[A clinico-epidemiological study of opisthorchiasis in the Altai Territory].

Eighty-eight patients with opisthorchiasis were treated with biltricide in an anthropurgic and natural focus of opisthorchiasis in the Altai Territory. A one-day course of drug therapy, in a total dose of 60 mg/kg, was administered. Forty-two patients developed side effects in the course of therapy. Complete elimination of the helminths was achieved in 83 (94.3 +/- 2.3%; p less than 0.05) patients in 6 months after therapy.

Cestode regulation of inflammation and inflammatory diseases.

Helminth parasites are masters of immune regulation; a likely prerequisite for long-term survival by circumventing their hosts' attempt to eradicate them. From a translational perspective, knowledge of immune events as a response to infection with a helminth parasite could be used to reduce the intensity of unwanted inflammatory reactions. Substantial data have accumulated showing that inflammatory reactions that promote a variety of auto-inflammatory diseases are dampened as a consequence of infection with helminth parasites, via either the mobilization of an anti-worm spectrum of immune even

Essential Oils as Novel Anthelmintic Drug Candidates.

Helminths, with an estimated 1.5 billion annual global infections, are one of the major health challenges worldwide. The current strategy of the World Health Organization to prevent helminth infection includes increasing hygienic awareness, providing better sanitation and preventative anthelmintic drug therapy in vulnerable populations. Nowadays, anthelmintic drugs are used heavily in livestock, both in case of infection and as a preventative measure. However, this has led to the development of resistance against several of the most common drugs, such as levamisole, ivermectin and thiabendazol

Influence of Intestinal Helminth Burden on Clinical Manifestations, Therapeutic Response, and Leishmania braziliensis Load in Patients with New World Cutaneous Leishmaniasis.

Leishmania braziliensis is the most important cause of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in the Americas. A Th1-type immune response is required to control Leishmania infection, but an exaggerated inflammatory response leads to the development of ulcers seen in CL. Infection with intestinal helminths has the potential to inhibit the Th1 response in a manner that depends both on the species of helminth present as well as the burden of helminthiasis. We conducted a prospective cohort study of CL patients from an endemic area between January and December 2017 with either negative or high intestinal he

Modulation of intestinal epithelial permeability by chronic small intestinal helminth infections.

Increased permeability of the intestinal epithelial layer is linked to the pathogenesis and perpetuation of a wide range of intestinal and extra-intestinal diseases. Infecting humans with controlled doses of helminths, such as human hookworm (termed hookworm therapy), is proposed as a treatment for many of the same diseases. Helminths induce immunoregulatory changes in their host which could decrease epithelial permeability, which is highlighted as a potential mechanism through which helminths treat disease. Despite this, the influence of a chronic helminth infection on epithelial permeability

Helminth infection modulates systemic pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines implicated in type 2 diabetes mellitus pathogenesis.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of helminth infections exhibits an inverse association with the prevalence of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and helminths are postulated to mediate a protective effect against T2DM. However, the biological mechanism behind this effect is not known. AIMS/METHODS: We postulated that helminth infections act by modulating the pro-inflammatory cytokine and chemokine milieu that is characteristic of T2DM. To examine the association of cytokines and chemokines in helminth-diabetes co-morbidity, we measured the plasma levels of a panel of pro-inflammatory cytokines and c

Helminth infections: therapeutic potential in autoimmune disorders.

Knowledge of immunity enables us to predict that the reactions set in response to infection with helminth would prevent concomitant disease driven by an opposing spectrum of immune events. In another way, the immune response generated to combat the helminth infection could counteract the immunopathological reactions that drive autoimmune diseases. Rodent model systems recapitulate many aspects of human autoimmune diseases and have been enormously useful in defining mechanisms of immunopathology after infection. From this theoretical perspective, many researchers have proved that infection with

Malaria and Helminthic Co-Infection during Pregnancy in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Malaria and helminthic co-infection during pregnancy causes fetomaternal haemorrhage and foetal growth retardation. This study determined the pooled burden of pregnancy malaria and helminthic co-infection in sub-Saharan Africa. CINAHL, EMBASE, Google Scholar, Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science databases were used to retrieve data from the literature, without restricting language and publication year. The Joanna Briggs Institute's critical appraisal tool for prevalence studies was used for quality assessment. STATA Version 14.0 was used to conduct the meta-analysis. The I2 statistics and Egger'

Pulmonary Cystic Echinococcosis: Two Cases, Two Treatment Options.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonotic infection caused by the tapeworm of the genus Echinococcus, a cestode endemic in many parts of the world. CE can affect any organ, with the lung being the second most commonly affected organ after the liver. For the management of pulmonary CE, guidelines recommend surgical resection of cysts with adjuvant anti-helminthic therapy. In cases where surgery is not possible, medical therapy alone can be used. However, to date, there is a paucity of data to advocate for one modality over the other. Here, we report two cases of pulmonary CE caused by E. granulo

Cancer in disguise: a parasite within.

Cancer does not simply develop unchecked-it strategically exploits its host with parasitic precision. From immune evasion to tissue remodeling, cancer cells mirror the survival strategies of parasitic helminths. This resemblance suggests that malignant cells have co-opted deeply conserved, evolutionarily honed tactics used by parasites to persist within their hosts. By mimicking helminths, cancer cells may also engage type-2 immune responses, traditionally associated with anti-parasitic defense, as part of the host's attempt to control their expansion. Such parallels could also help explain wh

Acetic acid induced ulceration in rats is not affected by infection with Hymenolepis diminuta.

