Supportive Touch in Psychedelic Assisted Therapy.

In August 2024, The U.S. Food and Drug Administration rejected Lykos Therapeutics, Inc.'s new drug application for midomafetamine with psychological intervention (MDMA-AT) to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Among the many issues raised during review was concern about a highly publicized case of alleged sexual misconduct by an unlicensed therapist during a Phase 2 study of MDMA and the potential risk of future abuse. This incident of misconduct, along with several other publicized cases of misconduct by guides, facilitators, and shaman offering psychedelic retreats, has raised the

Research on therapeutic massage for cancer patients: potential biologic mechanisms.

There is preliminary evidence that therapeutic massage is a useful modality for the relief of a variety of symptoms and symptom-related distress affecting cancer patients. Mechanistic studies are necessary to delineate underlying biologic and psychological effects of massage and their relationship to outcomes. The current article discusses a model for using nuclear magnetic resonance techniques to capture dynamic in vivo responses to biomechanical changes induced in the soft tissues by massage. This model enables study of the communication of soft tissue changes to activity in the subcortical

Complementary therapies for chronic knee pain: A placebo-controlled RCT of Reiki and mindfulness.

CONTEXT: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a prevalent chronic pain condition that significantly impairs quality of life and is often treated with interventions that carry risks or provide limited relief. Reiki, a non-invasive complementary therapy, has shown early promise for pain management but lacks rigorous evaluation among American adults with KOA. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the specific efficacy of Reiki and mindfulness for adults with chronic KOA pain compared to sham and waitlist control conditions. METHODS: In this placebo-controlled randomized trial, 164 adults with physician-conf

The Fickle finger of quackery in otology: the saga of Curtis H. Muncie, Osteopath.

OBJECTIVE: Throughout history, false and outrageous cures for deafness have been abundant. Most of these false remedies were short lived and did not gain much attention. However, Curtis H. Muncie, a New York osteopathic physician, accrued vast wealth and fame over a half century career (1910-1960) with his proclaimed cure of deafness through reconstruction of the Eustachian tube with his index finger. Through creative marketing, clever manipulation of the press, and outrageous claims of efficacy, he profited handsomely from what was, no doubt, the most egregious and remunerative instance of de

Differences in tactile grid localization accuracy between people with back pain compared to individuals without pain.

OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to investigate the grid localization test (GLT) between patients with lower back pain and those without back pain. METHODS: Individuals receiving physical therapy were tested before treatment with a GLT to the low back. Testing was performed in the prone position. Participants were oriented to the 12-box, 50 mm grid squares, arranged in three rows and four columns, with a single touch in the center of each square, and provided with the corresponding number for that square. Twenty random touch points were then applied with a single touch in the center of the square,

Interventional procedures and physical therapies.

Placebo effects are inherent in all healthcare encounters and are underpinned by the therapeutic context. Every therapeutic context is rich in its ability to initiate and maintain placebo mechanisms, with the healthcare provider clinician interaction a crucial cornerstone. When one adds the powerful elements of touch, such as in physical therapies, and the technology and ritual associated with percutaneous or surgical interventions, robust placebo effects can be generated. However, the very elements of the therapeutic context and ritual that come with touch and intervention provide challenges.

The Power of a Parent's Touch: Evaluation of Reach and Impact of a Targeted Evidence-Based YouTube Video.

Despite strong evidence that skin-to-skin contact and breast-feeding are effective pain-relieving interventions for infants undergoing painful procedures, they remain underutilized in clinical practice. Given the important contribution of parents, there is a need to find innovative ways to assist parents to become actively involved in their infant's care. We developed a YouTube video to disseminate evidence-based information on the effectiveness of skin-to-skin contact and breast-feeding for infant pain management. The 2-minute 39-second video launched on December 2, 2014, and was promoted thr

Alternative therapies in the treatment or oral self-injurious behavior: a case report.

This paper presents the case of a child with severe mental retardation and a history of oral self-injurious behavior (SIB). While the behavior was refractory to a number of dental interventions, some success was achieved through a combination of behavioral therapy techniques and therapeutic touch (a relaxation technique). Etiologies of SIB are discussed, along with descriptions of alternatives to traditional dental therapy for this difficult problem.
