Motion sickness.

Motion sickness affects approximately 90 percent of the population at some time during life, and for many the problem is recurrent and severe. Labyrinthine-defective individuals are "immune." Adaptation is highly specific to one type of motion. Recent studies have focused on the role of the limbic system in mechanisms of motion sickness. Medications are sometimes useful, but they have a high incidence of side effects. Oral agents are ineffective after symptoms develop.

Technical Optimization Strategies for Amyloid PET Under Challenging Acquisition Conditions: A Comprehensive Narrative Review.

Amyloid PET is increasingly used to confirm cerebral amyloid burden, but standard acquisition may be compromised by head motion, limited patient cooperation, reduced effective counts, premature scan termination, or non-repeatable imaging conditions. This comprehensive narrative review used a structured evidence-mapping approach in accordance with SANRA quality criteria. A structured literature search was performed in PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science up to 15 March 2026. Eligible studies included clinical, phantom, or hybrid studies addressing acquisition-time reduction, injected-acti

Changes in segmental intervertebral motion adjacent to cervical arthrodesis: a prospective study.

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, observational. OBJECTIVES: Quantify the changes in intervertebral motion adjacent to cervical arthrodesis over time. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: One of the frequently acknowledged sequelae following anterior cervical fusion is the development of adjacent segment disease. It has been argued that a spine fusion transfers stress to adjacent levels and results in increased compensatory motion. However, there are conflicting reports as to whether this actually occurs, and most of these are in vitro or retrospective clinical studies. METHODS: Patients undergoing anterio

Toward the prediction of neurological injury from tethered spinal cord: investigation of cord motion with magnetic resonance.

Experience with spinal dysraphism has taught that spinal cord tethering will eventually produce neurological deficit. The primary diagnostic and monitoring tool, magnetic resonance (MR) scanning, almost always produces images consistent with cord tethering, even in asymptomatic or improved, previously operated patients. This presents a problem in selecting appropriate candidates for prophylactic intervention. Ideally, a method of monitoring should predict functional deterioration. Real-time ultrasonography, electrophysiological tests, and phase-motion MR studies could potentially be adapted fo

Moving base driving simulators' potential for carsickness research.

We investigated whether motion sickness analogous to carsickness can be studied in a moving base simulator, despite the limited motion envelope. Importantly, to avoid simulator sickness, vision outside the simulator cabin was restricted. Participants (N = 16) were exposed blindfolded to 15-min lateral sinusoidal motion at 0.2 Hz and 0.35 Hz on separate days. These conditions were selected to realize optimal provocativeness of the stimulus given the simulator's maximum displacement and knowledge on frequency-acceleration interactions for motion sickness. Average motion sickness on an 11-point s

Postural instability and motion sickness in a virtual moving room.

OBJECTIVE: We examined motion sickness in an oscillating virtual environment presented via a video projector system. BACKGROUND: Visible oscillation of the physical environment is known to induce both postural instability and motion sickness, but it cannot be assumed that the same phenomena will occur in a virtual simulation of such motion. METHOD: Standing participants (3 men and 9 women, 20-22 years of age) were exposed to oscillation of a virtual room. The stimulus was a computer-generated simulation of a laboratory device that is known to induce postural instability and motion sickness.

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis, gait characteristics and relation to function.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) is a chronic inflammatory arthritis that impacts biomechanical features of gait. This systematic review describes the effects of JIA on gait motion parameters and walking performance. METHODS: Six databases were searched (PubMed/Medline, Cochrane, the EBSCOHost database SPORTDiscus, Web of Science, and Embase). Studies were restricted to children with any subtype of JIA who were assessed for gait motion features (kinematic, kinetic, temporalspatial) or walking performance (velocity or distance covered); could include intervention or treatment ex

Reliability and validity of lower extremity and trunk kinematics measured with markerless motion capture during sports-related and functional tasks: A systematic review.

This study reviewed the literature regarding reliability and validity of markerless motion capture (MMC) for measuring lower extremities and trunk kinematics during sports-related and functional tasks. Articles published until 28 February 2024 were assessed. Studies were included if they assessed walking, squatting, jumping/landing, running, or cutting. After screening, 53 studies were included in the review. Variability across task characteristics, MMC systems, and statistical analyses was observed. The relative reliability of MMC, measured by intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), ranged

Characterizing cellular receptor dynamics in live fluorescence imaging using stochastic modeling and machine learning.

Cell surface receptor dynamics regulate signaling and endocytosis and can be quantified by single-particle tracking using total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy. We developed an interpretable machine-learning framework that combines geometric features of trajectories with a random forest classifier to distinguish five motion classes: Brownian motion, directed motion, fractional Brownian motion, Ornstein-Uhlenbeck motion, and continuous-time random walk. Applied to trajectories of the HIV co-receptor C-C chemokine receptor type 5 (CCR5), the method shows that stimulation with the ago

Immediate active short arc motion following extensor tendon repair.