Analysis of rodent models of inflammatory bowel disease, airways hyper-reactivity, diabetes, and multiple sclerosis has shown that infection with helminth parasites can significantly reduce the severity of the disease. Here, we assessed whether rats infected with the tapeworm Hymenolepis diminuta were protected from gastric ulceration induced by the serosal application of acetic acid. All rats gavaged with infective cysticercoids harbored adult worms when assessed 6 wk later, and acetic acid evoked the expected gastric ulceration. However, infection with H. diminuta did not affect the degree o

Association of Intestinal Helminthiasis with Disseminated Leishmaniasis, Brazil.

Disseminated leishmaniasis is an emerging clinical form of Leishmania braziliensis infection. Evidence shows that co-infection by L. braziliensis and intestinal helminths does not affect clinical manifestations or response to therapy in cutaneous leishmaniasis patients. We evaluated whether co-infection was associated with those aspects in disseminated leishmaniasis patients in Brazil.

Eosinophilia, elevated immunoglobulin E level and chronic enteritis due to intestinal helminthiasis.

Recurrent urticaria, abdominal pain, peripheral eosinophilia, hyperimmunoglobulin E and small bowel abnormalities on roentgenograms prompted evaluation of a 36 year old man for intestinal parasitism. Evidence for helminthiasis as the cause of his symptoms included changing antibody titers to helminth antigens and a dramatic response to therapy. Helminth larvae or eggs were not recovered. Diagnosis of strongyloidiasis, the most likely cause of the illness, is discussed.

[Relevance of helminths in the prevention and healing of immune diseases].

The incidence of immune diseases has had a steady significant increase in the industrialized countries since the end of the last century. Epidemiological data suggest that prevention of exposure to helminths may be one of the factors promoting the rise in these diseases. Animal models of immune diseases support this concept by showing that these parasites can prevent and reverse developed diseases. Helminths strongly modulate the host's immune system inducing regulatory immune cells and pathways that afford protection from these illnesses. Helminthic therapy has emerged as a promising treatmen

Unusual presentations of a severe type 2 leprosy reaction mimicking sepsis induced by helminth infection.

We describe an unusual case of type 2 leprosy reaction (T2R) with septic shock-like features induced by helminth infection in a 31-year-old Moluccan male patient with a history of completed treatment of WHO multidrug therapy (MDT)-multibacillary (MB) regimen 2 years before admission. During the course of illness, the patient had numerous complications, including septic shock, anemia, and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Nevertheless, antibiotic therapies failed to give significant results, and the source of infection could not be identified. Helminth infection was subsequently rev

HIV-1 vaccine-specific responses induced by Listeria vector vaccines are maintained in mice subsequently infected with a model helminth parasite, Schistosoma mansoni.

In areas co-endemic for helminth parasites and HIV/AIDS, infants are often administered vaccines prior to infection with immune modulatory helminth parasites. Systemic Th2 biasing and immune suppression caused by helminth infection reduces cell-mediated responses to vaccines such as tetanus toxoid and BCG. Therefore, we asked if infection with helminthes post-vaccination, alters already established vaccine induced immune responses. In our model, mice are vaccinated against HIV-1 Gag using a Listeria vaccine vector (Lm-Gag) in a prime-boost manner, then infected with the human helminth parasite

Helminth antigen-based strategy to ameliorate inflammation in an experimental model of colitis.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is the most common and serious chronic inflammatory condition of the gut. Among the distinct T helper (Th) cell subsets, a Th1 type response is associated predominantly with Crohn's disease (CD) while helminth infections generate a strong Th2 type response. IBD is most prevalent in developed countries but rare in countries where infections with helminths are common. Thus, it has been hypothesized that infection with helminth infection influence the development of CD and recent clinical and experimental studies suggest strongly a beneficial role of helminth infe

IL-22+ CD4+ T cells are associated with therapeutic trichuris trichiura infection in an ulcerative colitis patient.

Ulcerative colitis, a type of inflammatory bowel disease, is less common in countries endemic for helminth infections, suggesting that helminth colonization may have the potential to regulate intestinal inflammation in inflammatory bowel diseases. Indeed, therapeutic effects of experimental helminth infection have been reported in both animal models and clinical trials. Here, we provide a comprehensive cellular and molecular portrait of dynamic changes in the intestinal mucosa of an individual who infected himself with Trichuris trichiura to treat his symptoms of ulcerative colitis. Long term follow-up of a patient with disseminated spinal hydatidosis.

A rare case of a 27-year-old male patient with disseminated sacral hydatidosis is presented. Because the diagnosis was missed initially, the patient underwent only partial resection of the tumour to obtain tissue for histology. The resection was followed by deep wound infection, and re-exploration had to be performed, thereby resecting the remaining cyst tissue and the S1-S3 vertebral bodies. Adjuvant anti-helminthic therapy was started postoperatively. Unfortunately, the hydatid cyst further progressed and could only be controlled with multiple decompression procedures and continuance of anti

Sex-the most underappreciated variable in research: insights from helminth-infected hosts.

The sex of a host affects the intensity, prevalence, and severity of helminth infection. In many cases, one sex has been found to be more susceptible than the other, with the prevalence and intensity of helminth infections being generally higher among male than female hosts; however, many exceptions exist. This observed sex bias in parasitism results primarily from ecological, behavioural, and physiological differences between males and females. Complex interactions between these influences modulate the risk of infection. Indeed, an interplay among sex hormones, sex chromosomes, the microbiome
