Naturally Occurring Terpenes: A Promising Class of Organic Molecules to Address Influenza Pandemics.

Since the olden times, infectious diseases have largely affected human existence. The newly emerged infections are excessively caused by viruses that are largely associated with mammal reservoirs. The casualties of these emergencies are significantly influenced by the way human beings interact with the reservoirs, especially the animal ones. In our review we will consider the evolutionary and the ecological scales of such infections and their consequences on the public health, with a focus on the pathogenic influenza A virus. The nutraceutical properties of fungal and plant terpene-like molecu

Lemon Terpenes Influence Behavior of the African Citrus Triozid Trioza erytreae (Hemiptera: Triozidae).

The African citrus triozid, Trioza erytreae Del Guercio (Hemiptera: Triozidae) is one of the primary vectors of the bacterium Candidatus Liberibacter spp. which causes citrus greening, a disease of global economic importance in citrus production. Despite its economic importance, little is known about its chemical ecology. Here, we used behavioral assays and chemical analysis to study the chemical basis of interaction between T. erytreae and one of its preferred host plants, Citrus jambhiri. In dual choice Y-tube olfactometer assays, lemon leaf odors attracted females but not males compared to

Terpenes and lipids of the endocannabinoid and transient-receptor-potential-channel biosignaling systems.

Endocananbnoid-system G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) and transient receptor potential (TRP) cation channels are critical components of cellular biosignaling networks. These plasma-membrane proteins are pleiotropic in their ability to interact with and engage structurally diverse ligands. The endocannabinoid and TRP signaling systems overlap in their recognition properties with respect to select naturally occurring plant-derived ligands that belong to the terpene and lipid chemical classes, the overlap establishing a physiological connectivity between these two ubiquitous cell-signaling sy

In vitro efficacy of isoflavonoids and terpenes against Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum and L. amazonensis.

The main form of control of leishmaniasis is the treatment, however various side effects and poor efficacy are associated with presently available drugs. The investigation of bioactive natural products for new antileishmanial drugs is a valid approach. The present study reports the in vitro efficacy of natural isoflavonoids and terpenes against Leishmania infantum and L. amazonensis and their cytotoxicity against HepG2 cells. L. infantum and L. amazonensis promastigotes were exposed to the terpenes kaurenoic acid, xylopic acid, and (-)-α-bisabolol and to the isoflavonoids (-)-duartin and (3R)-

Terpenes and terpenoids modulating TRPV channels in diabetes: role in fibrosis and inflammatory signaling.

Transient receptor potential vanilloid (TRPV) channels are non-selective cation channels that mediate thermosensation, nociception, osmotic balance, and metabolic regulation. In diabetes, altered TRPV channel expression and decreased calcium influx key pathways modulates, include NF-κB, AMPK, and TGF-β, promoting extracellular matrix accumulation and fibrotic remodelling. The limited availability of pathway specific interventions highlights TRPV channels as potential therapeutic target in diabetes. Recently, natural phytoconstituents have shown to exhibit TRPV channel modulating properties. St

Cycloparaffin-rich high density sustainable aviation fuel: pathways from terpenes, terpenoids, and plant oils.

Air transportation is essential for global trade, travel, and military aircraft. Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) derived from renewable biomass are vital to achieving net-zero carbon-emission goals. Cycloparaffins offer superior aviation fuel properties, such as high density and improved volumetric heat of combustion. Production of cycloparaffin-rich high-density SAF from cineole-based plant oils is a promising approach to produce 100% renewable aviation fuels after blending with synthetic paraffinic kerosene. This review provides an overview of aviation fuels, their key properties, and ASTM-

Structural parameters, molecular properties, and biological evaluation of some terpenes targeting Schistosoma mansoni parasite.

The use of natural products has a long tradition in medicine, and they have proven to be an important source of lead compounds in the development of new drugs. Among the natural compounds, terpenoids present broad-spectrum activity against infective agents such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoan and helminth parasites. In this study, we report a biological screening of 38 chemically characterized terpenes from different classes, which have a hydroxyl group connected by hydrophobic chain or an acceptor site, against the blood fluke Schistosoma mansoni, the parasite responsible for schistoso

Identification and Functional Characterization of UbiA-Type Terpene Synthases in Inonotus obliquus.

Inonotus obliquus (Chaga mushroom) is a medicinal basidiomycete rich in structurally diverse terpenoids, yet the biosynthetic enzymes responsible for sesquiterpene formation remain poorly understood. Here, we identified six UbiA-type terpene synthases (IoUbiA1-6) from the I. obliquus genome and functionally characterized them through heterologous expression in Aspergillus oryzae. GC-MS and NMR analyses demonstrated that IoUbiA1-4 catalyze the biosynthesis of bisabolane-type sesquiterpenes, including (+)-Z-α-bisabolene (1), (-)-β-curcumene (2), and (6R,7E)-α-bisabolene (3). Synergistic and additive terpene-THC interactions in cannabinoid CB1 and CB2 receptors.

