High flow nasal oxygen therapy after mechanical ventilation in dogs with tick paralysis: a case series.

Five dogs diagnosed with and treated for Ixodes holocyclus tick paralysis were successfully weaned from mechanical ventilation (MV) to high flow nasal oxygen therapy (HFNOT). All dogs were mechanically ventilated primarily for hypoventilation for a median time of 80 h (36-113 h). Concurrent conditions included aspiration pneumonia (n = 3) and laryngeal paralysis causing upper airway obstruction (n = 3). Median duration of HFNOT was 4 h (0.5-24 h) before either de-escalation to traditional oxygen therapy (TOT) or discontinuation from oxygen support. Reported complications included superficial c

Seasonal dynamics of the Karoo paralysis tick (Ixodes rubicundus): a comparative study on Merino and Dorper sheep.

Karoo paralysis in South Africa is induced in livestock by feeding female Ixodes rubicundus ticks when infestation densities on hosts exceed certain critical levels. It has been shown previously that Angora goats are at a higher risk of being paralysed than Merino sheep, and such differences have been related to differences in feeding behaviour and spatial distribution of the two small-stock breeds. We hypothesized that differences in infestation densities with Karoo paralysis ticks would also occur between Merino and Dorper sheep breeds. A study was conducted under natural conditions in the s

Two seasons of tick paralysis in Victoria yet one season in Queensland and New South Wales, Australia.

We studied 22,840 cases of tick paralysis in dogs and cats that were attributable to infestation with the eastern paralysis tick, Ixodes holocyclus. We report that the mortality rates from the holocyclotoxins of the tick or from euthanasia due to complications arising from tick paralysis in dogs and cats were 10% and 8%, respectively. The distribution of cases of tick paralysis among the 52 weeks of 22 years (1999 to 2020, inclusive) in four regions along the eastern coast of Australia revealed much about how the life-cycle of this tick varied among regions. The four regions in our study were:

A 60-year meta-analysis of tick paralysis in the United States: a predictable, preventable, and often misdiagnosed poisoning.

Tick paralysis (TP) is a neurotoxic poisoning primarily afflicting young girls in endemic regions. Recent case series of TP have described increasing misdiagnoses of TP as the Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). A meta-analysis of the scientific literature was conducted using Internet search engines to assess the evolving epidemiology of TP. Fifty well-documented cases of TP were analyzed over the period 1946-2006. Cases were stratified by demographics, clinical manifestations, and outcomes. Misdiagnoses were subjected to Yates-corrected chi-square analyses to detect statistically significant diffe

Detection and micro-scale isolation of a low molecular mass paralysis toxin from the tick, Argas (Persicargas) walkerae.

This study describes the isolation of a 11 kDa paralysis toxin from crude larval extracts of Argas (Persicargas) walkerae by exploiting the cross-reactivity of a monoclonal antibody (4B12), directed against the paralysis toxin of Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi. This low molecular mass is in contrast to previous findings of a 60-70 kDa toxin for A. (P.) walkerae, but is similar to neurotoxins isolated from venomous forms of the class Arachnida, which comprise the orders Araneae (spiders). Scorpionida (Scorpions) and Acari (ticks and mites). Since numerous antigenic bands, ranging between 11 and

The dispersion of the Karoo paralysis tick, Ixodes rubicundus, within a naturally infested population of sheep in South Africa.

The ratio of variance to mean (s2/means) of numbers of Ixodes rubicundus (males and females) per sheep was used as a measure of the dispersion pattern of this tick within a naturally infested population of sheep. Sheep were divided into two groups, one with previous contact with I. rubicundus and the other with no previous contact. Samples of 10 sheep from each group were searched for ticks on a weekly basis for 19 weeks during the winter of 1986. In each group, both male and female ticks had an s2/means ratio greater than 1 for the majority of observation periods indicating an aggregated disp

Immunomic Investigation of Holocyclotoxins to Produce the First Protective Anti-Venom Vaccine Against the Australian Paralysis Tick, Ixodes holocyclus.

Venom producing animals are ubiquitously disseminated among vertebrates and invertebrates such as fish, snakes, scorpions, spiders, and ticks. Of the ~890 tick species worldwide, 27 have been confirmed to cause paralysis in mammalian hosts. The Australian paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus) is the most potent paralyzing tick species known. It is an indigenous three host tick species that secretes potent neurotoxins known as holocyclotoxins (HTs). Holocyclotoxins cause a severe and harmful toxicosis leading to a rapid flaccid paralysis which can result in death of susceptible hosts such as dogs.

