The Upregulation of Two CYP6 Genes Is Associated with the Response to Broflanilide in Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel, 1912) (Diptera: Tephritidae).

Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) is a globally significant quarantine pest, and broflanilide represents a new insecticide with potential for its management. However, the molecular responses of B. dorsalis to broflanilide, particularly the involvement of cytochrome P450 genes, remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we compared the midgut and fat body transcriptomes of adults that survived 24 h of exposure to the median lethal concentration (LC50) of broflanilide with those of corresponding controls. Candidate P450 genes were further examined by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), RNA inte

The thistle flies of the genus Chaetostomella (Diptera: Tephritidae: Terelliini) from Morocco, with a reference to European and Asian fauna.

The genus Chaetostomella Hendel, 1927 (Diptera: Tephritidae) in the fauna of Morocco is reviewed based on integrative morphological and molecular analyses. Phylogenetic reconstruction using a 657 COI barcoding sequences strongly supports the monophyly of the genus and resolves Chaetostomella steropea as the basalmost lineage, sister to the recently radiated Chaetostomella cylindrica species complex. Two species, Chaetostomella kitaneasp. nov. (reared from Cynara scolymus and Carthamus pectinatus), and Chaetostomellamaroccanasp. nov. (reared from Mantisalca salmantica and Ptilostemon rhiphaeus)

No single host is optimal: effects of fruit species on development and adult performance in Anastrepha fraterculus (Diptera: Tephritidae).

Many phytophagous insects develop within discrete and non-renewable resources, such as fruits, making host choice a critical determinant of offspring performance. In tephritid fruit flies, host fruit quality can strongly influence development, survival, and adult reproductive traits, yet no single host may optimize all life-history parameters. Here, we evaluated the effects of six host fruit species-native and exotic-on larval development and adult performance of the South American fruit fly Anastrepha fraterculus, a highly polyphagous and economically important pest. Under controlled laborato

Attractiveness and Sexual Competitiveness of Anastrepha obliqua Males (Diptera: Tephritidae) Fed on a Diet Enriched With Providencia rettgeri.

The West Indian fruit fly, Anastrepha obliqua (Macquart), is the second most important tephritid fruit fly in Mexico, infesting mango, hog plum and guava fruits. To control this pest, the Mexican government has implemented the use of the sterile insect technique (SIT), which involves the mass production, sterilization and release of flies. However, the A. obliqua laboratory males used in SIT are selected to a lesser extent by the wild females during competitiveness tests. The objective of this study was to compare the effects of males fed on fruit fly food enriched with Providencia rettgeri to

Differentiation of Parasitized and Non-parasitized Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann, 1830) (Diptera: Tephritidae) Pupae Based on Hyperspectral Reflectance Profiles.

Biological control programs for fruit flies rely on the mass rearing and release of parasitoids to suppress pest populations. The success of this strategy depends on effective quality control, including the assessment of parasitism and insect survival. Conventional methods, such as dissection, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), and adult emergence, are destructive, labor-intensive, and time-consuming. Hyperspectral imaging offers a rapid and non-destructive alternative for evaluating parasitism. Therefore, this study aimed to discriminate Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann, 1830) (Diptera: Tephri

Pathogenicity of Zygosaccharomyces bailii and Other Yeast Species to Mexican Fruit Fly (Diptera: Tephritidae) and Mass Rearing Implications.

Yeasts from all immature life stages of Mexican fruit fly Anastrepha ludens (Loew) (Diptera: Tephritidae) from diet, insectary air, and rearing materials were isolated, identified and evaluated for pathogenicity. Fifteen species of yeasts with one to genus level were identified from 72 yeast cultures obtained. Zygosaccharomyces bailii was the only yeast found to be highly pathogenic to Mexican fruit fly. Seventy-two hours post inoculation, the diet in bioassay cups with Z. bailii consistently showed signs of fermentation with gas bubbling causing the migration of larvae to the walls and lids o

Sexual selection in true fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae): transcriptome and experimental evidences for phytochemicals increasing male competitive ability.

In male tephritid fruit flies of the genus Bactrocera, feeding on secondary plant compounds (sensu lato male lures = methyl eugenol, raspberry ketone and zingerone) increases male mating success. Ingested male lures alter the male pheromonal blend, normally making it more attractive to females and this is considered the primary mechanism for the enhanced mating success. However, the male lures raspberry ketone and zingerone are known, across a diverse range of other organisms, to be involved in increasing energy metabolism. If this also occurs in Bactrocera, then this may represent an addition

Phenetic structure of two Bactrocera tau cryptic species (Diptera: Tephritidae) infesting Momordica cochinchinensis (Cucurbitaceae) in Thailand and Laos.

Morphometric variation with respect to wing venation patterns was explored for 777 specimens of the Bactrocera tau complex collected in Thailand (nine provinces) and Laos (one locality). Cryptic species B. tau A and C were identified based on their wing shape similarity to published reference images. In Thailand, the B. tau A species was identified in four provinces and the B. tau C species in seven provinces, and both species in one locality of Laos. The objective of the study was to explain the geographic variation of size and shape in two cryptic species collected from the same host (Momord

Ionizing radiation as a phytosanitary treatment against fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae): efficacy in naturally versus artificially infested fruit.

