Acne constitutes one of the most prevalent skin disorder affecting both skin and mental health of patients. However, no cure has been developed so far. In this area, Thymol constitutes a potential candidate since it is able to restore the healthy microbiota of the skin. However, its permeation properties cause its fast elimination and, to avoid this problem, thymol has been loaded into nanostructured lipid carriers (TH-NLCs). Moreover, to increase the suitability of these systems for skin applications, several surface functionalization strategies of TH-NLCs had been assessed. Among the differe

Thymol (2-isopropyl-5-methylphenol) belongs to the phenolic monoterpenes and mostly occurs in thyme species. It is one of the main compounds of thyme essential oil. Both thymol and thyme essential oil have long been used in traditional medicine as expectorant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, and antiseptic agents, mainly in the treatment of the upper respiratory system. The current search for new directions of biological or therapeutic activities of natural plant substances with known structures includes thyme essential oil and thymol. Novel studies have demonstrated their antibio

Cardiovascular disease represents a vital global disease burden. This study aims to assess the possible cardioprotective effect of thymol against adrenaline-induced myocardial injury (MI) in rats. Furthermore the effect of thymol on cardiac function biomarkers, electrocardiogram (ECG) alterations, oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis and histopathological changes was assessed. MI was induced by adrenaline (2 mg/kg, s.c.) injected as a single dose for 2 consecutive days (24 h apart). Normal and control groups received the vehicle for 21 consecutive days. The other 3 groups were orally admi

BACKGROUND: Thymol is a transient receptor potential ankyrin subtype 1 channel, (TRPA1) agonist found in thyme and oregano. Thymol has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties; thus, thymol is added to many commercially available products including Listerine mouthwash. Thymol is also cytotoxic to HL-60 (acute promyelocytic leukemia) cells in vitro. Therefore, we evaluated the effects of thymol against oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and its anticancer mechanism-of-action.
METHODS: The antiproliferative effects of thymol in OSCC Cal27 cells were determined by MTS assays

Aspergillus flavus is a notorious foodborne fungus, posing a significant risk to humans in the form of hepatocellular carcinoma or aspergillosis. Thymol, as a food preservative, could efficiently kill conidia of A. flavus. However, the underlying mechanisms by which thymol kills A. flavus are not completely understood. With specific fluorescent dyes, we detected several apoptotic hallmarks, including chromatin condensation, phosphatidylserine externalization, DNA damage, mitochondrial depolarization, and caspase 9 activation in conidia exposed to 200 μg/mL of thymol, indicating that thymol ind

Thymol stimulated O2- production in guinea pig neutrophils. O2- production occurred about 30 sec after the addition of thymol, and its rate was independent of extracellular Ca2+. Thymol-induced activity was inhibited by trifluoperazine (TFP), an inhibitor of protein kinase c, and its IC50 was less than that for 12-O-tetradecanoyl phorbol 13-acetate (TPA) induced activity. After complete activation, O2- production was reversed by addition of TFP or by washing out and resuspending in a stimuli-free medium. The responsiveness of the thymol-pulsed cells to another stimulus, TPA, was somewhat more

Currently, the increased incidence of invasive fungal infections globally is posing a significant challenge to public health. Due to drug resistance issues, the clinical efficacy of existing antifungal drugs is seriously insufficient, while new drug development progresses slowly. Consequently, there is an urgent need to discover and develop novel antifungal therapeutics. Natural products have the characteristics of wide sources and few adverse reactions and are one of the sources for developing antifungal drugs. Numerous studies have shown that many compounds isolated from plants and tradition

The concept of "One Health" has developed an inimitable bond between humans and plants, and from the dawn of humankind, plants have been consumed for both food and medicine. The use of plant-based products has increased due to their health-promoting potential, owing to nutritional composition and rich phytochemistry. The current review focuses on medicinal properties, safety studies, and effective applications of Thymus serpyllum, thymol, and carvacrol. For this, databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect were utilized, along with several relevant keywords. The

