Thymic carcinoma with neuroendocrine differentiation in a calf.

A neuroendocrine carcinoma originating in the thymus was found in a 7-month-old, castrated male, Japanese Black calf. The neoplasm consisted largely of very primitive cells, characterized by the paucity of cytoplasmic organelles, but a few cells were immunoreactive for somatostatin or neurofilaments. The expression of both cytokeratin and neurofilament protein was a feature of neuroendocrine differentiation. This neoplasm considered to be a tumor of a thymic stem cell, with little but indubitable evidence of differentiation into somatostatin-producing cells.

Exceptional thyrolipoma and thymolipoma association: is there a syndrome?

Thyrolipoma and thymolipoma are rare neoplasms of the thyroid gland and thymus, respectively. Their simultaneous occurrence is exceptional. Up to now, only 2 cases have been reported in literature in 1966 and in 1997. For the first time, we report the occurrence of both neoplasms associated with myasthenia gravis in a 64-year-old woman. The value of this case report lies not only in the fact that it allows us to speculate on the presence of a syndrome but also because a complete radiological work-up (computed tomography scanner, magnetic resonance imaging, Positron emission tomography (PET) wi

Thymoma classification: current status and future trends.

The classification of thymic epithelial neoplasms has been a controversial topic for many years. Recent advances in diagnostic methods and renewed interest in the biology of these tumors has led to efforts by investigators to shed new light on their biologic behavior and to offer novel perspectives on these unusual neoplasms. Several new classification schemes have been proposed, including the new World Health Organization schema for the histologic typing of tumors of the thymus. We review the current status of thymoma classification and comment on problem areas and future trends that may offe

[Diagnosis and surgical treatment of mediastinal neoplasms].

The authors share their experiences with examination and surgical treatment of 163 patients with various neoplasms of the mediastinum. The first place among the neoplasms is occupied by tumors of the lymphatic apparatus (33%), the second--by tumors of the thymus (21%). The video-thoracoscopic technique was used in 17 of 131 operations performed. Complications after the operations took place in 6 patients (4.5%), two patients died (1.5%). A conclusion is made that the patients of this category must be treated not only by thoracic surgeons but also by hematologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons a

Recent advances and conceptual changes in the classification of neuroendocrine tumors of the thymus.

Neuroendocrine tumors of the thymus (TNET) are exceedingly rare neoplasms. Their histomorphology is identical to neuroendocrine tumors elsewhere in the body (in particular the lungs) and bears no similarity with thymomas and thymic carcinomas. Recent molecular findings have profoundly changed our perception of these tumors and may impact future histological classification systems.

Primary mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thymus presenting with myasthenia gravis.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) of the thymus is a rare malignant neoplasm of the anterior mediastinum. There are less than 30 cases described in the English literature. We report a case of a 47-year-old lady who presented with myasthenia gravis and was found to have a well-circumscribed anterior mediastinal mass in her medical work-up. This mass was surgically resected and subsequently found to be a primary MEC of the thymus. This is the first reported case of thymic MEC with concurrent myasthenia gravis. Her myasthenia symptoms have persisted following complete surgical resection of her tumou

Imaging findings of expansile lesions of the thymus.

The purpose of this article is to review the imaging findings of the different expansile lesions of the thymus. Almost 50% of all mediastinal masses are located in the anterior mediastinum. The thymus is the most common site of origin of these masses. Several kinds of lesions can arise from this gland because it derives from the three embryonic germ cell layers. Primary neoplasms of the thymus are thymoma, thymolipomas, carcinoma, carcinoid, primary germ cell tumors, and lymphoma. The latter can also involve the organ in a secondary fashion. Other lesions that cause thymic enlargement and that

Thymic localization of gallium-67 in pediatric patients with lymphoid and nonlymphoid tumors.

To determine the significance of 67Ga localization in the thymus of children, 142 67Ga photoscans from 45 children with various tumors were studied. Sixty-nine photoscans were taken for 17 cases of lymphoma, 73 photoscans were made for 28 cases of nonlymphoid tumors. Thymic localization of 67Ga was positive in 16 (36%) of the 45 patients and in 30 (21%) of the 142 photoscans. Positive thymus scans were seen in five (29%) of the 17 cases of lymphoma and 11 (39%) of the 28 solid tumors. The positive incidence was highest (90%) in ages 1-2 yr old. Of the eight grade 2 (strong positive) patients,

Thymoma mimicking lymphoblastic lymphoma: a pitfall in fine-needle aspiration biopsy interpretation.

Lymphocyte-rich thymoma often contains lymphoblasts and lymphoblastic lymphoma often infiltrates the thymus gland. Although these two neoplasms are clinically distinct in most case, their cytologic features may be similar on biopsy. We describe a fine-needle aspiration biopsy of a thymoma in a 50-yr-old man to increase awareness of this pitfall in cytologic interpretation.

Adult Ectopic Cervical Thymic Tissue in relation to a Parathyroid Adenoma and a Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma: A Report of Two Cases.

