Breaking the Thermal Conductivity-Adhesion-Viscosity Trade-off in Thermally Conductive Adhesive via Hyperbranched Networks and Multi-Scale Fillers.

Thermally conductive adhesives are essential for thermal management in high-power optoelectronic systems, where they provide both efficient heat dissipation and strong mechanical bonding. However, achieving high thermal conductivity alongside strong adhesion and low viscosity remains a fundamental challenge due to conflicting material requirements. Herein, a molecularly engineered thermally conductive adhesive is reported that uniquely and simultaneously overcomes these trade-offs by integrating amino- and phenylboronic acid-functionalized hyperbranched polysiloxane into a polydimethylsiloxane

Preparation of Strong and Thermally Conductive, Spider Silk-Inspired, Soybean Protein-Based Adhesive for Thermally Conductive Wood-Based Composites.

The development of formaldehyde-free functional wood composite materials through the preparation of strong and multifunctional soybean protein adhesives to replace formaldehyde-based resins is an important research area. However, ensuring the bonding performance of soybean protein adhesive while simultaneously developing thermally conductive adhesive and its corresponding wood composites is challenging. Taking inspiration from the microphase separation structure of spider silk, boron nitride (BN) and soy protein isolate (SPI) were mixed by ball milling to obtain a BN@SPI matrix and combined wi

Electron-phonon interaction and lattice thermal conductivity from metals to 2D Dirac crystals: a review.

Electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling governs electrical resistivity, hot-carrier cooling, heat flow, and critically, thermal transport in solids. Recent first-principles calculations now predict e-ph-limited thermal conductivity fromd-band metals and wide-band-gap semiconductors to two-dimensional (2D) Dirac crystals without empirical parameters. In bulk metals,ab-initiolifetimes show that phonons, though secondary, still carry up to 40%of the heat once e-ph scattering is included. We next survey coupled Boltzmann frameworks, exemplified byelphbolt, that capture mutual drag and ultrafast non-equili

Bioconvection driven flow of magnetized micropolar hybrid nanofluid with Ohmic heating and variable thermal conductivity.

Bioconvection in hybrid nanofluid(HNF) flow arises from the collective, upward swimming of motile microorganisms (bacteria, algae, and fungi) suspended in a base fluid that also contains diverse types of nanoparticles. This phenomenon generates spontaneous, gravity-driven flow patterns such as plumes, cells, or vortices that significantly modify the fluid's thermal and mass transport characteristics. Understanding this process is vital for advancing applications in biomedical engineering, environmental science, and energy systems. In this study, the dynamics of bioconvective engine oil-based H

Turning Rattling Motions from Phonon Scatterers to Thermal Conductivity Enhancers in Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks.

Conventional rattling motions of guest species in porous materials suppress the thermal conductivity by scattering phonons. Here, we demonstrate a paradigm shift: rattling can be engineered into a thermal conductivity enhancer. Using molecular dynamics and phonon analysis of a hydrogen-bonded organic framework (TCF-1) loaded with xenon, we show that strengthening the host-guest interaction drives a transition from long-range diffusive (off-center) to localized (on-center) rattling. Reducing the guest mass in the on-center regime further intensifies localization. Both strategies boost thermal c

Development of micro-nanostructured film with antibacterial, anticorrosive and thermal conductivity properties on copper surface.

A micro-nano sharkskin like film (Cu-MNS-FA) was synthesized on copper surface through chemical etching followed by formate passivation, and its anticorrosive, antibacterial and thermal conductivity properties were investigated. Results show that after 7 d of exposure to nature, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Desulfovibrio vulgaris seawater, the charge transfer resistance of Cu-MNS-FA is more than three times higher than that of unmodified copper. In particular, in D. vulgaris seawater, the Rct value of modified copper is 7 times higher than that of unmodified copper after the same exposure durati

Unlocking efficiency: experimental and theoretical insights into biomass-derived carbon nanofluids with enhanced thermal conductivity.

