[Role of transthoracic biopsy in the modern diagnosis of tumors of organs in the thoracic cavity].

This review summarizes data of publications and meta-analyses devoted ton the use of transthoracic biopsy. It is showed that the method continues to be one of the main ways to diagnose pathological processes in the thoracic cavity's organs, especially tumors of the lungs, pleura, mediastinum and chest wall. Modern methods of navigation trepan-needles can receive sufficient volume of pathological tissue samples for subsequent full morphological study to individualize and optimize treatment algorithms.

[The topography of the organs of the thoracic cavity of the hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius Linné 1758)].

With the aid of a juvenile Hippopotamus amphibius (L. 1758), the thorax and its organs has been examined under the macroscopic anatomic aspect. The description of the topography was the main subject. The present findings have been compared with the situation found in related domesticated mammalians (pig, ruminants). Several significant differences from those and similarities to other species were noticed. The appearance of the lung does not agree with the one of the severe divided lung in pigs and ruminants. It is more similar to the lung in horses as well as the thymus which here only consist

A girl with a giant fibrolipoma in her thoracic cavity: a rare case report.

BACKGROUND: Fibrolipoma is an uncommon subtype of lipoma. On the basis of the results of a survey of the PubMed database, only approximately a dozen cases in children have been described in which the histological diagnosis of fibrolipoma has been confirmed. In children, fibrolipomas have been reported in the eyelids, ears, lips, nasopharynx, mouth, and other locations but not in the thoracic cavity. We present the case of a 15-year-old girl with a giant fibrolipoma in the left side of her thoracic cavity. CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old Chinese girl presented with chest tightness and exercis

Cervical and retrosternal approach to the left thoracic cavity using a flexible endoscope.

OBJECTIVES: Mediastinoscopy remains the gold standard for surgical exploration of the mediastinum. The use of this approach to access the left thoracic cavity could be complicated by vascular or neurological lesion. The aim of this experimental work was to describe a new approach to the left thoracic cavity through a cervical incision and retrosternal space using a flexible endoscope as a unique instrument. METHODS: We conducted an experimental work on 12 refrigerated and non-embalmed cadavers. Through a cervical incision, we dissected the retrosternal space to the level of Louis angle and th

A case of ruptured descending thoracic aortic aneurysm into the right pleural cavity: importance of preoperative drainage of the right pleural cavity.

We present an unusual case of a ruptured descending thoracic aortic aneurysm into the right pleural cavity of a patient with pectus carinatum. The presence of pectus carinatum played an important role in the development of the aneurysm at the atypical site and the rupture into the right pleural cavity. A small amount of right pleural bleeding on admission can increase and develop to massive hemothorax until emergency operation. Massive bleeding in the right pleural cavity where the dependent lung is located causes atelectasis and increased shunt fraction under one lung ventilation. Therefore,

Thoracic cavity irrigation prevents retained hemothorax and decreases surgical intervention in trauma patients.

INTRODUCTION: Retained hemothorax (HTX) is a common complication following thoracic trauma. Small studies demonstrate the benefit of thoracic cavity irrigation at the time of tube thoracostomy (TT) for the prevention of retained HTX. We sought to assess the effectiveness of chest irrigation in preventing retained HTX leading to a secondary surgical intervention. METHODS: We performed a single-center retrospective study from 2017 to 2021 at a Level I trauma center, comparing bedside thoracic cavity irrigation via TT versus no irrigation. Using the trauma registry, patients with traumatic HTX w

Divergent management strategies for typical versus atypical carcinoid tumors of the thoracic cavity.

OBJECTIVES: At our institution, limited surgical techniques are reserved only for suspected typical carcinoids, and nodal dissection and multimodality therapy are frequently used for atypical carcinoids. We describe the results of these differing management strategies based on initial clinicopathologic characteristics. METHODS: Retrospective review of patients treated for thoracic carcinoid from 1995 to 2009. Information was abstracted concerning surgical and nonsurgical treatments, pathology results, and outcomes. Event-free and survival endpoints were compared. RESULTS: The median follow-u

Thoracic cavity segmentation algorithm using multiorgan extraction and surface fitting in volumetric CT.

PURPOSE: To develop and validate a semiautomatic segmentation method for thoracic cavity volumetry and mediastinum fat quantification of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. METHODS: The thoracic cavity region was separated by segmenting multiorgans, namely, the rib, lung, heart, and diaphragm. To encompass various lung disease-induced variations, the inner thoracic wall and diaphragm were modeled by using a three-dimensional surface-fitting method. To improve the accuracy of the diaphragm surface model, the heart and its surrounding tissue were segmented by a two-stage level

Primary ectopic meningioma in the thoracic cavity: A rare case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Meningioma is a common type of intracranial tumor in adults. It rarely arises in the chest, with only a few case reports in the English literature. Here, we report the case of a patient with a primary ectopic meningioma (PEM) located in the thoracic cavity. CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old woman presented with exercise-induced asthma, chest tightness, intermittent dry cough and fatigue for several months. Computed tomography revealed the presence of a huge mass in the thoracic cavity, with no connection to the spinal canal. Lung cancer and mesothelioma were suspected, and surgery

Thoracic cavity-to-cage ratio is a predictor of technical difficulties in minimally invasive esophagectomy.

BACKGROUND: Technical difficulties are occasionally encountered when performing conventional minimally invasive esophagectomy and robot-assisted minimally invasive esophagectomy in patients with a narrow thoracic cavity. Thoracic cavity-to-cage ratio is an indicator of thoracic cavity length. We hypothesized that the thoracic cavity-to-cage ratio could be a predictor of technical difficulties in conventional minimally invasive esophagectomy and robot-assisted minimally invasive esophagectomy. METHODS: We evaluated 340 patients who underwent minimally invasive esophagectomy for esophageal squa

Resectability, Recurrence, and Risk Stratification of Giant Solitary Fibrous Tumors in the Thoracic Cavity.

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare mesenchymal tumors most commonly arising from the pleura in the thoracic cavity. The impact of tumor size on risk of recurrence in thoracic SFTs is not well understood. METHODS: A single institution review was performed on all resected thoracic SFTs (1992-2019) with giant SFT defined as ≥ 15 cm. Clinical information, pathologic characteristics, and long-term survival data were collected, and predictors of recurrence and survival were evaluated with regression and Kaplan-Meier analysis. RESULTS: There were 38 thoracic SFTs resected from pati

[A case of chronic progressive radiation myelopathy with cavity formation in the thoracic spinal cord].

A 70-year-old man was admitted to our hospital in March 1994 because of subacute progressive paraparesis and sensory impairment below the level of the second thoracic (TH 2) spinal cord on the right side. He had received radiation therapy (48 Gy) on his neck and mediastinum eight years previously due to adenocarcinoma of the right upper lung. Blood chemistry, CT of the spine, bone and gallium scintigraphy were unremarkable. In magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the thoracic cord, the gadolinium (Gd)-enhanced T1-weighted image showed abnormal signal intensities from Th 3 to Th 4 of the spine.
