proliferation along with aggregates of newly formed vascular channels. When studied ultrastructurally, many of the mesenchymal cells adjacent to the vascular channels were surrounded by a basal lamina, which is not normally seen around tenocytes. The cytoplasm of these cells showed features of both endothelial cells and tenocytes. It thus appeared, that the endothelial cells of the newly formed vascular channels were the source of proliferating mesenchymal cells differen

BACKGROUND: When non-operative treatment of tennis elbow fails; a surgical procedure can be performed to improve the associated symptoms. Different surgical techniques for treatment of lateral epicondylitis are prescribed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of surgical treatment for tennis elbow based on small incision techniques.
METHODS: This technique was performed on 24 consecutive patients between June 2011 and July 2013. Outcomes were assessed using the Patient-Rated Tennis Elbow Evaluation (PRTEE), Nirschl's staging system and visual analog scale (VAS) for