Some phytosanitary irradiation treatment research against tephritid fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) has used artificially infested fruit with the unstated and untested assumption that the method adequately simulated a natural situation. We compare grapefruit, Citrus paradisi Macfayden, naturally infested by Mexican fruit fly, Anastrepha ludens (Loew), via oviposition until larvae reached the late third instar versus insertion of diet-reared third instars into holes made in grapefruits 24 h before irradiation; the latter technique has been used in other studies. Olive fruit fly (Diptera: Tephritidae) ovipositional preference and larval performance in several commercially important olive varieties in California.

The olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae (Gmelin) (Diptera: Tephritidae),is an invasive pest of olives (Olea spp.) in the United States. The objectives of this study were to determine whether B. oleae exhibits ovipositional preference under California field conditions similar to that demonstrated in European populations and whether the resulting larvae fare better in preferred varieties. Female B. oleae exhibited strong ovipositional preference for certain varieties of the domesticated olive, Olea europaea L, and the resulting larvae performed better by some measures in preferred varieties than i

CRISPR/Cas9 Mediated Editing of Bdtektin1 Gene Induces Sterility in Male Oriental Fruit Fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Diptera: Tephritidae).

The Oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (B. dorsalis) is a highly invasive, widely distributed notorious pest restricting global fruit trade immensely. There are several approaches to managing this pest, still require newer approaches. In this regard, recently a novel approach called precision-guided sterile insect technique (pgSIT) is gaining momentum in inducing both female sex elimination or sex conversion and male sterility at one go. Developing a species-specific pgSIT system requires validation of targets such as sex determination and spermatogenesis genes. In this regard, B. dorsali

Rapid response of midgut bacteria in Bactrocera tau (Walker) (Diptera: Tephritidae) to lambda-cyhalothrin- and spinosad-induced stress.

In recent decades, the increasingly widespread application of chemical pesticides has exacerbated the emergence of insecticide resistance among insect pests. In this study, we examined the rapid response of bacteria in the midgut of the fruit fly Bactrocera tau (Walker) (Diptera: Tephritidae) to stress induced by the insecticides lambda-cyhalothrin and spinosad by analyzing the bacterial community structure and diversity in the midguts of 4-day-old B. tau. The results revealed that 4-day-old B. tau females were more resistant to lambda-cyhalothrin and spinosad than their 4-day-old male counter

A comparison of sexual competitiveness and demographic traits of Anastrepha obliqua (Macquart) (Diptera: Tephritidae) among fruit-associated populations.

The control of Anastrepha obliqua includes the sterilization of mass-reared insects grown in isolation in a constantly controlled environment. Through time, laboratory mass-reared colonies may produce flies with lower field performance. To recover the genetic variation and aptitude of mass-reared populations, wild insects are introduced into mass-reared colonies. Our aim in this study was to determine whether the host species from two localities influence the life history traits of A. obliqua. We collected flies as larvae from infested fruits of Spondias purpurea, S. mombin, Mangifera indica c

Spinosad Versus Spinetoram Effects on Kill and Oviposition of Rhagoletis indifferens (Diptera: Tephritidae) at Differing Fly Ages and Temperatures.

Western cherry fruit fly, Rhagoletis indifferens Curran (Diptera: Tephritidae), is a major quarantine pest of cherries (Prunus spp.) in western North America that is often managed using the organic insecticide spinosad, but there is a question of whether its semisynthetic relative spinetoram is more toxic and better to use for controlling the fly. Here, spinosad and spinetoram effects on R. indifferens kill and oviposition were determined by exposing 3-4, 7-10, or 14-18 d old flies to dry spinosad and spinetoram (0.21 or 0.33 mg active ingredient [a.i.] per dish) and untreated cherries or to i

Isolation and characterization of microsatellite markers from the olive fly, Bactrocera oleae, and their cross-species amplification in the Tephritidae family.

BACKGROUND: The Tephritidae family of insects includes the most important agricultural pests of fruits and vegetables, belonging mainly to four genera (Bactrocera, Ceratitis, Anastrepha and Rhagoletis). The olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae, is the major pest of the olive fruit. Currently, its control is based on chemical insecticides. Environmentally friendlier methods have been attempted in the past (Sterile Insect Technique), albeit with limited success. This was mainly attributed to the lack of knowledge on the insect's behaviour, ecology and genetic structure of natural populations. The d

Comparative Efficacy of Insecticides on Bactrocera tryoni and Zeugodacus cucumis (Diptera: Tephritidae) in Laboratory and Semifield Trials in Fruiting Vegetables.

In-field management of Bactrocera tryoni (Froggatt) and Zeugodacus cucumis (French) (Diptera: Tephritidae) in fruiting vegetable crops has relied almost exclusively on organophosphate cover sprays. Laboratory and semifield trials were performed to compare a number of alternative insecticides for efficacy against these species. A novel semifield method was used whereby the insecticides were applied to crops as cover sprays under field conditions, and treated plants bearing fruit were transferred to large cages and exposed to fruit flies. Efficacy was assessed in terms of numbers of pupae develo
