Smoking cessation patterns, usefulness of quitting methods, and tobacco cessation motivators and barriers to quit in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Tobacco use is highly discouraged in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) due to related short and long-term health implications. We aimed to evaluate smoking cessation patterns in patients with RA. In addition, we ascertained perceptions on the usefulness of quitting methods, and perceived motivators and barriers to quit. METHODS: We surveyed adults with RA enrolled in the FORWARD Databank who self-identified as former or current tobacco users. RESULTS: Three hundred forty-eight participants completed the survey and responded to the question "do you currently smoke" (former us

Tobacco and Substance Use among Psychiatric Inpatients in a Community Hospital: Cessation Counseling, Correlates, and Patterns of Use.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological and experimental models have been applied to describe the disproportionately high prevalence of tobacco use in patients with mental illness. This observed association has become a dire public health concern. The main objective of the present study was to examine the provision of tobacco treatment strategies in a community teaching hospital serving a predominantly underserved African American population. METHODS: The study was designed as a retrospective review of eight hundred and thirty patients admitted to the inpatient psychiatric units. RESULTS: 52.2% of the e

Current Tobacco Product Use and Cessation Behaviors Among People Who Use Opioids: Implications for Integrated Harm Reduction Services.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco use, particularly cigarette smoking, is disproportionately high among people who use opioids (PWUO). Although harm reduction programs provide trusted, low-barrier, and repeated contact with PWUO, tobacco cessation support is not routinely integrated into these settings. We assessed current use of different forms of tobacco products and smoking cessation behaviors among PWUO and considered implications for integrating tobacco cessation into harm reduction services. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey among PWUO attending a syringe service program (SSP) in New H

Tobacco Use and Cessation among a Nationally Representative Sample of Men in India, 2019-2021.

Tobacco users are exposed to a higher risk of noncommunicable diseases, leading to premature mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). The future prediction indicates that tobacco-related mortality and morbidity rates will substantially increase in coming years. The study is aimed at assessing the prevalence of tobacco consumption and cessation attempts for different tobacco products among adult men in India. The study utilized information from India's latest National Family Health Survey-5 (NFHS-5) data which was conducted during 2019-21, including 988,713 adult men aged 15 years

Cue-reactivity targeted smoking cessation intervention in individuals with tobacco use disorder: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVES: Cue-reactivity is a critical step leading to the emergence of addictive psychology and the triggering of addictive behaviors within the framework of addiction theory and is considered a significant risk factor for addiction-related behaviors. However, the effect of cue-reactivity targeted smoking cessation intervention and the cue-reactivity paradigms used in the randomized controlled trials varies, which introduces more heterogeneity and makes a side-by-side comparison of cessation responses difficult. Therefore, the scoping review aims to integrate existing research and identify

Pre-implementation Assessment of Tobacco Cessation Interventions in Substance Use Disorder Residential Programs in California.

BACKGROUND: Across the United States, substance use disorder (SUD) treatment programs vary in terms of tobacco-related policies and cessation services offered. Implementation of tobacco-related policies within this setting can face several barriers. Little is known about how program leadership anticipate such barriers at the pre-implementation phase. This study used the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) during the pre-implementation stage to identify factors that may influence the implementation stage of tobacco-related cessation policies and services in residential SUD

Behavioral research contributions and needs in cancer prevention and control: tobacco use prevention and cessation.

Following a brief review of the etiology and prevalence of tobacco use and data on the effectiveness of prevention and cessation interventions, recommendations for a research agenda are outlined. It is suggested that research on youth tobacco initiation and cessation be given highest priority because of rising prevalence rates, fundamental social importance, and the widespread support for such efforts. Policy and community approaches to deterring youth tobacco use deserve particular attention. Adult intervention research should focus on health care settings and include factors that both help a

Consensus Report: 2nd European Workshop on Tobacco Use Prevention and Cessation for Oral Health Professionals.

Tobacco use has been identified as a major risk factor for oral disorders such as cancer and periodontal disease. Tobacco use cessation (TUC) is associated with the potential for reversal of precancer, enhanced outcomes following periodontal treatment, and better periodontal status compared to patients who continue to smoke. Consequently, helping tobacco users to quit has become a part of both the responsibility of oral health professionals and the general practice of dentistry. TUC should consist of behavioural support, and if accompanied by pharmacotherapy, is more likely to be successful. I

Tobacco use and cessation counseling among health professional students: Lebanon Global Health Professions Student Survey.

INTRODUCTION: The number of deaths attributable to tobacco use is rising globally. Health professionals can help reduce tobacco use by providing advice to patients regarding smoking cessation. Very few studies have collected information on tobacco use and cessation counseling training among health professional students. The purpose of this paper is to examine these issues using data from the 2005 Lebanon Global Health Professions Student Survey (GHPSS). METHODS: The 2005 Lebanon GHPSS includes nationally representative estimates of third-year students in all dental, medical, nursing, and phar

Dental school-based continuing education in tobacco use cessation counseling for oral health care providers.

The role of health care providers in patient counseling for tobacco use cessation has gained increased attention in recent years. The present survey examined the activities of dental school continuing education departments in providing continuing education in tobacco use cessation counseling to oral health care personnel. A questionnaire was sent to the director of continuing education at all U.S. and Canadian dental schools. The results indicate that few continuing education programs have been or currently are being offered. Respondents to the survey perceived little interest in this topic am

Addressing Tobacco Use in Underserved Communities Outside of Primary Care: The Need to Tailor Tobacco Cessation Training for Community Health Workers.

Individuals from communities with a low socioeconomic status have the highest rates of tobacco use but are less likely to receive assistance with quitting. Community health workers (CHWs) are well-positioned to engage these communities; however, CHWs face barriers in receiving relevant tobacco cessation training. The objective of this study was to conduct a mixed methods needs assessment to describe tobacco practices and the desire for training among CHWs. After incorporating CHW feedback, we developed a needs assessment survey to understand knowledge, practices, and attitudes about tobacco ce

Ongoing tobacco use in women who experience homelessness and unstable housing: A prospective study to inform tobacco cessation interventions and policies.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use is common in people who experience homelessness. However, despite biological differences in use by sex and lower quit rates in women, research in homeless and unstably housed (HUH) women is sparse. We identified correlates of use specific to this population, with the goal of informing tobacco cessation programs tailored for HUH women. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study among HUH women recruited from San Francisco homeless shelters, street encampments, free meal programs and low-income hotels. Between June 2016 and January 2019, study participants completed six m