Cannabis terpenes are widely recognized for shaping the plant's aromatic and sensory profiles. Yet, their pharmacological role in cannabis is less established. Recent work demonstrated that several cannabis terpenes can activate cannabinoid receptors type 1 and 2 (CB1R and CB2R) as low-efficacy agonists, raising the possibility that they may also modulate the activation at these receptors by Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), through orthosteric or allosteric mechanisms. Here, we systematically investigated the effects of individual terpenes and of terpene mixtures on THC-evoked activation at CB1R

Intranasal Terpene Treatment for Glioblastoma: the Neuro-Oncological Potential of Perillyl Alcohol.

Glioblastoma is the most aggressive and fatal primary brain tumor in adults, characterized by poor prognosis and limited treatment efficacy due to the impermeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and its treatment-resistant nature. This review aims to evaluate the potential of intranasal terpene treatment (ITT) as a novel and non-invasive strategy to bypass the BBB and improve glioblastoma treatment outcomes. A review of recent preclinical and clinical studies on intranasally administered compounds (especially terpenes such as Perillyl alcohol (POH)) is presented in terms of their molecular

Effect of Gamma Irradiation on Cannabinoid, Terpene, and Moisture Content of Cannabis Biomass.

In recent years, cannabis has been proposed and promoted not only as a medicine for the treatment of a variety of illnesses, but also as an industrial crop for different purposes. Being an agricultural product, cannabis inflorescences may be contaminated by environmental pathogens at high concentrations, which might cause health problems if not controlled. Therefore, limits have to be placed on the levels of aerobic bacteria as well as yeast and mold. To ensure the safety of cannabis plant material and related products, a remediation process has to be put in place. Gamma irradiation is a steri

Effects of terpenes in the treatment of visceral leishmaniasis: A systematic review of preclinical evidence.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a severe and potentially fatal neglected tropical disease, being considered a public health concern in many countries worldwide. There are still no vaccines against human VL, and the existing chemotherapy is often toxic. Thereby, alternative treatments have been investigated, and byproducts from plant metabolism have been a source of promising pharmacological compounds. Terpenes are secondary metabolites that exhibit a large spectrum of therapeutic activities. Herein, we conducted a systematic review to evaluate the effects of terpenes in the treatment of VL in r

Comparing terpenes from plant essential oils as pesticides for the poultry red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae).

Resistance to conventional synthetic pesticides has been widely reported in ticks, parasitic mites and other pests of veterinary and medical significance. New and novel approaches to manage these pests are therefore needed to ensure efficient control programmes that can be implemented now and in the future. Recent research in this area has focused on the pesticidal potential of plant essential oils. These products are attractive as pesticide candidates on the grounds of low mammalian toxicity, short environmental persistence and complex chemistries (limiting the development of pest resistance

Isolation and Characterization of Unusual Terpene Derivatives from the Fungus Echinodontium tinctorium.

The North American fungus Echinodontium tinctorium has not been explored for its small-molecule constituents for 60 years. Herein, we describe chemical investigation of its organic extracts and bioactivity-guided fractionation, which led to the isolation of two new diterpenoids, echinodin A (1) and B (2). Both 1 and 2 contain an unprecedented tetracyclic 5/3/7/5 carbon ring system with the highly constrained cyclopropane motif. Bis-(2,4-dihydroxy-6-methylphenyl) methane (4) was isolated for the first time in a natural source together with four other known compounds (3, 5-7). The structures of

Following the smell: terpene emission profiles through the cannabis life-cycle.

Cannabis cultivation and processing are emerging sources of air pollutants, particularly malodorous volatile organic compounds (VOCs), yet uncertainties remain regarding their emission rates and chemical composition. Emission rates are typically the starting point for an air quality assessment; not addressing their uncertainty and chemical profile may lead to under/over estimation of impacts. This study aims to quantify terpene emissions from indoor cannabis operations in the Lower Fraser Valley, BC, Canada a region already affected by odorous sources and peak ozone concentrations in the summe

Variation in Terpene Profiles of Thymus vulgaris in Water Deficit Stress Response.

Thyme (Thymus spp.) volatiles predominantly consisting of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, serve as antimicrobial, antiseptic and antioxidant in phytomedicine. They also play a key role in plants as secondary metabolites via their potential role against herbivores, attracting pollinators and abiotic stress tolerance. Plant volatiles are affected by different environmental factors including drought. Here, the effect of prolonged water deficit stress on volatile composition was studied on the sensitive and tolerant thyme plant cultivars (T. vulgaris Var. Wagner and T. vulgaris Var. Varico3, resp

A Genome-Wide Scenario of Terpene Pathways in Self-pollinated Artemisia annua.

Scenarios of genes to metabolites in Artemisia annua remain uninvestigated. Here, we report the use of an integrated approach combining metabolomics, transcriptomics, and gene function analyses to characterize gene-to-terpene and terpene pathway scenarios in a self-pollinating variety of this species. Eighty-eight metabolites including 22 sesquiterpenes (e.g., artemisinin), 26 monoterpenes, two triterpenes, one diterpene and 38 other non-polar metabolites were identified from 14 tissues. These metabolites were differentially produced by leaves and flowers at lower to higher positions. Sequence
