BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Antimicrobial resistant strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae have spread with remarkable rapidity in many African countries. Chromosomal resistance to penicillin, tetracycline, and thiamphenicol is frequent now, and reported prevalences of penicillinase-producing N. gonorrhoeae isolates vary between 15% and 80%. A reversed-HPLC method was established to determinate penicillins in whole blood. Thiamphenicol as internal standard was added to 0.5 ml blood. Proteins in blood were precipitated with acetonitrile, then the separate supernatant was directly injected onto the chromatography column. The range of five penicillins' linearities was 0.9918 to 0.9996, their range of relative recovery was 91.75% to 107.33%, their CV was 3.56% to 9.85%. Thiamphenicol and florfenicol are two phenicol antibiotics commonly used in aquaculture. Photodegradation experiments on these phenicols were performed in aqueous solutions under irradiation of different light sources. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility and the auxotype/serovar distribution of Neisseria gonorrhoeae in Kigali, Rwanda, during 1985-93.
METHODS: As part of a monitoring programme the in vitro susceptibility of 1604 isolates of N gonorrhoeae was determined by agar dilution. Auxo- and serotyping was performed on 1350 and 1313 isolates respectively.

Antibiotic susceptibilities were determined for 122 Neisseria gonorrheae isolates obtained from 400 sex workers in Jakarta, Indonesia, and susceptibilities to ciprofloxacin, cefuroxime, cefoxitin, cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, chloramphenicol, and spectinomycin were found.
