Predictors of word-level literacy amongst Grade 3 children in five diverse languages.

Groups of Grade 3 children were tested on measures of word-level literacy and undertook tasks that required the ability to associate sounds with letter sequences and that involved visual, auditory and phonological-processing skills. These groups came from different language backgrounds in which the language of instruction was Arabic, Chinese, English, Hungarian or Portuguese. Similar measures were used across the groups, with tests being adapted to be appropriate for the language of the children. Findings indicated that measures of decoding and phonological-processing skills were good predicto

Test-taking behaviors in a neurocognitive assessment: associations with school-age outcomes in a Finnish longitudinal follow-up.

Test-taking behaviors (i.e., task focus, maintenance of attention, and cooperation) affect children's cognitive test performance, and, thus, it is critical to take test-taking behavior into account when drawing conclusions and making recommendations. Prior studies have evaluated test-taking behaviors at the end of the assessment; the present study focused on the fluctuation of cooperation and attention during a neuropsychological assessment. We examined the attention and cooperation of 5-year-old children in a test-taking situation; the associations between these aspects of their test-taking b

Case study: using a virtual reality computer game to teach fire safety skills to children diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of a computer-based virtual reality (VR) game in teaching five children diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) fire safety skills and to generalize these skills to a real world simulation. METHOD: Children participated in a study by using a multiple baseline, multiple probe design. Before the game, no child could correctly describe what actions to take during a home fire. A computerized game allowed them to learn the recommended safety steps in a virtual world. Skill learning and real-world generalization were tested immediately after the interventi

Short-term equine interaction for reducing test anxiety and facilitating coping skill development in college students during examination periods: A preliminary study.

Mental health concerns are common among college students and more prevalent during examination periods when stress and anxiety are heightened. While the benefits of equine interaction have been reported, the impact of short-term equine interaction on coping skills valuable for managing test anxiety have yet to be studied. Therefore, the purpose of this preliminary study was to evaluate the impact of short-term equine interaction during the college examination period on development of coping skills and anxiety levels associated with testing, both self-reported and those reflected in physiologic

Examining the "reading the mind in the eyes test" as an assessment of subtle differences in affective theory of mind after concussion.

Objective: This research examined affective theory of mind (ToM) differences between university students with and without a history of concussion using the revised Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET). Although, previous studies have shown that affective ToM is subserved by the ventromedial prefrontal cortex - a region that is vulnerable in head injury - few have examined whether subtle deficits in affective ToM are evident after concussion. Given the RMET's sensitivity to affective deficits following moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury, the current study examined its validity follow

Colour-coded pellets increase the sensitivity of the staircase test to differentiate skilled forelimb performances of control and 6-hydroxydopamine lesioned rats.

The Montoya staircase test has previously been used to study the skilled forelimb performance of mice and rats following lesions and cell implants in different parts of the central nervous system. Here we describe a modification of the original test design which introduces differently coloured food pellets for each step, and present the results of the new and modified method. In this study unilaterally 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) lesioned rats and healthy control rats were used. The new evaluation of reaching and grasping movements takes into consideration the various levels of reaching difficu

Point of View: An evolution from genetic counselling to genomic counselling.

The highly specialist, hub and spoke model of Clinical Genetics, as described by the Royal College of Physicians in the UK in 1991, is under the spotlight. Whilst this has underpinned the successful delivery of genetics services historically, it may not be able to deliver genomic healthcare on its own, at scale, simply because genomic testing is no longer contained - any clinician can now order a genomic test, irrespective of their discipline. The professional group of genomic counsellors are now questioning whether there is need for an evolution of their roles. Do we persist in being attached

Sexual health issues in adolescents and young adults.

Adolescence is a time of sexual risk-taking and experimentation but also vulnerability. Young people may present to general physicians with systemic symptoms of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as arthritis, hepatitis or rash, but may not necessarily volunteer information about sexual activity. It is important for physicians to ask directly about sexual risks and if appropriate test for STIs and pregnancy. Knowing how to take a sexual history and consent a patient for an HIV test are core medical skills that all physicians should be trained to competently perform. Safeguarding youn

Bilateral cataracts as the presenting feature of type 1 diabetes in an 11-year-old girl.

Paediatric cataracts can present a diagnostic dilemma to ophthalmologists. Next-generation DNA sequencing (NGS) has been promoted as a tool to expedite the diagnosis of an underlying cause in such cases.1 The authors present an unusual case of bilateral cataracts in an 11-year-old girl as the first presenting feature of new type 1 diabetes mellitus. Prompt diagnosis and subsequent management of this potentially life-threatening condition were achieved through careful history taking and targeted biochemical testing. The authors feel this case highlights the significance of simple measures such

Neurological function, information-motivation-behavioral skills factors, and risk behaviors among HIV-positive alcohol users.

The purpose of this study was to examine neurological impairment in combination with information-motivation-behavioral skills (IMB) variables. The study tests the role of IMB variables as mediators of antecedent variables of demographics, life stress, social support, and neurological impairment with outcome measures of HIV preventive and risk behaviors in a sample of HIV-positive, alcohol-using adults (n = 250) with a history of alcohol abuse/dependence. Neurological impairment was measured with the Color Trails Test (CTT). Average performance on the CTT by the sample was substantially worse t

Simulation training in cesarean delivery.

Surgical training has always been an essential element of obstetrics. Skills acquisition for cesarean delivery relies heavily on apprenticeship-style training, with a notable paucity of formal simulation training before taking an active role in surgery. Patient safety is compromised when surgeons possess poor surgical skills and inadequate knowledge to handle acute emergencies. Experience comes with "real-world" exposure or can be obtained in a simulated setting, where scenarios can be practiced without the risk of patient harm. As part of a larger Intensive Course in Obstetric Emergencies, a
