Endometrial hyperplasia and pyometra in captive lions (Panthera leo) and tigers (Panthera tigris).

Endometrial hyperplasia (EH) is a pathologic condition of the uterus with increased endometrial gland to stroma ratio compared to normal cyclic uterine proliferation. In domestic animals, EH often involves cystic distension of proliferating endometrial glands and may be concurrent with pyometra. In large captive nondomestic felids, an association between EH and pyometra is common; however, detailed species differences between the histological uterine findings in lions (Panthera leo) and tigers (Panthera tigris) and clinical manifestations have yet to be described. Uterine sections from 14 lion

SARS-COV-2 INFECTION AND LONGITUDINAL FECAL SCREENING IN MALAYAN TIGERS (PANTHERA TIGRIS JACKSONI), AMUR TIGERS (PANTHERA TIGRIS ALTAICA ), AND AFRICAN LIONS (PANTHERA LEO KRUGERI) AT THE BRONX ZOO, NEW YORK, USA.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) emerged as the cause of a global pandemic in 2019-2020. In March 2020, New York City became the epicenter in the United States for the pandemic. On 27 March 2020, a Malayan tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni) at the Bronx Zoo in New York City developed a cough and wheezing with subsequent inappetence. Over the next week, an additional Malayan tiger and two Amur tigers (Panthera tigris altaica) in the same building and three lions (Panthera leo krugeri) in a separate building also became ill. The index case was anesthetized for diagnosti

Cutaneous and splenic mastocytosis in a juvenile Malayan tiger.

A male Malayan tiger cub developed well-circumscribed, erythematous, alopecic lesions on the face, torso, and paws when 1-wk-old. Biopsies of a torso lesion and a right front paw lesion at 1-mo-old confirmed cutaneous mast cell tumors (MCTs). MCTs on the paws grew into pendulous masses up to 6.5 cm in diameter by 3-mo-old, but those on the face and torso regressed. Fine-needle aspiration of the spleen at 3-mo-old revealed marked mast cell infiltration. The spleen and the right paw cutaneous MCT were removed; the paw MCT recurred within 7 d. A 12-bp tandem duplication, suggesting a somatic muta

Endoparasites of the Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica).

There have been few reports on the diversity and prevalence of parasitic fauna of the endangered Siberian tiger, which inhabits the territory of the Russian Far East. The present review attempts to summarize the information about the parasitic fauna of wild Siberian tigers, which includes 15 helminths and 3 protozoan species. The most prevalent parasitic species was found to be Toxocara cati, followed by Toxascaris leonina. Another commonly recorded Platyhelminth species is Paragonimus westermani, which causes a lethal infection of the lung parenchyma in Siberian tigers. However, the informati

Meningioma in a Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris).

A 17-yr-old female ovariectomized Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) was presented dead on arrival to the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine. The tiger was a resident of a sanctuary for big cats and had a history of juvenile-onset blindness of unknown cause. The tiger suffered two seizures the morning of presentation and expired shortly after resolution of the second seizure. Gross necropsy findings included a meningioma attached to the left frontal bone and associated with the left frontal lobe. Histologically, the mass was composed of meningothelial cells arising

Thrombotic microangiopathy in two tiger snake envenomations.

Thrombotic microangiopathies are a rare group of disorders with features such as microangiopathic haemolytic anaemia, thrombocytopenia and renal failure. Thrombotic microangiopathy has been previously reported in association with envenomation from a number of snake species. We present the first two reported cases of thrombotic microangiopathy caused by envenomation from the common tiger snake (Notechis scutatus). Both patients had classical features of thrombotic microangiopathy with microangiopathic haemolytic anaemia, thrombocytopenia and renal failure commencing in the first 48 hours after

Persistent metanephric ducts in a geriatric white tiger.

An 18-year-old male intact white Tiger (Panthera tigris) was euthanized after a clinical diagnosis of severe renal failure. Postmortem macroscopic examination of the kidneys revealed unilateral hydronephrosis with renal calculi and bilateral cortical and medullary fibrosis and papillary coagulation necrosis. Interestingly, multiple large persistent metanephric ducts were found at the corticomedullary junctions accompanied by marked interstitial fibrosis, tubular atrophy, and lymphoplasmacytic interstitial nephritis. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of persistent metanephric du

Metastatic malignant mesothelioma in a tiger (Panthera tigris).

An 8-yr-old female tiger (Panthera tigris) died following a 2-wk history of progressive depression, anorexia, respiratory insufficiency, and exercise intolerance. At the time of necropsy, numerous coalescing, 4-20-mm, tan, firm nodules were scattered throughout the pleural surfaces of the thoracic wall and the mediastinum, giving a velvety appearance to these surfaces. Histologically, the nodules were diagnosed as malignant pleural mesothelioma. Secondary metastasis to the regional tracheobronchial and mediastinal lymph nodes was observed.

Genetic abnormality of the visual pathways in a "white" tiger.

"White"tigers show an inherited reduction of pigment, produced by an autosomal recessive gene. The brain of one of these tigers shows an abnormality of the visual pathways similar to abnormalities that are associated with albinism in many other mammals. There is a close relationship between the reduced pigment formation, the pathway abnormality, and strabismus.

