Modulating the subthalamic nucleus (STN) through neural circuits can suppress abnormal discharge rhythms in the primary motor cortex (M1) in Parkinson's disease (PD), thereby enhancing motor function. However, a clinically viable noninvasive deep brain stimulation method for PD has yet to be realized. We developed a noninvasive transcranial magnetic-acoustic coupling stimulation (TMAS) system, employing a theta burst stimulation (TBS) mode, to examine its effects of simulated electrical parameters on cortical rhythms in PD. The theta burst-TMAS (TBTMAS) system was established, and its physical

While some aspects of social processing are shared between humans and other species, some aspects are not. The former seems to apply to merely tracking another's visual perspective in the world (i.e., what a conspecific can or cannot perceive), while the latter applies to perspective taking in form of mentally "embodying" another's viewpoint. Our previous behavioural research had indicated that only perspective taking, but not tracking, relies on simulating a body schema rotation into another's viewpoint. In the current study we employed Magnetoencephalography (MEG) and revealed that this mech

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common progressive neurodegenerative disease for which there is no cure. Recent studies have shown a close link between type 2 diabetes and AD, which suggested that drugs for type 2 diabetes may be effective for AD. GLP-1 and GIP are incretin hormones that can ameliorate diabetes.
METHODS: In the present study, we tested the novel dual GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist DA5-CH in the icv. streptozotocin (STZ)-induced insulin desensitization model of AD in rats to explore the protective effects of DA5-CH.
RESULTS: The results show that DA5-CH could r

BACKGROUND: Amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS), primarily methamphetamine, are currently the most frequently abused illicit drugs in China, causing profound neurotoxicity and cognitive impairment, particularly in women. While exercise-based rehabilitation such as Tai Chi has shown benefits for sleep, mood, and executive function, its specific neurophysiological mechanisms in addiction recovery remain unclear.
METHODS: Thirty-two female individuals with ATS dependence from a compulsory rehabilitation center were randomly assigned to a Tai Chi group (n=16) or a matched-intensity control group (r

The medial septum and diagonal band complex (MS-DB) is believed to play a key role in generating theta oscillations in the hippocampus, a phenomenon critical for learning and memory. Although the importance of the MS-DB in hippocampal theta rhythm generation is generally accepted, it remains to be determined whether the MS-DB alone can generate hippocampal oscillations or is only a transducer of rhythmic activity from other brain areas. Secondly, it is known that hippocampal theta rhythm can be separated into an atropine-sensitive and insensitive component. However, it remains to be establishe

CONTEXT: Emotion regulation is a set of processes responsible for controlling, evaluating and adjusting reactions to achieve a goal. Results derived from magnetic resonance imaging agreed on the involvement of frontal and limbic structures in this process. Findings using cognition and physiology interactions are still scarce but suggest a role of alpha rhythm in emotional induction and for theta in regulation.
OBJECTIVES AND HYPOTHESES: Our goal was to investigate alpha and theta rhythm during the reappraisal of aversive stimuli. We hypothesized that an implication of alpha rhythm in emotiona

The abnormal theta-rhythm of the EEG can be identified by use of spectral analysis. The rhythms appear as peaks in the power spectrum and can be considered as given, if the intensity of this peak is significantly higher than the average intensity and if a left-right coherence is present. Abnormal theta-rhythms in the parietal region are significantly more frequent in children with a histroy of febrile convulsions than in controls. This difference becomes especially obvious in the records with open eyes. According to previous investigations, the abnormal theta-rhythm is correlated with a geneti

Paradoxical sleep (PS) in the rat, cat and mouse is preceded and sometimes followed by a short-lasting intermediate stage (IS) characterized by high amplitude cortical spindles and low frequency theta rhythm. This stage, which is mimicked by an intercollicular transection, is massively extended at the expense of PS by low doses of barbiturates. Since the pontine cholinergic cell activation of PS is suppressed by barbiturates, we studied whether atropine, an antimuscarinic compound, extends IS at the expense of PS. Atropine sulfate was given at 5, 10 and 20 mg/kg IP. All doses increased dose de

Individual neurons in the medial septum and diagonal band fire in phase with, and appear to act as a 'pacemaker' of, the hippocampal theta rhythm. We investigated the relationships of periodic EEG both among various parts of the septum and with dorsal hippocampal theta recorded concurrently in freely moving rats. Most septal sites showed theta rhythm concurrent with hippocampal theta during locomotion. However, periods with theta at hippocampal but not septal sites were more frequent than the reverse. Theta waves in different parts of the septum were synchronized with each other but medial sep

Proceedings from the analysis of known experimental data on theta-rhythm (fusiform activity) a determinate model of its generator is proposed. It is based on the mechanism of beats frequencies. The model consists of 2 united identical moduli generating harmonic (rhythmical) oscillations alpha-rhythms of approximating frequencies v1 and v2 = v1 + delta v. The working regime of the generator is determined by the trigger pulse frequency. The proposed quantitative relationships between theta-rhythm parameters--T, n and frequencies of constituent oscillations v and delta v are checked up by analysi