Ectopic cervical thymus is a rare congenital anomaly, which results because of the failure of complete descent of the thymus. They are incidental findings in the young and may disappear during the early years of life; however, they have rarely been described in adults. Some of them may undergo hyperplasia or neoplastic transformation and become visible or cause symptoms. We report two rare cases of incidentally detected cervical thymic tissue in adults. In one case, the thymic tissue was seen adjacent to a parathyroid adenoma of the left inferior parathyroid gland. In the other, it was seen ad

Thymomas in domestic animals.

A retrospective study of 15 thymomas in domestic animals showed four animals had antemortem signs of dyspnea and grossly visible lumps in the thoracic inlet. The neoplasms were single, multilobulated, encapsulated masses in the anterior mediastinum or thoracic inlet. Cells with clear cytoplasm comprised the bulk of two canine thymomas, whereas the remaining neoplasms had a mixed population of ovoid and spindle-shaped cells. There were lymphocyte populations of varying density in all thymomas. Three thymomas contained structures similar to hyalinized cells and Hassall's corpuscles of normal thy

Thyroid carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation (CASTLE): case report with cytomorphology and review of the literature.

Thyroid carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation (CASTLE) is a rare tumor of the thyroid gland or adjacent soft tissues of the neck. Given the comparatively good prognosis of CASTLE, it is crucial to distinguish this neoplasm from other more aggressive thyroid neoplasms that can have similar or overlapping cytomorphological features. However, there is little information about the cytomorphology of CASTLE available in the literature. Here we report the cytomorphology and histology of thyroid CASTLE in a 52-year-old woman and present a review of the literature.

Robotic Mediastinal Surgery in Patients with Suspected Thymic Neoplasms: First Israeli Experience.

BACKGROUND: Thymectomy is a reliable surgical method for treating patients with myasthenia gravis (MG) and benign tumors of the thymus. Despite the advantages of minimally invasive surgical approaches for resection of thymic neoplasms, there are still controversies regarding the superiority of one type of surgery over another. OBJECTIVES: To report the results of our initial Israeli experience with robotic thymectomy in 22 patients with MG and suspected benign thymic tumors. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 22 patients (10 men, 12 women) who underwent robotic thymectomy by a left-sided (

Primary marginal zone lymphoma of the thymus accompanied by chromosomal anomaly 46,X,dup(X)(p11p22).

We report a case of primary marginal zone lymphoma in the thymus of a 34-year-old woman. She was initially suspected of having a mediastinal plasmacytoma because of the presence of dominantly proliferating plasmacytic cells in a small fragment obtained by thoracoscopic biopsy, and an elevated level of serum monoclonal IgA. However, histology of the tissue obtained by a subsequent open surgical biopsy revealed diffuse proliferation of atypical monocytoid B-lymphocyte-like cells, which showed prominent plasmacytic differentiation and a close association with thymic epithelial cells consistent wi

Studies evaluating the utility of N-methyl-N-nitrosourea as a positive control in carcinogenicity studies in the p53+/- mouse.

Studies conducted under the auspices of International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) have suggested that an alternative mouse carcinogenicity study may be substituted for the traditional 2-year mouse bioassay typically conducted to support the development of drug candidates. The purpose of this study was to characterize the carcinogenic potential of N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU), a DNA alkylating agent, in p53+/- knockout mice to determine its suitability as a positive control agent in an alternative carcinogenicity model. p53+/- knockout mice were administered a single oral dose of 90 mg/kg an

Spindle Epithelial Tumor With Thymus-Like Differentiation in an Infant.

Spindle epithelial tumor with thymus-like differentiation (SETTLE) is an extremely rare malignant neoplasm. Here we describe an infant girl with sublingual SETTLE. Diagnosis was complicated by initial histopathology result from incisional biopsy showing features of chronic sialadenitis. Gross total resection of the lesion demonstrated a low-grade spindle epithelial cell neoplasm, which was confirmed to be SETTLE on specialist pathology review. Previous literature has not identified a case occurring at such a young age or involving a tumor located outside the thyroid gland.

Mucoepidermoid thymic carcinoma: a challenging mediastinal aspirate.

Primary thymic carcinoma-mucoepidermoid cell (MEC) type is rare and only one report describing the cytologic features of this neoplasm in the metastatic site is described. We describe the cytological features of poorly differentiated carcinoma possibly MEC in a 54-year-old man who presented with cough, weight loss, and puffiness of face for 3 months. The significance of this infrequently encountered neoplasm lies in its potential confusion of origin of the tumor-thymus or metastases from a primary bronchial MEC. Immunocytochemical profile was suggestive of a thymic carcinoma of the MEC type.

Cervical ectopic thymus in a 9-month-old girl: diagnostic difficulties.

Ectopic cervical location of the thymus is a very rarely diagnosed developmental disorder in children. This anomaly is usually manifested clinically as a neck tumor suggesting lymphadenopathy, which is also differentiated from more frequently occurring cervical cysts, angiomas, or malignant neoplasms. A decisive examination is the histopathologic assessment of the tumor, supported by necessary immunoassays. A diagnostic process is sometimes very difficult and the results are ambiguous; what is more, this process has a decisive impact on the child's future life. Therefore, a histopathologic eva
