[The surgical treatment of thyroglossal duct cysts and fistulae].

The authors report the results of treatment in 20 patients with thyroglossal duct cysts and/or fistula. Three patients underwent the standard Sistrunk's operation (excision of the cyst with resection of the duct above the hyoid bone with the portion of the muscle surrounding to the foramen caecum), 13 patients were submitted to a modified Sistrunk's operation (removal of the cyst and/or fistula and resection of the middle portion of the hyoid bone with dissection above it only with macroscopic evidence of duct epithelium) and 4 patients underwent less radical procedures. There were no recurren

Thyroglossal duct cysts that mimic laryngeal masses.

Thyroglossal duct cysts are the most common nonodontogenic cysts to occur in the neck, and they often are situated in close proximity to the larynx. Despite this, they almost never present as an intralaryngeal mass. Three cases are cited in which intralaryngeal examination suggested that a larynx lesion was present. In two cases, a submucosal supraglottic mass was seen, while in the third case, the thyroid cartilage was eroded and a laryngeal malignancy was suspected. The role of CT in diagnosing and mapping these tumors is discussed.

Transoral Robotic Excision of Paediatric Lingual Thyroglossal Duct Cyst.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is an important, vaccine-preventable arthropod-borne disease, causing severe illness in children too. In order to evaluate the immune response to different licensed primary immunization schedules, a total of 294 children aged 1 to 11 years of age were enrolled in a randomized, controlled, multi-center trial. The subjects were vaccinated with the pediatric formulation of a TBE vaccine (Encepur children) according to the conventional schedule (Group C; N = 73, vaccination on days 0, 28 and 300), the modified conventional schedule (Group M; N = 139, vaccination on da

Thyroglossal Duct Cyst, a Case Report and Literature Review.

A thyroglossal duct cyst (TGDC) is one of the most commonly encountered congenital anomalies of the neck. However, it is difficult to diagnose as differentiating it from other cysts like brachial cysts, lymphangiomas, epidermoid cysts, dermoid cysts, and hydatid cysts, is challenging. In this paper, we systematically reviewed the literature of 47 patients-25 males (53.1%) and 21 females (44.7%)-about their TGDC to assess the clinical picture, therapy, and prognosis of the disease. Most of the patients were children under the age of ten (63.8%). All patients had a history of a painless swelling

Primary Papillary Thyroid Cancer of a Thyroglossal Duct Cyst.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma in a thyroglossal duct cyst is very rare. We present the case of a teenage boy with a large thyroglossal duct cyst containing papillary thyroid carcinoma. There was no evidence of carcinoma within the thyroid gland, making this an important case of primary thyroglossal duct cyst carcinoma.

Huge thyroglossal duct cyst at the supra-sternal notch.

Thyroglossal duct cysts (TGDC) are the most common congenital cysts in the neck. TGDC typically present as a midline swelling anywhere between the foramen cecum and the isthmus of the thyroid gland. Majority occurs just below the hyoid bone and those descending below the thyrohyoid membrane are rare. TGDC are usually less than 3 cm in diameter while big cysts are uncommon. We present a 19 years old female patient who presented with giant (12 cm diameter) supra-sternal notch cyst which was diagnosed as TGDC only after histopathology. The rarity of such huge TGDC in such uncommon site, which was

No-Scar Transoral Thyroglossal Duct Cyst Excision in Children.

BACKGROUND: No-scar transoral thyroglossal duct cyst (TGDC) excision is a newly developed treatment for TGDC, but limited information is available regarding the clinical outcomes in children. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety, efficacy, and effects of transoral TGDC excision in children. METHODS: Forty-four children <10 years of age received operative treatment for TGDC from January 2013 to December 2014, and follow-up was performed over 24 months. Clinicopathologic, surgical, and follow-up data were collected and analyzed. The primary outcome variable was feasibility of the pr

Invasive thyroglossal duct cyst papillary carcinoma: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: A thyroglossal duct cyst is the most common congenital anomaly of the thyroid gland and midline masses in childhood (70% abnormality in childhood, 7% in adult). Carcinomas arising from a thyroglossal duct cyst are rare (only 1% of thyroglossal duct cyst cases) and characterized by relatively non-aggressive behavior and rare lymphatic spread. They are also diagnosed mostly during the third and fourth decades of life. About 85% to 92% of all thyroglossal duct cyst carcinomas are papillary carcinomas. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 44-year-old Iranian woman with Cacaus

Obstructive lingual tonsil hypertrophy in recurrent thyroglossal duct cyst.

The association between recurrent thyroglossal duct cyst (TGDC) and obstructive lingual tonsil hypertrophy has not previously been discussed. We present the case of a 7-year-old child whose medical and surgical course was complicated by these synchronous factors. The aim of this report is to present the risk factors for recurrence of TGDC and the unique challenge that concurrent lingual tonsil hypertrophy and airway obstruction present to management of patients.

Thyroglossal duct cyst: a cytopathologic study of 26 cases.