The study presents an experimental investigation, supported by theoretical analysis, into the effects of nanoparticle (NPs) concentration, particle size, and shape on the thermal conductivity (TC) of carbon nanosphere (CNS)-based nanofluids (NF). CNS was synthesized from garlic peels (Allium sativum) via pyrolysis at varying temperatures and characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and other techniques. The NFs were prepared using a two-step method with different CNS concentrations in propylene gly

Cu3 BiS3 : Two-Dimensional Coordination Induces Out-of-Plane Phonon Scattering Enabling Ultralow Thermal Conductivity.

The discovery of compounds with low thermal conductivity and the understanding of their microscopic mechanisms are of great challenges and scientific significance. Herein, we report a unique ternary sulfide compound, Cu3 BiS3 , in which all Cu atoms are coordinated within a two-dimensional [CuS3 ] triangle plane. This local coordination leads to efficient out-of-plane phonon scattering and an ultralow thermal conductivity. Through DFT phonon spectrum calculations and analyses, we reveal that the lowest vibration frequency decreases from 2 THz for high-dimensional [CuS4 ] tetrahedral coordinate

Facile Preparation of a Novel HfC Aerogel with Low Thermal Conductivity and Excellent Mechanical Properties.

Aerogels emerge as captivating contenders within the realm of high-temperature thermal resistance and thermal insulation. Nevertheless, their practical applications are usually constrained by their inherent brittleness when subjected to rigorous conditions. Herein, employing hafnium dichloride oxide octahydrate (HfOCl2·8H2O) as the hafnium source and resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) as the carbon precursor, hafnium carbide (HfC) aerogels are fabricated via the sol-gel method complemented with carbothermal reduction reaction. Investigations are conducted into the effects of various molar ratios, du

Hidden Local Symmetry Breaking in Silver Diamondoid Compounds is Root Cause of Ultralow Thermal Conductivity.

Typically, conventional structure transitions occur from a low symmetry state to a higher symmetry state upon warming. In this work, an unexpected local symmetry breaking in the tetragonal diamondoid compound AgGaTe2 is reported, which, upon warming, evolves continuously from an undistorted ground state to a locally distorted state while retaining average crystallographic symmetry. This is a rare phenomenon previously referred to as emphanisis. This distorted state, caused by the weak sd3 orbital hybridization of tetrahedral Ag atoms, causes their displacement off the tetrahedron center and pr

Electroosmotic modulated unsteady squeezing flow with temperature-dependent thermal conductivity, electric and magnetic field effects.

Modern lubrication systems are increasingly deploying smart (functional) materials. These respond to various external stimuli including electrical and magnetic fields, acoustics, light etc. Motivated by such developments, in the present article unsteady electro-magnetohydrodynamics squeezing flow and heat transfer in a smart ionic viscous fluid intercalated between parallel plates with zeta potential effects is examined. The proposed mathematical model of problem is formulated as a system of partial differential equations (continuity, momenta and energy). Viscous dissipation and variable therm

Thermal conductivity of soils with heavy metals concentration from the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.

This paper presents the characteristic thermal and chemical properties of some surface soil samples from the oil-producing regions of Nigeria. A microprocessor-based thermal analyzer was used to determine the thermal conductivity while spectrophotometric procedure was employed to conduct the heavy metal concentration analysis. Thermal conductivity values were compared with heavy metal concentrations in each soil sample. The values of lead and cadmium and their respective measured thermal conductivities were highly correlated, with their correlation coefficients both greater than 0.900, while o

Thermal conductivity and optical phonon scattering of CMOS compatible aluminum nitride based ferroelectric thin films.

The emergence of ferroelectricity in doped aluminum nitride has positioned wurtzite nitrides as promising candidates for next-generation memory and logic devices. However, the structural modifications required to induce and stabilize ferroelectricity, including changes in bond strength, harmonicity, and crystal order, also affect phonon dynamics, creating competing pathways for polarization reversal and thermal transport. In this work, we report the contrasting roles of dopants in governing ferroelectric and thermal properties in Al1-xBxN and Al1-x-yBxScyN thin films where changes in compositi

KCuBi4S7: An Expanded Bi2S3 Structure Type with a Narrow Band Gap and Ultralow Thermal Conductivity.