Theta oscillations (4-12 Hz) are thought to provide a common temporal reference for the exchange of information among distant brain networks. On the other hand, faster gamma-frequency oscillations (30-160 Hz) nested within theta cycles are believed to underlie local information processing. Whether oscillatory coupling between global and local oscillations, as showcased by theta-gamma coupling, is a general coding mechanism remains unknown. Here, we investigated two different patterns of oscillatory network activity, theta and respiration-induced network rhythms, in four brain regions of freely

Theta oscillations are implicated in regulating information flow within cortico-hippocampal networks to support memory and cognition. However, causal evidence tying theta oscillations to network communication in humans is lacking. Here we report experimental findings using a closed-loop, phase-locking algorithm to apply direct electrical stimulation to neocortical nodes of the hippocampal network precisely timed to ongoing hippocampal theta rhythms in human neurosurgical patients. We show that repetitive stimulation of lateral temporal cortex synchronized to hippocampal theta increases hippoca

Theta rhythm recorded as an extracellular synchronous field potential is generated in a number of brain sites including the hippocampus. The physiological occurrence of hippocampal theta rhythm is associated with the activation of a number of structures forming the ascending brainstem-hippocampal synchronizing pathway. Experimental evidence indicates that the supramammillary nucleus and posterior hypothalamic nuclei, considered as the posterior hypothalamic area, comprise a critical node of this ascending pathway. The posterior hypothalamic area plays an important role in movement control, pla

Power and topographic distribution of the EEG rhythms (delta, theta 1, theta 2, alpha, beta 1, and beta 2) were compared with the reactive and personal anxiety levels (by Spilberger) and parameters of subjective emotional semantic space (obtained by the method of subjective scaling). A general decrease in the EEG power was observed in reactive depression, with the exception of the theta-rhythm, the power of which was higher than that in healthy persons. The increase in the theta 2 power in depression was correlated with activation of the right frontal area ("the zone of negative emotions"), an

Genetically determined EEG patterns being found during a longterm follow-up of children with febrile convulsions are subjected to a multivariate statistical analysis. The study is mainly concerned with the examination of interrelationships between spikes and waves, theta-rhythms, and photosensitivity. The three patterns form two-categorial variables (occurrence yes, no) and enter a three-way contingency table. Associations between the variables are examined by fitting a log-linear model to the data. Three effects in the structure of the contingency table are statistically significant: the main

Sevoflurane can induce memory impairment during clinical anesthesia; however, the underlying mechanisms are largely unknown. TASK-3 channels are one of the potential targets of sevoflurane. Accumulating evidence supports a negative role of intracranial theta rhythms (4-12 Hz) in memory formation. Here, we investigated whether TASK-3 channels contribute to sevoflurane-induced memory impairment by regulating hippocampal theta rhythms. In this study, the memory performance of mice was tested by contextual fear conditioning and inhibitory avoidance experiments. The hippocampal local field potentia

Theta oscillations (4-12 Hz) are a prominent network rhythm within hippocampal and parahippocampal structures. Driven by cholinergic and γ-aminobutyric acidergic inputs originating from the medial septum, physiological theta gates network excitability to control spatial navigation, memory encoding, and sensorimotor integration during specific behavioral states. Theta rhythm also organizes the precise temporal binding of interneuron and principal cell firing via phase-locking, a mechanism critical for synaptic plasticity and long-term potentiation. Emerging evidence indicates that theta activit

The effect of sleep on memory consolidation depends on the precise interaction of slow oscillations (SOs), theta bursts, and spindles. Disruption in coupling of these sleep rhythms has been reported for individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, it is unknown how the sleep rhythms evolve during AD progression and whether disrupted sleep rhythms facilitate cognitive decline in AD. Here, we analyze data of 93 individuals from sleep electroencephalography (EEG), MRI, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) AD biomarkers, and two-year cognitive assessments among three populations: AD dementia (n = 33),

Transcranial magneto-acoustic-electrical stimulation is a new non-invasive neuromodulation technology, in which the induced electric field generated by the coupling effect of ultrasound and static magnetic field are used to regulate the neural rhythm oscillation activity in the corresponding brain region. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of transcranial magneto-acoustic-electrical stimulation on the information transfer and communication in neuronal clusters during memory. In the experiment, twenty healthy adult Wistar rats were randomly divided into a control group (fiv

Some of the unusual patterns that can be encountered on the EEG are described briefly. The patterns are grouped according to the predominant frequencies involved and/or by distinctive morphology or distribution. Those involving predominantly the alpha frequency range are alpha squeak, retained alpha, alpha-delta sleep, unilateral decrease in reactivity of alpha activity, and extreme spindles. The patterns involving the beta frequency range are the fast alpha variant, posterior temporal fast activity in children, the fast spiky spindle variant, central fast activity, and diffuse paroxysmal or c
