Assessment of Commercial Off-the-Shelf Tissue Adhesives for Sealing Military-Relevant Corneal Perforation Injuries.

INTRODUCTION: Open-globe ocular injuries have increased in frequency in recent combat operations due to increased use of explosive weaponry. Unfortunately, open-globe injuries have one of the worst visual outcomes for the injured warfighter, often resulting in permanent loss of vision. To improve visual recovery, injuries need to be stabilized quickly following trauma, in order to restore intraocular pressure and create a watertight seal. Here, we assess four off-the-shelf (OTS), commercially available tissue adhesives for their ability to seal military-relevant corneal perforation injuries (C

CaproGlu: Multifunctional tissue adhesive platform.

Driven by the clinical need for a strong tissue adhesive with elastomeric material properties, a departure from legacy crosslinking chemistries was sought as a multipurpose platform for tissue mending. A fresh approach to bonding wet substrates has yielded a synthetic biomaterial that overcomes the drawbacks of free-radical and nature-inspired bioadhesives. A food-grade liquid polycaprolactone grafted with carbene precursors yields CaproGlu. The first-of-its-kind low-viscosity prepolymer is VOC-free and requires no photoinitiators. Grafted diazirine end-groups form carbene diradicals upon low

Tissue adhesive and postoperative allergic meningitis.

Adhesives containing cyanoacrylate are used in many surgical procedures, including closure of skin wounds and reinforcement of intracranial aneurysm repairs. A 61-year-old woman developed fever, neck stiffness, and cerebrospinal fluid eosinophilia after an operation for an intracranial aneurysm. We suspected allergic meningitis due to a foreign substance. To detect the cause of this disorder, we did 2-day closed patch testing with the substances thought to be possible allergens. We recorded a positive reaction to methyl-2-cyanoacrylate, the main ingredient of Biobond, the tissue adhesive used

Clinical experience with cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive.

In this paper 385 cases treated with cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive during the years 1980-1995 are studied. The indications, outcomes and complications of cyanoacrylate adhesive are investigated and the results are analysed. It is encouraging that except for three cases of ocular hypotony and two cases of microbial infection no other complications occurred. Even in desperate cases with corneal perforation greater than 3 mm and ocular infection, enucleation was avoided. The early use of a bandage contact lens, inserted just after the glue application and the coverage with topical antibiotics swi

A biologic tissue adhesive for vitreoretinal surgery.

Commercially available tissue glue was injected subretinally under mechanically induced retinal detachments in rabbit eyes resulting in chorioretinal adhesions at the injection site. After serial enucleation all eyes underwent histologic evaluation. Results were encouraging, but pooled fibrinogen is not acceptable for human use. A substitute for the pooled fibrinogen fraction, an adhesive using autologous plasma was prepared and studied after subretinal and intravitreal injection into rabbit and pig eyes. Postoperative clinical follow-up was one year for the rabbit eyes and one month for the p

Tissue adhesive therapy for corneal perforations.

The current indications for and method of application of tissue adhesive are described. A method for an expanded utilisation of tissue adhesive is discussed. To study the effect of the introduction of tissue adhesive to The Wilmer Institute in 1974, the records of 104 consecutive non-traumatic corneal perforations or descemetoceles admitted to The Wilmer Institute from 1960 to 1980 were assessed retrospectively with follow-up being obtained from records or from referral physicians for 87 of these perforations. Forty-nine percent of the cases were caused by bacterial corneal ulcers, 13% by expo

The use of tissue adhesive in corneal perforations.

Eighty patients with either corneal perforation or impending perforation were treated with the application of tissue adhesive that remained in place on the average of 50 days. Forty-four percent of these cases healed with the application of glue alone. Complications occurred in nine patients (11%). Two developed marked increase in intraocular pressure that was controlled with antiglaucoma medications and seven developed corneal infiltrates. Five of the infiltrates were culture-proven bacterial infections occurring on the average of 73 days after gluing. The relationships between diagnosis, dur

Comparative evaluation of tissue adhesives and conventional sutures in periodontal flap surgery: A randomized clinical study.

Post-surgical discomfort, delayed soft tissue healing and risk of infection remain significant challenges associated with conventional suturing methods in periodontal flap surgeries. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate four different groups (n=10 each); Group 1 - silk sutures, Group 2 - vicryl sutures, Group 3 - fibrin sealant (Tisseel) and Group 4 - isoepoxy 2-cyanoacrylate adhesives (Amcrylate) and compared effects on wound healing, postoperative discomfort and clinical outcomes in periodontitis patients. Phase I therapy was followed by full-thickness mucoperiosteal flaps elevation, deb

Effect of tissue adhesives in repairing perineal trauma during childbirth: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of tissue adhesives on perineal wound healing and pain relief in women with perineal trauma during childbirth. BACKGROUND: Due to the high incidence and severe consequences of perineal trauma during childbirth, tissue adhesives are recommended as an alternative to conventional sutures to repair perineal trauma. Although many original studies have explored the effect of tissue adhesives on perineal wound healing and pain relief in women with perineal trauma during childbirth, these studies have differed in participants, interventions and outcomes.

