Thyroid hormones in canine pregnancy and lactation.

It is believed that thyroid function has a significant effect on fertility and fetal development in mammals. So far, however, only few studies have been published about potential effects of the reproductive cycle stage on thyroid hormone concentrations in dogs. Therefore, over the course of 122 pregnant and non-pregnant cycles in healthy bitches, Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free Thyroxine (fT4), total Thyroxine (tT4) and Progesterone (P4) were measured six times to assess the influence of the cycle stage and pregnancy on hormone concentrations. The aim was to evaluate established refere

Cognitive functions and thyroid hormones secretion disorders.

The functioning of the thyroid gland is of great importance for the formation, maturation and activity of the central nervous system. The association of clinical thyroid dysfunction with mental disorders, including cognitive impairment, seems to be well documented. Abnormal concentrations of thyroid hormones can lead to deterioration of cognitive processes through changes in neurotransmission, intensification of oxidative stress, or impact on β-amyloid transformation and glucose metabolism in the central nervous system. Doubts concern mainly subclinical forms of thyroid dysfunction. According

Thyroid hormones states and brain development interactions.

The action of thyroid hormones (THs) in the brain is strictly regulated, since these hormones play a crucial role in the development and physiological functioning of the central nervous system (CNS). Disorders of the thyroid gland are among the most common endocrine maladies. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify in broad terms the interactions between thyroid hormone states or actions and brain development. THs regulate the neuronal cytoarchitecture, neuronal growth and synaptogenesis, and their receptors are widely distributed in the CNS. Any deficiency or increase of them (

[Effect of thyroid hormones on calcitonin secretion].

A study of 140 patients with diffuse toxic goiter showed phasic change in plasma calcitonin concentration and blood calcitonin activity: an increase in these indices at early stages of disease with a subsequent decrease in a severe form of thyrotoxicosis. Basal calcitonin secretion by fragments of the thyrotoxic thyroid was much higher than that euthyroid gland. In incubation of paranodal tissue of the thyroid of patients with nodular euthyroid goiter and fragments of the thyroid of patients with thyrotoxicosis of moderate severity with thyroxin at concentration 10(-8) M the level of calcitoni

[Thyroid hormones and the metabolism of lipoproteins].

Variations, generally not very marked, observed in triglycerides levels during thyroid affections are the result of the action of thyroid hormones on very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) metabolism. Hepatic synthesis of VLDL is increased in hyperparathyroidism due to elevation of circulating fatty acids levels, and in hypothyroidism only in obese patients. Catabolism of VLDL is accelerated in hyperthyroidism and slowed in hypothyroidism. The variations are probably related to changes in activity of lipoprotein lipase and/or hepatic triglyceride lipase, as well as structural modifications in VLD

Prenatal programming of adult thyroid function by alcohol and thyroid hormones.

Increasing evidence associates environmental challenges early in life with permanent alterations of physiological functions in adulthood. These changes in fetal environment can trigger physiological adaptations by the fetus, called fetal programming, which may be beneficial before birth but permanently influence the physiology of the organism. In this study, we investigated the potential connection between alcohol-induced decreased maternal thyroid function and the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) function of adult rat offspring. Plasma 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T(3)), thyroxine (T(4)), and

Studies on changes of thyroid hormones in various liver diseases: usefulness of free thyroid hormones as liver function test.

Various thyroid parameters in liver disease which were morphologically diagnosed were measured, and their relationship to liver function was mainly studied. Serum T4 levels were elevated in acute hepatitis (AH), chronic persistent hepatitis (CPH) and chronic aggressive hepatitis (CAH) compared with in normal controls (C). Serum T3 levels were elevated in CAH and reduced in liver cirrhosis (LC). Serum reverse T3 (rT3) levels were elevated in AH and chronic liver diseases (CLD). T3/T4 ratios decreased in AH, CPH and CAH. RT3/T3 ratios increased in AH and CLD. Serum Free T3 (FT3) levels reduced i

Abnormal serum thyroid hormones concentration with healthy functional gland: a review on the metabolic role of thyroid hormones transporter proteins.

Laboratory findings can definitely help the patients not to enter into status, where the damage might be happen due to a miss-diagnosis based on clinical assessment alone. The secondary disease accompanied with thyroid patients should also carefully check out due to the interference which some diseases can cause in the amount of serum thyroid hormone, particularly the free thyroxin. The dilemma over thyroid clinical diagnosis occur due to variation on serum thyroid hormone which initiated by other non-thyroidal disorders which can play an important roles in metabolic disorders of thyroid hormo

Syndrome of resistance to thyroid hormone: insights into thyroid hormone action.

