ESO-Det: An Efficient Small Object Detector for Real-Time UAV Perception.

Object detection in aerial drone imagery has attracted increasing attention in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV) sensing applications. However, small objects occupying limited image regions, with large scale variations and similar background interference, make it challenging to perceive them. Meanwhile, the constrained computing power of the onboard platform imposes requirements on the speed and efficiency of the algorithm. In this paper, we propose an efficient object detection network for real-time UAV perception named ESO-Det. Our approach introduces three key innovations: (1) Dense Cross-branch

Time in mind: a multidisciplinary review on temporal perception, cognition, and memory.

This review examines temporal cognition through the lens of Mental Time Travel (MTT): the subjective experience of recalling past events and using them to construct future scenarios. The analysis specifically addresses how language and cultural context affect these abilities, integrating psychology, linguistics, cognitive neuroscience, and anthropology. Findings from comparative cognition challenge whether they are uniquely human. Although such an approach was traditionally taken in non-human primates, the field of comparative cognition has become much more diverse. Comparative insights derive

Psychobiological and Metabolic Correlates of Time Perception in Humans: An Exploratory Study.

Time perception-the subjective sense of how quickly or consistently time passes-shows striking variability across individuals, yet its physiological basis remains poorly understood. We hypothesized that internal clock speed and trial-to-trial variability in time perception would be linked to physiological and behavioral states. In a cohort of healthy adults (n = 59) and individuals carrying rare mitochondrial DNA mutations affecting mitochondrial energy transformation (n = 36), we explored the associations between time perception (time estimation and production) with measures of immune mitocho

Time perception and suicidal ideation during COVID-19 pandemic: A longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: There are several reports of disruptions in time perception during lockdown periods throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Our aim was to study the role of subjective flow of time (SFT) in the triggering of suicidal ideation in patients with a history of suicide attempt (SA), as compared with affective controls without such history (AC). METHODS: This study involved 296 psychiatric patients that were assessed five times between 2020 and 2021. We analyzed the SFT using a mixed logistic model and characterized SFT during significant periods of governmental restrictions. Multivariate logi

Strategies for Taste Masking of Orodispersible Dosage Forms: Time, Concentration, and Perception.

Orodispersible dosage forms, characterized as quick dissolving and swallowing without water, have recently gained great attention from the pharmaceutical industry, as these forms can satisfy the needs of children, the elderly, and patients suffering from mental illnesses. However, poor taste by thorough exposure of the drugs' dissolution in the oral cavity hinders the effectiveness of the orodispersible dosage forms. To bridge this gap, we put forward three taste-masking strategies with respect to the intensity of time, concentration, and perception. We further investigated the raw material pr

Interaural Time Difference Perception with a Cochlear Implant and a Normal Ear.

Currently there is a growing population of cochlear-implant (CI) users with (near) normal hearing in the non-implanted ear. This configuration is often called SSD (single-sided deafness) CI. The goal of the CI is often to improve spatial perception, so the question raises to what extent SSD CI listeners are sensitive to interaural time differences (ITDs). In a controlled lab setup, sensitivity to ITDs was investigated in 11 SSD CI listeners. The stimuli were 100-pps pulse trains on the CI side and band-limited click trains on the acoustic side. After determining level balance and the delay nee

Time perception and reproduction in young adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD; n = 104) were compared with a control group (n = 64) on time estimation and reproduction tasks. Results were unaffected by ADHD subtype or gender. The ADHD group provided larger time estimations than the control group, particularly at long intervals. This became nonsignificant after controlling for IQ. The ADHD group made shorter reproductions than did the control group (15- and 60-s intervals) and greater reproduction errors (12-, 45-, 60-s durations). These differences remained after controlling for IQ and comorbid oppositional defi

Effect of time and frequency manipulation on syllable perception in developmental dyslexics.

Many people with developmental dyslexia have difficulty perceiving stop consonant contrasts as effectively as other people and it has been suggested that this may be due to perceptual limitations of a temporal nature. Accordingly, we predicted that perception of such stimuli by listeners with dyslexia might be improved by stretching them in time-equivalent to speaking slowly. Conversely, their perception of the same stimuli ought to be made even worse by compressing them in time-equivalent to speaking quickly. We tested 15 children with dyslexia on their ability to identify correctly consonant

The Motor of Time: Coupling Action to Temporally Predictable Events Heightens Perception.

Timing and motor function share neural circuits and dynamics, which underpin their close and synergistic relationship. For instance, the temporal predictability of a sensory event optimizes motor responses to that event. Knowing when an event is likely to occur lowers response thresholds, leading to faster and more efficient motor behavior though in situations of response conflict can induce impulsive and inappropriate responding. In turn, through a process of active sensing, coupling action to temporally predictable sensory input enhances perceptual processing. Action not only hones perceptio

Towards a psychological framework on time perception in patients with chronic tinnitus.