Eye-of-the-Tiger Sign with an Unexpected Pathological Diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Clinical diagnosis of atypical parkinsonisms may be challenging. The eye-of-the-tiger sign on brain MRI, typical of neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation, has been anecdotally observed in cases clinically diagnosed as atypical parkinsonisms. OBJECTIVES: To show how clinical syndromes and even neuroimaging sometimes may lead the neurologist to a misunderstanding, just as to emphasize the important role of pathology to establish the final diagnosis in these cases. METHODS: Clinico-pathological case. RESULTS: A 67-year-old-woman presented with progressive painful stiffness

'Tiger woman sign' hypercalcaemia: a diagnostic challenge.

Hypercalcaemia is a common electrolyte abnormality with 90% of cases due to either primary hyperparathyroidism or malignancy. Other causes of hypercalcaemia often require careful consideration. We describe an approach to the assessment of hypercalcaemia, particularly where preliminary tests are inconclusive. This approach is illustrated by a case which posed a diagnostic challenge: a patient with significant hypercalcaemia due to acute atypical isolated sarcoid myositis. This case highlights an under-recognised clinical syndrome with distinct biochemical and radiological findings.

ACE2 Expression in the Cat and the Tiger Gastrointestinal Tracts.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) has been identified as the functional receptor for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). It has been identified in the human gastrointestinal tract (GIT), and SARS-CoV-2 has been isolated in human and animal fecal samples. The aim of the present study was to investigate the expression of ACE2 in the gastrointestinal tract of domestic (cat) and wild (tiger) felines. Samples of the pylorus, duodenum, and distal colon were collected from six cats and one tiger. The tissues were processed for immunofluorescence assay with an anti-human

"Tiger stripes" sign in acute coronary syndrome.

The incidence of mitral regurgitation in acute myocardial syndromes is variable. Echocardiographic evaluation is fundamental in making a proper diagnosis of mechanical complications and to offer timely treatment. We present a case of a 64-year-old male who was admitted to the ER in acute pulmonary edema. The electrocardiogram showed negative ST-segment deviation from V4-V6, positive ST-segment deviation in aVR. Multivessel disease with severe mitral regurgitation was seen in catheterization. A transthoracic echocardiogram revealed important mitral regurgitation showing the "tiger stripes" sign

Hematomas in Tiger Territory: An Endovascular Alternative to Wading In.

A 26-year-old man presented with gunshot wound to the epigastrium. At surgery, he was hemodynamically stable and had a tense hematoma with thrill in zone 2 (right side) and porta triad. After liver injury was controlled, he underwent percutaneous stenting of a renal artery-vena cava fistula and the hepatic artery injury was followed. Historically, penetrating injury to zone 2 has mandated operative exploration. However, with the advent of endovascular options, in stable patients, catheter-based options offer a reasonable alternative with less risk of blood loss and possible nephrectomy. Renal

Tiger snake (Notechis scutatus) envenomation in a horse.

BACKGROUND: A 7-year-old Thoroughbred gelding presented with muscle fasciculation, reluctance to move, profuse sweating, tachycardia, tachypnoea and a localised, unilateral swelling on the muzzle. History and physical examination were suggestive of snake envenomation. METHODS: A sandwich ELISA for the detection of snake venom was performed on serum and urine samples. RESULT: The test performed on urine confirmed a diagnosis of tiger snake envenomation. CONCLUSION: The response to treatment with antivenom and supportive medical therapy was excellent.

Disseminated histoplasmosis in a Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris).

Disseminated infection with Histoplasma capsulatum was diagnosed in a 7-yr-old female Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris). Clinical signs were nonspecific with the exception of brief periods of tachypnea for 5 days prior to death. H. capsulatum organisms were found in the lungs, tracheobronchial lymph nodes, and liver. Diagnosis was confirmed by tracheal wash, urine H. capsulatum enzyme immunoassay, and necropsy results. This report represents the first published account of disseminated histoplasmosis in a tiger.

A thymic carcinoid in a Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris).

An 18-yr-old Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris) presented with acute onset hind limb paresis. Radiographic and ultrasonographic imaging revealed a caudal abdominal aortic thrombus and a cranial mediastinal mass. Necropsy confirmed aortic thrombosis. Necrotizing enteritis and multifocal renal thrombosis were also noted. The cranial mediastinum contained a bilobed mass that histologically and ultrastructurally was consistent with a carcinoid.

Outbreak and genotyping of canine distemper virus in captive Siberian tigers and red pandas.

In this study, four canine distemper virus (CDV) strains were isolated from captive Siberian tigers (Panthera tigris altaica) and red pandas (Ailurus fulgens) during two separate CDV outbreaks in a zoo in Guangdong province, China. Sequence alignment and phylogenetic analyses based on the full-length hemagglutinin (H) and fusion (F) genes showed that they were closely identical to genotype Asia-1. Prior to confirmation of CDV in Siberian tigers, to control spread of the disease, a live attenuated combination CDV vaccine was used among almost all carnivore animals except for red pandas in which