Thyroid hormones (T3, T4) exert multiple cellular effects through nuclear thyroid hormone receptors (TR alpha, TR beta). Thyroid hormone receptors are transcription factors that act by altering patterns of gene expression. Resistance to thyroid hormone (RTH) is a rare disorder caused by mutations in the TR beta gene. Biochemically, the syndrome is defined by elevated circulating levels of free thyroid hormones due to reduced target tissue responsiveness and normal, or elevated, levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). This "inappropriate" TSH elevation contrasts with the situation in hyper

Thyroid hormones and minerals in immunocorrection of disorders in autoimmune thyroid diseases.

Thyroid hormones and essential elements iodine (I), selenium (Se), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), etc. play an important role in the work of many organs and systems of the body, including the immune system and the thyroid gland, and a violation of their supply can be the cause of pathological changes in them. In pathology, the interaction between thyroid hormones (TG), minerals and the immune system is disturbed. The review of the literature examines the immunomodulatory role of TG, minerals, their properties, and their participation in the pathogenesis of aut

[Biological markers reflecting peripheral effects of thyroid hormones in autonomous thyroid adenoma].

In some patients with functioning thyroid autonomous nodules preclinical hyperthyroidism is detected. It is important to know, whether in this intermediate clinical state beside the suppression of pituitary TSH secretion other target organs are also affected by serum free-thyroxine and free-triiodothyronine levels still within the normal range. Determining some sensitive, but not specific biologic markers reflecting the impact of thyroid hormones at the peripheral tissue level, it was demonstrated that in the group of preclinical hyperthyroidism the mean level of plasma fibronectin exceeded th

Influence of rifampicin on thyroid gland volume, thyroid hormones, and antipyrine metabolism.

The influence of rifampicin (450 mg/day for 28 days) on the hepatic microsomal enzymes and thyroid function variables were investigated in 13 healthy male volunteers. After 14 and 28 days of treatment a significant increase in median thyroid volume (determined ultrasonically) was demonstrated (20 ml, range 13-28 before; 26 ml, range 18-48 at day 14, and 24 ml, range 17-40 at day 28) (p less than 0.01). A significant decrease in median serum free T4 index levels was seen (94.1 arbitrary units, range 80.1-123.4 before treatment; 86.8, range 71.7-102.0 at day 14, and 85.3, range 65.5-131.3 at day

Perspective: Hormones and immune development: bidirectional regulation between thyroid hormones and the immune system.

The immune system operates within a dynamic physiological environment shaped by systemic regulatory signals, among which endocrine factors are increasingly recognized as important modulators of immune function. Although thyroid hormones are well known for their roles in metabolism and development, their contribution to adaptive immunity, particularly in regulating T cell responses, remains incompletely understood. Emerging evidence suggests that thyroid-immune interactions are context-dependent across physiological and pathological conditions. In this Perspective, we propose that thyroid hormo

Use of exogenous hormones hormones and risk of papillary thyroid cancer (Washington, United States).

OBJECTIVES: Greater incidence of thyroid cancer in women than men, particularly evident during the reproductive years, has led to the suggestion that female hormones may increase risk of this disease. We conducted a population-based case-control study in women aged 18 to 64 years in three counties of western Washington State (United States) to assess the relation of use of exogenous hormones, including oral contraceptives (OC) and hormone replacement therapy (HRT), to risk of papillary thyroid cancer. METHODS: Of 558 women with thyroid cancer of the follicular epithelium diagnosed during 1988

Thyroid hormones and neurovascular development: An integrated framework.

Thyroid hormones (THs) are essential regulators of brain development known for their roles in neuronal proliferation, migration, differentiation, and maturation. However, brain development relies on coordinated interactions among neural, glial, vascular, and extracellular matrix components, supporting a broader role for TH beyond neuronal effects. Here, we examine how spatial regulation of TH availability contributes to neurovascular development by integrating findings from developmental animal models, human fetal tissue, cerebral organoids, and TH transport disorders. We discuss the molecular

Thyroid Hormones-An Underestimated Player in Dilated Cardiomyopathy?

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is the most prevalent cardiomyopathy, typified by left ventricular dilation and systolic dysfunction. Many patients with DCM have altered thyroid status, especially lower levels of free triiodothyronine (T3) and elevated levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone. Moreover, growing evidence indicates that even subtle changes in thyroid status (especially low T3) are linked with a worse long-term prognosis and a higher risk of mortality. Notably, recent discoveries have shown that not only local myocardial thyroid hormones (THs) bioavailability could be diminished due to
