Background: Esophageal atresia (EA) is a rare congenital malformation of the esophagus. Surgical treatment is required to restore the continuity of the esophagus. This can be performed through thoracotomy. However, an increasing number of hospitals is performing minimal invasive surgery (MIS). In this article, we describe the technique of thoracoscopic repair of EA in neonates in more detail and show the outcome of a patient cohort operated by young pediatric surgeons in training. Methods: Between 2014 and 2019 correction was performed in 64 EA type C patients at the UMC Utrecht, Wilhelmina Ch

We report on an 81-year-old male patient in whom chest computed tomography during follow-up for extramammary Paget's disease revealed a nodule in the right thoracic cavity. Because he had been taking methotrexate for rheumatoid arthritis, the possibility of methotrexate-associated lymphoproliferative lung disease was considered and methotrexate was discontinued as a precaution. No calcification was found inside the nodule, and there was no change in its size or position for 6 months. The patient had a history of malignant tumor, so thoracoscopic surgery was performed for diagnostic purposes. A

AIM: Symptomatic tracheobronchomalacia can be fatal. Successful treatment includes aortopexy. We report outcomes of the thoracoscopic approach in a single centre.
METHODS: All patients undergoing thoracoscopic aortopexies from 2009 to 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. Data was reported as median (interquartile range). Risk factors for subsequent tracheostomy were analyzed with logistics regression model, p < 0.05 as significant.
RESULTS: Twenty-one patients with mid to distal tracheomalacia (n = 17) and bronchial involvement (n = 4) were determined on bronchoscopy, tracheobronchogram, or C

BACKGROUND: Thoracoscopic surgery has been widely performed. However, sometimes open conversion becomes necessary to manage complications. We have been applying thoracoscopic technique to manage complications to minimize the rate of open conversion.
METHODS: Thoracoscopic suture technique in addition to some other technique has been used to control intraoperative bleeding, nerve injury and bronchial damage. Pulmonary artery bleeding could happen in thoracoscopic surgery. First step is to give compression to the bleeding point. Usually the lung nearby is used then a gauze is taken over. A piec

Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) bronchoplasty is an advanced VATS technique requiring experience in endoscopic sewing, tying and suturing techniques reserved for cancers arising from central airways. There are three main types of bronchoplasty depending on the extent of cancer involvement of the bronchus. In this paper the author describes his experience with different types of bronchoplasty with case and video illustrations.

INTRODUCTION: Minimally invasive surgery is the treatment of choice in early-stage lung cancer. However, experience in infectious lung disease, primarily bronchiectasis, is limited probably because of the presence of dense pleural adhesions, multiple lymph nodes, and spiral bronchial arteries. The present study shows our experience of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) lobectomy and segmentectomy in the treatment of bronchiectasis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who underwent VATS lobectomy or segmentectomy in our clinic between April 2008 and 2015 were retrospectively evaluated. Su

BACKGROUND: Robotic systems have been used to enhance the surgeon's dexterity and visualization in endoscopic surgery and thus facilitate refined dissection, suturing, and knot tying. We describe use of the da Vinci surgical system for robotic-assisted thoracoscopic bronchoplasty in patient with centrally located lung cancer.
METHODS: We used three robotic ports (a 12-mm trocar for the 30°-down camera and two 8-mm trocars for the robotic instrument arms) and one utility incision for assistance and specimen retrieval. Lung isolation were achieved using double-lumen endotracheal tube without ca

The spectrum of pulmonary surgical pathology in newborns and infants is mainly presented by congenital diseases. Surgery is the main radical method of treatment of children with congenital lung diseases. By this time in the N.F.Filatov City Children's Hospital No13 it is performed more than 1000 endoscopic operations on the thoracic cavity including more than 300 lung resections. More than 190 cases were caused by congenital lung disease. The results of treatment of 194 infants with congenital lung disease for the period 2005-2014 are analyzed in this article. 14 (22%) patients were operated u

