Theileriosis is considered an economically important disease that may decrease productivity and cause a high mortality rate in livestock. Only a few studies have reported Theileria spp., such as T. sergenti and T. buffeli, in recent decades in Taiwan. In the present study, 401 ticks have been collected on Orchid Island in June 2022 and April 2023. Our environmental investigation for SFTSV unintentionally discovered T. luwenshuni in Haemaphysalis mageshimaensis on Orchid Island via PCR. The PCR products were sequenced, and the detected 18S rRNA gene sequences shared a 99.65-99.93% identity with

Bovine tropical theileriosis (BTT) is a tick-borne protozoan disease of cattle and responsible for major economic losses to the dairy farmers in India. This report describes diagnosis, genotyping and successful treatment of heavy infection of Theileria annulata in an organized dairy farm at Kattupakkam, Chennai. Four cross bred cows of 2 to 5 years of age showed clinical signs i.e., anorexia, salivation and panting. Clinical examination revealed pyrexia (40.0 °C to 40.1 °C), pale mucus membranes, enlarged prescapular lymph nodes and haemoglobinuria. The peripheral blood smear examination of in

PURPOSE: Equine piroplasmosis is a tick-borne protozoal disease affecting horses, mules, donkeys and zebras and can lead to severe economic losses in the equine industry. There is limited information on clinical pathologic changes of equine piroplasmosis in donkeys. This study aims to investigate the impacts of babesiosis on various hematological and biochemical properties in naturally infected donkeys with Theileria equi and Babesia caballi.
METHODS: A total of 200 apparently healthy donkeys were randomly examined for the presence of equine piroplasmosis in blood samples. Of 200 samples, 11(

Weather conditions can impact infectious disease transmission, causing mortalities in humans, wild and domestic animals. Although rainfall in dry tropical regions is highly variable over the year, rainfall is thought to play an important role in the transmission of tick-borne diseases. Whether variation in rainfall affects disease-induced mortalities, is, however, poorly understood. Here, we use long-term data on monthly rainfall and Boran cattle mortality (1998-2017) to investigate associations between within-year variation in rainfall and cattle mortalities due to East Coast fever (ECF), ana

Blood specimens were received from five cases in which young adult giraffe, from different geographic origins in South Africa, showed sudden onset of disease and subsequently died. Additional specimens from two translocated giraffe, as well as one specimen from a roan antelope, were also included in the study. Blood slides from some of these animals showed the presence of piroplasms. DNA was extracted; the V4 hypervariable region of the 18S rRNA gene amplified and analyzed using the Reverse Line Blot (RLB) hybridization assay. PCR products failed to hybridize with any of the Babesia or Theiler

Cells involved in innate and adapted immunity produce cytokines capable of orchestrating the immune response to Babesia and Theileria infections. Thus, CD4-postive T cells recognise peptide fragments of the parasites in the context of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II antigen and produce gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) to activate macrophages for enhanced phagocytosis and intracellular killing of the parasites. In addition, CD4-positive T cells produce interleukin 2 (IL-2) which is essential for the clonal expansion of CD8-positive T cells. The latter cells kill Theileria-infect

Theileria parva is the causative agent of three epidemiologically different diseases, East Coast fever (ECF), Corridor disease and January disease, caused by 3 types of T. parva, T. p. parva, T. p. lawrencei and T. p. bovis, respectively. The history of immunization against these diseases has been marked by salient discoveries such as the immune status in recovered animals, the activity of tetracyclines during the incubation period, the possibility for cryopreserving supernatant of prefed ticks and the development of useful serological tests. The possibility of simultaneous administration of s

A Theileria parasite was isolated from cattle on a ranch in Kenya where it caused mild theileriosis in approximately one third of the cattle exposed to natural tick challenge. The parasite was isolated by inoculation of blood into two experimental cattle. Blood from one of these cattle was used to infect two splenectomised cattle which developed high piroplasm parasitaemias and severe anaemia. A blood stabilate was prepared from one of the splenectomised cattle and produced high parasitaemias in splenectomised cattle. Immunofluorescence tests showed that the unidentified Theileria species was

In five experiments undertaken in splenectomised calves it was found that Theileria buffeli infections depressed the parasitaemias of superimposed Babesia bovis and Anaplasma centrale infections, but not B bigemina infections. The course of A centrale infections did not appear to be affected by a concurrent Eperythrozoon teganodes infection.

