Using objects of obsession as token reinforcers for children with autism.

We assessed the effectiveness of using objects of obsession as token reinforcers to increase task performance for children with autism. The use of obsessions as tokens (e.g., letter "A", a picture of a train) was compared with the use of typical tokens (e.g., stars, happy faces). A multiple baseline design across children with a reversal within child was used. Data were collected on percentage correct of task responses and on the occurrence of inappropriate behaviors during work sessions. Results indicated that percentage correct on task performance was higher when objects of obsession were us

Analysis of a reinforcement/time-out treatment package to control severe aggressive and destructive behaviors in a multihandicapped, rubella child.

The display of acting-out behaviors in the form of aggression and property destruction represent serious management problems displayed by many developmentally disabled persons. The present study evaluated the application of reinforcement and isolation time-out procedures to treat severe aggressive/destructive behavior of a 15-year-old multi-impaired rubella child. In addition to documenting intervention effects, this study provided a component analysis of the reinforcement and time-out procedures, evaluated maintenance of treatment gains, and obtained measures of staff acceptability. [Financial incentives on weight loss after rehabilitation].

INTRODUCTION: Increasing rates of obesity and associated diseases and their consequences make the implementation of preventive and counteracting measures necessary. The aim of this study was the examination of the long-term effects of financial incentives on weight loss in obese patients and the identification of influencing factors. METHODS: 700 obese patients were randomly assigned to one of three study conditions: For reaching a pre-defined target weight within 4 months they were rewarded with Euro 150, Euro 300 or not at all. The effect of the incentives on weight loss in different subgro

Altered reinforcement mechanisms in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

The present study tested eight boys with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and 12 normal boys (comparison group), aged 7-12 years, to investigate the hypothesis that ADHD is associated with a steeper and shorter delay-of-reinforcement gradient than is normal. A two-component schedule of reinforcement was used to deliver trinkets or coins as reinforcers in a game-like test. One component was marked by a signal. During this period reinforcers (coins or trinkets) were delivered every 30 s. This component is called a 30-s fixed interval (FI) schedule of reinforcement and measures cha

Analysis of free-time contingencies as positive versus negative reinforcement.

Providing a short break contingent on completed work may increase responding through positive reinforcement (e.g., access to preferred activities) or negative reinforcement (e.g., escape form work). In this investigation, three analyses conducted with a boy with profound mental retardation showed that (a) a 20-s break increased responding more than a positive reinforcer (cola) did, and (b) the reinforcing effect of a 20-s break were affected by the availability of positive reinforcers during the break were affected by the availability of positive reinforcers during the break.

Successful behavioral treatment of polydipsia in a schizophrenic patient.

Behavioral treatment of a 35 year old female with chronic schizophrenia and water intoxication with seizures was conducted on an inpatient psychiatric unit. Treatment included frequent daily weights, restricted fluid intake, positive reinforcement for program compliance, and time-out from reinforcement following significant weight gain or other specified program violations. The final 6 months of the 30 month treatment program were a maintenance phase during which most contingencies were faded and all fluid restrictions were removed. There was no reported recurrence of polydipsia after 18 month

An analysis of vocal stereotypy and therapist fading.

A functional analysis for a boy with Down syndrome and autism suggested that vocal stereotypy was maintained by automatic reinforcement. The analysis also showed that instructions and noncontingent attention suppressed vocal stereotypy. A treatment package consisting of noncontingent attention, contingent demands, and response cost effectively reduced vocal stereotypy. The treatment package remained effective even when noncontingent attention was removed, making the procedure easier to implement. Also, the presence of the therapist in the room with the participant was faded systematically. Aft

Low-cost contingency management for treating cocaine- and opioid-abusing methadone patients.

This study evaluated the efficacy of a low-cost contingency management (CM) procedure in reducing concurrent cocaine and opioid use among methadone patients. Forty-two patients were randomly assigned to 12 weeks of standard treatment or standard treatment plus CM. CM patients eamed the opportunity to draw from a bowl and win prizes ranging from $1 to $ 100 in value for submitting samples negative for cocaine and opioids. Patients in the CM condition achieved longer durations of continuous abstinence than patients in the standard treatment condition, and these effects were maintained throughout

[Physical activity, nutritional counseling and psychological guidance in treatment of obese children. A controlled follow-up study over six months].