Although disabling tinnitus is a chronic auditory phantom sensation, current knowledge on time perception (i.e., subjective time) in sufferers is limited and unsystematic. This theoretical analysis provides a first approach to this topic, highlighting the heterogeneity of time perception in humans as shown in various research areas. This heterogeneity is inherently related to goal attainment. Our immediate perception of time is restricted to present moment and recent past, whereas our sense of time is mostly future-oriented and represented as our past in a mental time line. The heterogeneity o

Rise Time Perception, Phonological Processing, and Reading in Brazilian Portuguese-Speaking Schoolchildren.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Studies of people with dyslexia have pointed to the ability to perceive the amplitude envelope rise time ("beat" perception) as a possible cause of phonological processing (PhP) difficulties in this population. However, there are very few studies about the relationships between such skills in the non-dyslexic school population. METHODS: We investigated the influence of the beat perception ability on PhP and reading skills of 93 Brazilian Portuguese-speaking schoolchildren from the 3rd to the 5th year, with data on reading, phonological awareness (PhA), lexical access, phonolo

Interrelations between the perception of time and space in large-scale environments.

Interactions between perceived temporal and spatial properties of external stimuli (e.g. duration and size) suggest common neural mechanisms underlying the perception of time and space. This conclusion, however, lacks support from studies in large-scale environments, showing that judgements on travelled distances and associated travel times are independent from each other. Here, we used a different approach to test whether the perception of travelled distances is influenced by the perception of time. Unlike previous studies, in which temporal and spatial judgements were related to the same exp

Time perception in patients with major depressive disorder during vagus nerve stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Affective disorders may affect patients' time perception. Several studies have described time as a function of the frontal lobe. The activating eff ects of vagus nerve stimulation on the frontal lobe might also modulate time perception in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS: Time perception was investigated in 30 patients with MDD and in 7 patients with therapy-resistant MDD. In these 7 patients, a VNS system was implanted and time perception was assessed before and during stimulation. A time estimation task in which patients were asked "How many seconds have pa

Psychopharmacological effects of alcohol on time perception: the extended balanced placebo design.

Time perception is affected by the pharmacological action of many drugs, but the contribution of expected effects of drugs has not been considered. A new design, the extended balanced placebo design (EBPD), is presented to study both the pharmacological and expected effects of alcohol on time perception. The EBPD makes it possible to examine the effects of alcohol across a broad range of expected and pharmacological doses. By contrast, the domain of inquiry was limited to low doses of alcohol in the original balanced placebo design. The design was later modified to study higher doses, but the

Polarized Perceptions: How Time and Vaccination Status Modify Republican and Democratic COVID-19 Risk Perceptions.

Previous studies show Republicans have lower risk perceptions of COVID-19 than Democrats. Has this gap in risk perception been consistent throughout the course of the pandemic? Using longitudinal data from the Understanding America Study's Understanding Coronavirus in America longitudinal panel survey we examine how time and vaccination status have changed Republican and Democratic risk perceptions of engaging in various activities (such as grocery shopping, visiting friends and family etc.) as well as risk perceptions of infection, hospitalization, and death due to COVID-19. We find that whil

Sub-second and multi-second dopamine dynamics underlie variability in human time perception.

Aberrant interval timing in the millisecond-to-second range is a consistent feature of neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders involving striatal dysfunction, yet its neurochemical substrates in the human brain remain poorly characterised. Striatal dopamine has long been implicated in temporal processing, but evidence from animal models and human pharmacological studies has proved difficult to reconcile, in part because endogenous dopamine dynamics in humans have been inaccessible at relevant timescales. Patients with Parkinson's disease (N=5, 62-73 years; two women) completed a temporal b

Time-resolved hemodynamic responses to sentence-level speech perception, production, and self-monitoring.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has been widely used to explore the neural mechanisms underlying speech processing. However, the intertwining of perception and production that exists in real-world scenarios remains underexplored due to challenges such as gradient noise and head motion artifacts from speaking. Previous research has often employed sparse-sampling designs, pausing image acquisition intermittently to present auditory stimuli or record overt speech. While this approach mitigates some challenges, it cannot capture continuous brain activity during speech processing and d

Individual and ensemble perception in naturalistic scenes: Effects of context and presentation time.

In many everyday tasks, we must identify both single objects, as well as object ensembles. Our understanding of the mechanisms behind individual and ensemble perception comes mainly from studies conducted under very simplistic conditions. Here, we aim to further this understanding by moving toward more naturalistic environments. We tested the influence of scene context and presentation time on individual and ensemble perception. Six kitchen objects were presented in two scene contexts, either a kitchen scene or in front of a texturized background for one of three presentation times (100, 800,
