We analysed 131 fractures of the tibial condyles in 130 patients, using a modification of the classification of Schatzker, McBroom and Bruce (1979). The patients were reviewed at an average of 7.6 years after the injury. Fifty-five (42%) fractures had been treated conservatively and 76 (58%) operatively. After a historical review of the term refracture and the related nomenclature, three cases of multiple refracture of the tibia are presented. Fatigue-type stress fractures occur following repetitive loading of normal bone. These occur frequently in the tibia, although vertical orientation to the fracture is much less common than transverse orientation. Without a convincing history of new or accelerated muscular activity, imaging can be difficult to interpret and evaluation may require more than one imaging modality to exclude other diagnostic considerations, including neoplasm and osteomyelitis.

An isolated fracture of the middle and lower third of the tibia occurred with marked regularity in a large number of camel-racing jockeys. The mechanism of this fracture was analysed. It was concluded that the compression-rotation of the leg below the knee between the trunks of adjacent racing camels produced this injury, but the sparing of the fibula could not be explained. Simple measures are described such that the incidence of these and other injuries sustained by the jockeys can be markedly reduced.

PURPOSE: The posterior malleolar fracture (PMF) in tibial spiral fractures are a common type of complication that occurs in tibial fractures. However, the indication of fixation for posterior fractures is still under debate and varies between different surgeons'.