Thyroglossal duct cyst (TDC), or embryologic remnants of thyroid gland, is a common congenital anomaly. TDC may cause a midline neck mass, which occasionally may become infected, and rarely gives rise to carcinoma. As a number of other nonneoplastic and neoplastic lesions can cause cystic masses in the neck, we explored the role of fine-needle aspiration (FNA) in making a preoperative diagnosis of TDC for a more accurate and timely clinical intervention. Twenty-six cases of TDC were identified from the cytopathology files of The Johns Hopkins Hospital in a 15-yr period (1990-2004). Material wa

Thyroglossal duct cyst causing airway obstruction in an adult.

Thyroglossal duct cysts, though not uncommon, rarely present with evidence of laryngeal compromise. The case presented is one of the very few cases with documented laryngeal invasion reported in the English language. Of clinical significance is the patient's presentation with laryngeal symptoms of choking and dysphonia in the presence of a small anterior cervical mass. While the thyroglossal duct cyst usually presents as an asymptomatic anterior neck mass, this case illustrates the importance of considering a thyroglossal duct cyst in any patient with airway compromise in the absence of a neck

Papillary carcinoma in thyroglossal duct cyst: A case report.

A thyroglossal duct cyst is a benign congenital lesion present in 7% of the population. Malignant transformation is rare, with an incidence of 1%, 90% of which are papillary carcinomas. We report the case of a 36-year-old woman with an asymptomatic 2.5cm neck nodule. Excision of the cyst, total thyroidectomy, and neck lymphadenectomy were performed, with a diagnosis of papillary carcinoma arising in a thyroglossal cyst, classic subtype, infiltrating the pericystic soft tissues and presenting micrometastases in two lymph nodes without extracapsular spread. We conducted a literature review, with

Thyroglossal duct cyst: Factors affecting cosmetic outcome and recurrence.

BACKGROUND: Thyroglossal duct cyst (TDC) is the most common congenital abnormality in the neck in children. The purpose of this study was to perform a comprehensive review of all cases of TDC surgically treated at a single institution and to evaluate the factors that influence the rate of recurrence, and the aesthetic outcome of the surgery on follow up. METHODS: All cases of TDC surgically treated at the Department of Pediatric Surgery at Meyer Hospital from January 2005 to December 2016 were selected. Charts from 248 patients were reviewed and risk factors for recurrence evaluated. A questi

Transoral robotic excision of a lingual thyroglossal duct cyst.

Lingual thyroglossal duct cysts are a rare and potentially difficult to manage tongue base lesion. We report a case of transoral robotic surgical excision of a lingual thyroglossal duct cyst, in an adult patient. A 68-year-old man presented with a large base of tongue mass, with appearance on ultrasound and computed tomography consistent with a lingual thyroglossal duct cyst. We describe the surgical technique for transoral robotic excision of the cyst. The cyst was completely excised, and the patient had a smooth recovery. There has been no recurrence of the cyst. Transoral robotic surgery ha

Thyroglossal duct cyst accompanied by laryngomalacia and pulmonary sequestration.

A 2-month-old full-term female infant developed nasal stridor, which progressed to respiratory distress and poor sucking ability. Direct pharyngoscopy showed laryngomalacia and a midline cystic mass in the lingual region. The mass pressed on the epiglottis, causing dyspnea. Computed tomography incidentally revealed extralobar pulmonary sequestration. Direct deroofing of the lingual cyst and plication of the epiglottis were performed at 3 months of age, and the patient recovered from the respiratory distress. Histopathology of the cystic mass showed a thyroglossal duct cyst. Thoracoscopic resec

Transoral robotic resection of a lingual thyroglossal duct cyst.

Thyroglossal duct cysts (TGDCs) are epithelial rests of the thyroid gland left during embryologic descent from the tongue base. Thyroglossal duct cysts confined to the tongue base alone are even more unusual. We present a case of a 45-year-old woman who presented with complaints of sore throat, globus, and throat clearing for 10 years. On examination she was found to have a 2 × 1.5-cm cystic-appearing mass, left of midline in the vallecula. The patient had a transoral robotic resection of this vallecular cyst, which was subsequently found to be a lingual TGDC. We believe this is the first repo

Thyroglossal duct cyst presenting as an anterior tongue fistula.

An unusual case of thyroglossal duct cyst occurring in the tongue base and fistulizing to the anterior tongue is presented. No previous descriptions have been found in the literature associating this embryological remnant with fistulization to the anterior tongue. The treatment was successfully accomplished through a combined transhyoid and intraoral approach.

An Epidermoid Cyst in the Neck Mimicking a Thyroglossal Duct Cyst: A Case Report.

Anterior neck masses, especially congenital neck masses are one of the most common causes of visits to an ENT specialist. Commonly encountered masses include thyroid swellings, thyroglossal duct cyst, lymph nodes, dermoid/epidermoid cysts, brachial cleft cysts, and lymphatic malformations. Hence a thorough clinical history and examination make an important part of evaluation supported by radiological and pathological correlation. Here we report a case of a 44-year-old male patient presenting with anterior neck swelling which was initially diagnosed as a thyroglossal cyst but on histopathologic