Theileria infection of Hyalomma ticks collected from three districts of Haryana was assessed in whole salivary glands by the methyl-green pyronin staining method. Of 1,662 ticks screened, 546 (32.8%) were found Theileria positive. Infection rate in 935 female ticks (36.9%) was more than that of 727 male ticks (27.6%). Density of Theileria infection (number of infected acini per infected tick) was also higher in female ticks. Theileria infection rate of ticks varied greatly in the three districts viz. only 12.0% in Rohtak, 25.8% in Hisar and 48.3% in Karnal. Per cent infection rate was high (63

Amblyomma cohaerens nymphs, which had been collected as engorged larvae from African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) in the Mara region of Kenya, transmitted a theilerial parasite to a steer. Macroschizonts were detected in the regional lymph node of this steer 12 days after tick application and were subsequently detected for 3 days at low levels of parasitosis. The macroschizonts were large and had numerous nuclei, being morphologically unlike any other theilerial schizonts described previously from cattle in Eastern and Southern Africa, but they resembled the macroschizont of T. barnetti Brocklesb

Two strains of nonpathogenic Theileriae, designated as Theileria sp. (Idobogo) and Theileria sp. (Mwanza), were isolated from cattle in southern and northern Tanzania respectively. They were similar to each other, producing low numbers of T. parva-like macroschizonts and of small piroplasms. Both were readily transmitted by Rhipicephalus appendiculatus. No serological relationship with T. mutans was found, while serum of some of the recovered animals gave fleeting, low titres in the indirect fluorescent antibody test to T. parva schizont antigen. Recovered animals were fully susceptible to T.

Theileria haneyi, a recently discovered tick-borne hemoparasite infecting equids globally, has significant implications for equine health. Although it is closely related to T. equi (sharing 23% genomic divergence), it establishes an asymptomatic carrier state in persistently infected horses, creating a silent transmission reservoir. Its discovery and unique genetics justify its classification as a new taxon. A critical diagnostic challenge is that the lack of the ema-1 gene in T. haneyi prevents its detection by the standard T. equi cELISA, emphasizing the need for species-specific tools. Alth

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne diseases represent one of the main challenges for livestock production in several countries and are directly related to significant economic losses in the livestock sector. These diseases compromise productivity and limit the full development of the activity, resulting in reduced growth rates, fertility problems, increased abortions, decreased meat and milk production, and increased herd mortality.
AIM: This study aimed to assess the epidemiological pattern of bovine theileriosis (BT) in Gaza province between 2016 and 2024.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study,

Theileria annulata and Theileria lestoquardi are deadly tick-borne parasites of cattle and sheep, respectively. These parasites are transmitted by Hyalomma ticks, and their geographical distributions partially overlap, with T. annulata having a wider range. Theileria lestoquardi infection is highly pathogenic in its natural sheep and goat hosts while T. annulata infection usually causes a mild disease in these species. Interestingly, T. annulata does not produce merozoites/piroplasms in sheep and goats, therefore it is not tick-transmissible. The aim of the current study was to understand the

Tropical theileriosis is an important protozoan tick-borne disease in cattle. Vaccination using attenuated schizont-infected cell lines is one of the methods used for controlling the disease. This study describes the production of attenuated schizont-infected cell lines from Egypt and an evaluation of its use as a vaccine to protect calves against clinical disease upon field challenge. Two groups of exotic and crossbred male calves were divided into vaccinated and control groups. The vaccinated groups were inoculated with 4 ml (1 × 106 cells/ml) of the attenuated cell line. Three weeks after v

Cases of Theileria-associated mortality are rarely reported in African wild artiodactyls. Descriptions of lesions are limited, particularly in endangered hippotraginids. Here, we analyzed retrospectively the gross and histologic findings in 55 roan antelope (Hippotragus equinus) with fatal natural theileriosis. The most frequently recorded gross findings in 40 cases were widespread petechiae and ecchymoses (72.5%), probable anemia (67.5%), icterus (60%), splenomegaly (60%), hepatomegaly (52.5%), and pulmonary edema (50%). Histologic lesions in 34 cases were characterized by multi-organ infiltr

Babesiosis and Theileriosis are tick-borne diseases widespread in tropical and sub-tropical regions with high economic impact worldwide. In Portugal there are at least 4 tick vectors known to be competent for the transmission of Babesia and Theileria sp. identified: Rhipicephalus bursa, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) annulatus, Ixodes ricinus and Haemaphysalis punctata. All these potential Babesia and Theileria tick vectors are widely distributed in Portugal, although they are predominant in the Southern region. In this study, 1104 cattle blood samples were randomly collected from Central and South