Evaluation of novel biodegradable three-armed- and hyper-branched tissue adhesives in a meniscus explant model.

Current treatment methods to repair meniscal tears do not bring fully satisfactory results. Tissue adhesives are considered promising alternatives, since they are easy to apply and cause minimal tissue trauma. The first aim of this study was to analyze the adhesive properties of and tissue response to two recently developed biodegradable block copolymeric three-armed- and hyper-branched tissue adhesives. The second aim was to investigate if tissue surface modification with collagenase improves the attachment of the adhesives and increases the healing potential of the tissue. Cylindrical explan

Comparison of microsuturing to the use of tissue adhesives in anastomosing sciatic nerve cuts in rats.

The purpose of this study was to investigate and to compare the effects of microsuturing to that of tissue adhesives (Tisseel) on the healing of anastomosing peripheral nerve incisions. Forty-five Wistar-Albino rats were placed in special cages and separated into three groups (n = 15). In the control group, biliteral sciatic nerves were explored but no incision was made. In the first experimental group, bilateral sciatic nerves were incised and end-to-end anastomosing was performed by microsuturing the epineurium. In the second experimental group, tissue adhesive (Tisseel) was used alone in an

Organ transudation dictates in vivo adhesion to tissues.

Fluids wetting organ surfaces are a major hurdle to secure medical devices onto internal tissues. Here we identify transudation - a fluid flow exiting at organ surfaces - as the root cause. Through in vivo experiments in a pig model, we combined transudation monitoring with adhesion tests using poly (ethylene glycol) films. We show that transudation prevents the creation of adhesive contacts and explains adhesion differences among organs. On highly transuding organs like the liver, reducing transudation by a temporary vascular occlusion induced a remarkable transition from lubricated to adhesi

Tissue adhesion after surgical interventions (Review).

Tissue adhesion after surgical procedures is a common postoperative complication that affects a significant number of patients across all surgical disciplines. In pelvic surgical procedures, second-look surgeries have revealed adhesions in more than half of all patients weeks to several months after surgery. Adhesions can be asymptomatic, but they can also cause a wide range of complications, such as severe pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, ileus and reproductive dysfunction. Undetected adhesions that lead to problems in subsequent surgical interventions are also of high clinical importanc

Switchable Adhesion of Hydrogels to Plant and Animal Tissues.

The ability to "switch on" adhesion between a thin hydrogel and a biological tissue can be useful in biomedical applications such as surgery. One way to accomplish this is with an electric field, a phenomenon termed electroadhesion (EA). Here, it is shown that cationic gels can be adhered by EA to tissues across all of biology. This includes tissues from animals, including humans and other mammals; birds; fish; reptiles (e.g., lizards); amphibians (e.g., frogs), and invertebrates (e.g., shrimp, worms). Gels can also be adhered to soft tissues from plants, including fruit (e.g., plums) and vege

Use of cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive under a diaper.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the utility of cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive (Dermabond, Ethicon, Somerville, NJ, USA; an effective means of epithelial skin closure) under a diaper (i.e. constantly exposed to bodily fluids) in 25 children (not toilet-trained) undergoing inguinal surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of charts between July 1998 and July 2000 was used to identify children who were not toilet-trained and who had undergone inguinal surgery (e.g. orchidopexy, hernia and hydrocele repair). In addition to the type of surgery, the method of closure was also assessed; in all cas

In vitro adhesion of Staphylococcus strains to rabbit tissues.

Differences in the in vitro adhesion of Staphylococcus strains on rabbit tissues were evaluated by viable unit counts and radio-labeling. Among coagulase-positive strains, two freshly isolated strains and the Cowan I strain adhered much more than the Wood 46 strain especially to peritoneum. In addition, the Smith strain, which is coagulase-positive and encapsulated, showed on rabbit peritoneum a degree of adhesion smaller than that of the Cowan I strain and similar to that of the Wood 46 strain. These quantitative results were corroborated by examination of the bacteria on thin sections of per

Injectable, self-healing hydrogel adhesives with firm tissue adhesion and on-demand biodegradation for sutureless wound closure.

Tissue adhesives have garnered extensive interest as alternatives and supplements to sutures, whereas major challenges still remain, including weak tissue adhesion, inadequate biocompatibility, and uncontrolled biodegradation. Here, injectable and biocompatible hydrogel adhesives are developed via catalyst-free o-phthalaldehyde/amine (hydrazide) cross-linking reaction. The hydrogels demonstrate rapid and firm adhesion to various tissues, and an o-phthalaldehyde-mediated tissue adhesion mechanism is established. The hydrogel adhesives show controlled degradation profiles of 6 to 22 weeks in viv