Climatic requirements of the eastern paralysis tick, Ixodes holocyclus, with a consideration of its possible geographic range up to 2090.

The eastern paralysis tick, Ixodes holocyclus, is an ectoparasite of medical and veterinary importance in Australia. The feeding of I. holocyclus is associated with an ascending flaccid paralysis which kills many dogs and cats each year, with the development of mammalian meat allergy in some humans, and with the transmission of Rickettsia australis (Australian scrub typhus) to humans. Although I. holocyclus has been well studied, it is still not known exactly why this tick cannot establish outside of its present geographic distribution. Here, we aim to account for the presence as well as the a

[The vulnerability of peripheral nerves and the somatic toxin linkage in tick paralysis of chickens, caused by Argas (Persicargas) walkerae (author's transl)].

Investigations on the impulse propagation and the pattern of amplitudes of toxically by Argas (Persicargas) walkerae larvae impaired peripheral nerves were carried out under oxygen saturated and anoxic conditions. It was demonstrated, that the maximum nerve conduction velocities of the isolated N. ischiadicus were slightly lowered in the first carbogenic and anoxic phase, in comparison with normal nerves. After the second incubation the conduction velocities were, however, almost the same or even higher. The survival times of the nerves after anoxic exposure, which were determined by the tempo

Preliminary development of monoclonal antibody-based ELISA assays for Ixodes holocyclus paralysis tick holocyclotoxin assessments as an alternative to in vivo approaches.

Tick paralysis in companion animal pets is primarily caused by holocyclotoxins secreted by the salivary glands of the Australian eastern paralysis tick, Ixodes holocyclus. These toxins have been traditionally identified and quantified using in vivo neonate assays that are relatively reproducible but constrained by animal ethics. Thus improved analytical methods are needed to support the standardisation of antiserum products, toxin characterisation, and the development of next-generation therapeutics to treat companion animal paralysis. Specific anti-holocyclotoxin (anti-HT) monoclonal antibodi

Prospective Study of 506 Dogs with Tick Paralysis: Investigating Measures of Severity and Clinical Signs as Predictors of Mortality and Assessing the Benefits of Different Therapeutics.

Survey data from 42 Australian eastern seaboard veterinary practices involving 506 cases are reported with regard to clinical signs, disease severity, mortality, use of pharmaceuticals, and recovery times. New measures of disease severity (visual analogue scales (VAS) and facial expressions) were tested alongside "gold standard" measures (neuromuscular junction (NMJ) scores). Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to evaluate associations between variables. The VAS scores were progressive, prognostic (especially the respiratory scores) and correlated with the

Laboratory evaluations of the 3-month efficacy of oral lotilaner (Credelio™) against experimental infestations of dogs with the Australian paralysis tick, Ixodes holocyclus.

BACKGROUND: From three days following host attachment, the Australian paralysis tick, Ixodes holocyclus, secretes a neurotoxin that annually causes paralysis in approximately 10,000 domestic pets. Lotilaner, a novel isoxazoline formulated in a chewable flavoured tablet (CredelioTM), produces rapid onset of acaricidal activity in dogs, with an efficacy duration of at least one month. Two studies were performed to determine the efficacy of lotilaner against I. holocyclus infestations over 3 months. METHODS: Both studies included 16 dogs, ranked according to I. holocyclus counts on Day -5 (from

Tick-Induced Facial Palsy.

Ticks are obligate blood-sucking arthropods that exist worldwide. Their targets include all vertebrates and humans. Ticks are harmful to people with regard to transmission in many viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections. In addition to these diseases and toxin-induced neurological complications, tick-induced paralysis is a syndrome related to neurotoxin production, and its mortality ratio in the literature is reported to be approximately 10%. Tick-induced isolated facial paralysis is a rare form of the disease developing because of attachment to the external auditory canal or attachment beh

Abducens nerve palsy following a tick bite: a case report.

Neuromuscular paralysis caused by salivary proteins of ticks is a well-known complication after tick bites in Australia, North America, and South Africa. Symptoms may include general weakness, difficulty walking, ascending paralysis, and bulbar paralysis with diplopia, culminating in respiratory failure. In Europe, toxin-mediated paralysis has rarely been noted. We report a case of cranial nerve paralysis with delayed onset after a tick bite in northern Germany.