Surgery alone or in combination with adjuvant therapies provides the best possibility for cure for non-small cell lung cancer patients with local disease. The most common surgical resection is lobectomy. In addition, the local and mediastinal lymph nodes are removed for disease staging and adjuvant therapy evaluation. Thoracoscopic surgery is performed through small incisions. The surgical and oncological principles are identical but the benefits of the thoracoscopic approach include faster recovery and extension of curative resection to patients not tolerating thoracotomy. Thoracoscopic lobec

The successful key of video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) to mediastinal tumors (MTs) should be the correct choice of surgical approach according to anatomical positions and relationships between large vessels and tumors. The middle and posterior MTs are good indications of VATS with intercostal approach under lateral position. The superior MTs are usually not indicated to VATS because of anatomical complexity of nerves and vessels of this area Thymus is the most frequent site of MTs and is in the narrow anterior mediastinum between sternum and heart. So that VATS to the anterior MTs needs

Video-assisted thymectomy and its variations is not generally accepted approach in surgical treatment of myasthenia gravis yet. Authors present their initial experience with videothoracoscopic technique in surgery for thymic cysts and myasthenia gravis. Authors prefer left thoracoscopic approach which allows good view to the thymus in mediastinum and neck. Recent studies confirm generally known advantages of miniinvasive surgery and show no differences between open and thoracoscopic thymectomy in terms of treatment outcome of myasthenia gravis. Nevertheless, prospective randomized study compar

BACKGROUND: Advancements in minimally invasive surgery in newborns have allowed even the most complex neonatal procedures to be approached using these techniques. Other authors have demonstrated its efficacy in the treatment of the esophageal atresia with distal fistula.
METHODS: We report our experience based on the thoracoscopic repair of esophageal atresia with distal fistula in two newborns. Birth weights were 2.800 g and 2.300 g respectively. The patients were intubated endotracheally and placed in a left prone position. Four trocars were inserted: the first one of 5 mm was positioned in

OBJECTIVE: Pulmonary sequestration is a rare congenital malformation and may be the cause of recurrent infections or hemoptysis. It has been shown in case reports that resection by video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) is feasible despite the possible technical difficulties due to inflammatory changes, but its role has not been evaluated yet in a larger series of consecutively treated patients.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of all consecutively thoracoscopically treated patients (between January 1991 and January 2005) with pulmonary sequestration in a single center. We included 14 patients

We present the first three cases of esophageal atresia with tracheoesophageal fistula treated with a thoracoscopic approach in our Service. The technique was accomplished through three trocar inserted in the right hemithorax. Carbon dioxide insufflation was required for lung retraction Primary correction was carried out in all the cases without major perioperative complications. The mean surgical time was 240 minutes. One patient had an anastomotic leak, resulting in a complicated postoperative course. The leak healed on conservative treatment. The others two patients were fed at the seventh p

The nerve of Kuntz and alternate neural pathways (ANPs) have long been considered crucial for upper limb sympathetic supply. However, at thoracoscopy, these structures are neither consistently identified nor searched for. This is probably reflective of the effectiveness of an isolated second thoracic ganglionectomy for upper limb sympathectomy. We present the case of a 19-year-old male who underwent a second thoracic ganglionectomy for palmar hyperhidrosis. On the left side, approximately 2.5 cm lateral to the typically located sympathetic chain, a filamentous structure (one-quarter the diamet

Avoiding sternotomy, cumulative experience has demonstrated the efficacy and safety of minimally invasive thoracoscopic thymectomy. Previous reports describing the transcervical, left or right thoracic approach, although demonstrating promising results, involve some compromise of the surgical exposure. We designed a new approach through the subxiphoid route to perform extended thymectomy using the standard thoracoscopic technique. We used this approach on two consecutive patients. Additional port sites were created on both sides of the anterior chest wall for introducing instruments. This appr

Resectional surgery of sympathetic nerves has been known to be the most effective treatment for essential hyperhidrosis and the application of thoracoscopic electrocauterization has provided a minimally-invasive procedure with the least morbidity and a resultant higher satisfaction rate. This paper describes our experience on the 1,167 cases of thoracoscopic sympathetic surgery for the treatment of essential hyperhidrosis. A total of 1,167 patients (674 males (58%) and 493 females (42%), mean age of 26.4 years with palmar (930), craniofacial (190) or axillary (47) hyperhidrosis underwent thora