The success of antimicrobial compounds today is diminished by the ability of microbes to develop resistance. The use of natural compounds as alternatives to antibiotics and/or antifungals is increasing. The potential use of essential oils, particularly their phenolic compounds, thymol or carvacrol, is receiving great interest. The study aims to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the two monoterpenes against Gram-positive and -negative bacteria and various Candida spp., in planktonic form, through MIC and MBC/MFC evaluation, and sessile growth form, through crystal violet and XTT assays. Nausea and vomiting are common and distressing responses to toxins, chemotherapy, and gastrointestinal disturbances. Although antiemetic medications are available, their adverse effects make safer substitutes necessary. In our study, Thymol (THY), a phenolic monoterpene from essential oils, was evaluated for its antiemetic potential using in vivo and in silico methods. In the in vivo study, emesis was induced in 2-day-old chicks by oral administration of copper sulfate pentahydrate (50 mg/kg). THY was administered orally at doses of 10, 20, and 40 mg/kg, alone or in combination with standard a

INTRODUCTION: The drawbacks of using antibiotics as feed additives for blue foxes have gradually become apparent; moreover, thymol has wide-spectrum antimicrobial activity and has the potential to replace antibiotics in various animals. However, there are few reports on the effects of thymol on blue foxes.
METHODS: This study aimed to investigate the effects of different concentrations of thymol on the growth performance, apparent nutrient digestibility, serum biochemical indicators, intestinal morphology, and gut microbiota of blue foxes. Twenty-four male blue foxes (120 ± 5 d) of similar we

Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is an opportunistic infection caused by a fungus of the Candida genus, affecting approximately 75 % of women during their lifetime. Fungal resistance cases and adverse effects have been the main challenges of oral therapies. In this study, the topical application of thin films containing fluconazole (FLU) and thymol (THY) was proposed to overcome these problems. Vaginal films based only on chitosan (CH) or combining this biopolymer with pectin (PEC) or hydroxypropylmethylcellulose acetate succinate (HPMCAS) were developed by the solvent casting method. In additio

Carvacrol and thymol are broad-spectrum natural antimicrobial agents. To reduce their volatility and improve their antimicrobial performance, synergistic systems were prepared loading the active molecules in zinc-modified clays. Montmorillonite (MMT) and zeolite (ZEO) were modified with zinc ions (ZnMMT and ZnZEO), with well-known antimicrobial properties, and then with carvacrol or thymol, reaching the 26 ± 3% and 33 ± 2% w/w of loading, respectively. The resulting hybrid materials were characterized by FT-IR, XPS, XRD, TGA, and GC-MS to evaluate carvacrol/thymol release in simulating food ma

Due to lifespan extension and changes in global climate, the increase in mycoses caused by primary and opportunistic fungal pathogens is now a global concern. Despite increasing attention, limited options are available for the treatment of systematic and invasive mycoses, owing to the evolutionary similarity between humans and fungi. Although plants produce a diversity of chemicals to protect themselves from pathogens, the molecular targets and modes of action of these plant-derived chemicals have not been well characterized. Using a reverse genetics approach, the present study revealed that t

The semisynthesis of 15 new thymol derivatives was achieved through Williamson synthesis and copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) approaches. The reaction of CuAAC using the "Click Chemistry" strategy, in the presence of an alkynyl thymol derivative and commercial or prepared azides, provided nine thymol derivatives under microwave irradiation. This procedure reduces reaction time and cost. All molecular entities were elucidated by 1H and 13C NMR, IR, and HRMS data. These derivatives were evaluated in vitro for their fungicidal activity against Fusarium solani sp. Among the nine

Benzodiazepine administration is known to be related to tolerance and a withdrawal syndrome on sudden cessation. Thymol possesses multiple biological properties especially in the pathogenesis of different brain disorders. However, to the best of our knowledge there is no study that relates the use of thymol to benzodiazepine induced withdrawal symptoms. Therefore the aim of the current study was to investigate the usefulness of thymol in the treatment of benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome in rats. Animals were divided into four groups, thymol (40mg/kg/ml), diazepam (4 mg/kg), thymol + diazepam