The 6s2 lone pair of Bi3+ offers polyhedral flexibility that can be utilized in deriving new structure types with unique properties. Guided by this idea, we explored a K, Cu, and Bi/S-rich composition targeting a narrow band gap energy (Eg) and structural anisotropy. Through this strategy, we synthesized the new structure type of KCuBi4S7, which resembles the structure types of Bi2S3 and NaIn3S5, allowing us to generate the general formula Bi2S3(ABiS2)m(CuBiS2)n (A = Na, K). We observe that m and n precisely correspond to insertions of structural block fragments from KBiS2 (m → ∞) and CuBiS2 (

Disentangling Mass-Energy Coupling to Reveal the Intrinsic Lattice Thermal Conductivity of Superionic Cu2-xS.

Strong mass-energy coupling and associated Soret/Dufour effects impede an accurate determination of the lattice thermal conductivity (κL) in superionic Cu-S systems. To extract the phononic κL under zero net ionic current, we employ a convective-invariant Schur complement framework combined with cepstral analysis. We find that in Cu1.8S, the percolating vacancy network with confined segment dynamics guides and suppresses random hopping but promotes correlated directional diffusion, leading to lower Cu diffusivity than in Cu2S despite a higher vacancy concentration. This correlated motion induc

Nanostructuring Enables Greatly Suppressed Thermal Conductivity and Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance in Topological Insulator Thin Films.

Topological insulators (TIs) have attracted tremendous interest in the context of thermoelectrics (TE) as they are often composed of materials used for making effective and practical TE devices, while their exotic surface state electronic structures can be a promising candidate for decoupling thermal and electrical transport. However, common strategies used to improve TE performance such as using superlattices, heterostructures or alloying can often obscure the prominence of the unique properties of the topological surface states in TIs. Furthermore, obtaining a large enhancement in the TE per

Low Thermal Conductivity and Diffusivity at High Temperatures Using Stable High-Entropy Spinel Oxide Nanoparticles.

The realization of low thermal conductivity at high temperatures (0.11 W m-1 K-1 800 °C) in ambient air in a porous solid thermal insulation material, using stable packed nanoparticles of high-entropy spinel oxide with 8 cations (HESO-8 NPs) with a relatively high packing density of ≈50%, is reported. The high-density HESO-8 NP pellets possess around 1000-fold lower thermal diffusivity than that of air, resulting in much slower heat propagation when subjected to a transient heat flux. The low thermal conductivity and diffusivity are realized by suppressing all three modes of heat transfer, nam

A Tunable Structural Family with Ultralow Thermal Conductivity: Copper-Deficient Cu1-x□xPb1-xBi1+xS3.

Understanding the mechanism that connects heat transport with crystal structures and order/disorder phenomena is crucial to develop materials with ultralow thermal conductivity (κ), for thermoelectric and thermal barrier applications, and requires the study of highly pure materials. We synthesized the n-type sulfide CuPbBi5S9 with an ultralow κ value of 0.6-0.4 W m-1 K-1 in the temperature range 300-700 K. In contrast to prior studies, we show that this synthetic sulfide does not exhibit the ordered gladite mineral structure but instead forms a copper-deficient disordered aikinite structure wi

Theoretical determination of anisotropic thermal conductivity for initially defect-free and defective TATB single crystals.

The anisotropic thermal conductivity was determined for initially defect-free and defective crystals of 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB), a material that exhibits a graphitic-like packing structure with stacked single-molecule-thick layers, using the reverse non-equilibrium molecular dynamics method and an established TATB molecular dynamics force field. Thermal conduction in TATB is predicted to be substantially higher and more anisotropic than in other related organic molecular explosives, with conduction along directions nominally in the plane of the molecular layers at least 68%