Postoperative management of the extensor tendon injury has been altered over the past 15 years from treatment with 4 to 6 weeks of immobilization to controlled passive motion and, now, to active SAM with minimal tension and wrist tenodesis programs. The concepts of immediate motion are supported biochemically in experimental studies, and biomechanically through excursion studies, mathematical analysis of tendon excursion and force application, and study of repair tensile strengths. The results cited in this article and those reported by others demonstrate that early motion for extensor tendons

The effectiveness of various cervical orthoses. An in vivo comparison of the mechanical stability provided by several widely used models.

STUDY DESIGN: The amount of motion allowed by various cervical orthoses was compared with the amount of unrestricted neck motion in vivo. OBJECTIVES: To determine how much mechanical stability commonly used cervical orthoses provide to the wearer. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Few studies have compared quantitatively the restriction of motion from cervical orthoses that are commonly prescribed for patients. No studies have used methods allowing measurement of all three rotations throughout the range of motion in passive and active tests. Previous studies may have overstated the amount of restr

Phonoechocardiographic identification of chordal snap in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

In three patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a late systolic click following mid systolic murmur was recognized. M-mode and two-dimensional echocardiography showed the presence of systolic anterior motion of the chordae tendineae in all cases. Phonoechocardiographic studies showed that the time of the click always coincided with the endpoint of mild anterior motion of the chordae tendineae. The click was considered to be a chordal snap.

The contralateral unimpaired arm as a control for upper extremity kinematic analysis in children with brachial plexus birth palsy.

BACKGROUND: Kinematic studies of abnormal upper extremity (UE) motion provide the unique and valuable perspective of motion analysis during simulated functional tasks. However, they require comparison with healthy control data. Obtaining this control data usually entails testing a healthy population, which can be costly and time consuming, requiring separate subject inclusion criteria, recruitment, and institutional review board approval. The kinematics of the unimpaired UE in people with unilateral impairment have not been analyzed and documented. The purpose of this study was to compare UE m

Posterior Shoulder Soft Tissue Stabilization Return to Play Criteria Vary Among Investigations: A Systematic Review.

ABSTRACT: Despite increasing rates of posterior shoulder instability surgery, return-to-play (RTP) rates vary widely. There is little available literature regarding specific criteria used to allow unrestricted RTP. We aimed to identify and describe the criteria used in the existing literature for the unrestricted RTP of individuals after posterior shoulder instability surgery. A systematic review was performed from inception through September 2024, including 1366 shoulders. The criteria used and their associated frequencies were identified as follows: time (56%), strength (48%), range of motio

Feasibility of Continuous Ventricular Volumetric Quantification in Arrhythmias using Real-Time 3D CMR-MOTUS.

BACKGROUND: Conventional cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) cine sequences rely on binning reconstructions that average multiple heartbeats, an assumption that breaks down in arrhythmic patients where beat-to-beat variations lead to motion artifacts and loss of clinically relevant functional information. While two-dimensional (2D) real-time imaging can capture individual heartbeats, a stack of 2D slices is sub-optimal to map the full complexity of incoherent cardiac dynamics during arrhythmia. We investigated the feasibility of three-dimensional (3D) real-time motion field reconstruction

The differential contribution of implicit and explicit priors during motion extrapolation.

Accurately perceiving the position of moving objects is a fundamental prerequisite for interacting with the environment effectively. However, the brain is inherently "late" in doing so. By the time it encodes the position of a moving object, the object has already moved. To compensate, the brain exploits motion extrapolation, inferring the present position of an object from its past trajectory. Motion extrapolation arises from complex predictive processes, which combine sensory information with implicit and explicit priors to correctly estimate objects' positions. However, how implicit and exp

Coherent versus component motion perception in autism spectrum disorder.

Research on visual perception in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) tries to reveal the underlying mechanisms of aberrant local and global processing. Global motion perception is one way to study this aspect of ASD. We used plaid motion stimuli, which can be perceived as a coherently moving pattern, requiring feature integration, or as two transparent gratings sliding over each other. If global motion detection is impaired in ASD, this would lead to a decrease of the total time that a coherent pattern is perceived. However, in contrast to other studies in the literature, our results gave no eviden

Trunk control, motion and alignment after total knee arthroplasty: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Trunk control improves mobility, balance and quality of life early after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and is therefore considered an important parameter during the recovery process. However, little is known about trunk control, motion and alignment after TKA. Increasing our understanding aids in optimizing treatment strategies to enhance functional mobility after TKA. RESEARCH QUESTION: Does trunk control, motion and alignment return to normal after TKA and is this related to functional mobility? METHODS: Five scientific databases were searched until July 2021.