BACKGROUND: Only multi-faceted treatment programs may influence childhood obesity. METHODS: Thus our program consists of physical exercise, dietary counseling (but no caloric reduction) and psychological support. 17 obese children, aged 7 to 12 years, participated in this combined out-patient therapy program. The children were compared to a control group of 17 obese children who only received an initial dietary instruction. RESULTS: After 6 months program children showed a very significant decrease of percentage overweight (-11.5%), whereas control children showed an increase of +2.8%. In co

Behavioral assessment of the reinforcing effect of exercise in women with anorexia nervosa: further paradigm development and data.

OBJECTIVE: To use a Progressive Ratio (PR) computerized "work" paradigm to measure course and correlates of exercise motivation in in-patients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN). METHOD: Sixteen inpatients with AN participated in a PR task assessing the relative reinforcing effect of two different increments of cash versus the opportunity to exercise for upto 30 min, twice; at low weight, and, for n = 10 participants, after weight restoration. RESULTS: There was a trend toward a higher work for exercise with 2 versus 5 increments of cash as the alternative reinforcer. Exercise breakpoint did not dif

[The effect of social and monetary reward on inhibitory control in boys with hyperkinetic conduct disorder].

OBJECTIVE: Social reinforcement can improve inhibitory control in boys with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), suggesting that hyperkinetic conduct disorder (ADHD + CD/ODD), a combination of ADHD and conduct disorder (CD)/oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), might show similar improvements. This study investigated the effects of social and monetary reward on response inhibition in boys with ADHD + CD/ODD compared to healthy controls. METHOD: An incentive go/no-go task was applied. We hypothesized that the control group (n = 17) would show greater improvements in inhibitory contr

The effectiveness of and preschoolers' preferences for variations of multiple-schedule arrangements.

Multiple schedules of reinforcement have been used to teach children to recruit attention only when it is available, thereby minimizing disruptive requesting during instructional activities. This procedure involves alternating periods of continuous reinforcement (CRF) with periods of extinction and correlating each period with a distinct and continuous discriminative stimulus. The present study evaluated the effectiveness of and children's preferences for multiple schedules in which (a) two different stimuli, one correlated with reinforcement (S+) and another correlated with extinction (S-), w

Reducing overselective attention to compound visual cues with extended training in adolescents with severe mental retardation.

Because of the devastating impact a disturbance in responding to multiple cues can have on a child's development, this investigation determined whether computer touch-screen technology could be utilized to improve the attentional skills of students with severe developmental disabilities after attentional deficits were initially identified. In particular, we assessed whether establishing prior reinforcement histories for separate stimuli would control how adolescents with severe mental retardation attended to visual compounds when extended training was given. Initially, prior reinforcement cont

Functional assessment and treatment of aggressive and destructive behaviors in a child victim of physical abuse.

This case study describes the functional assessment and treatment of aggressive and destructive behaviors in a 14-year-old male child with a history of physical abuse. Evaluation was performed in a classroom within a residential school setting. Functional assessment in forms of indirect and descriptive methods was used to generate hypotheses regarding sources of behavioral control. A treatment plan that combined multi-level differential reinforcement of other behavior (DRO) and positive reinforcement for task completion was implemented based on the outcome of functional assessment. Treatment w

Contingency management improves outcomes in cocaine-dependent outpatients with depressive symptoms.

Despite depressive symptoms being very common among patients seeking treatment for cocaine dependence, few studies have examined the effects of depressive symptoms on cocaine outpatient treatment outcomes, and there is even less research in the context of Contingency Management (CM). The purpose of this study was to assess the main and interactive effects of co-occurring depressive symptoms on CM outcomes. Cocaine-dependent individuals (N = 108) were randomized to Community Reinforcement Approach (CRA) or CRA plus CM in two outpatient community clinical settings. Participants were categorized

Effects of alcohol and performance incentives on immediate working memory.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The Sternberg Memory Scanning task was used to test the hypotheses that immediate working memory (WM) would be impaired during moderate rising blood alcohol concentrations (BACs), and provision of a rewarding incentive for good performance under alcohol would counteract this impairment. METHODS: Two groups (n=18) of social drinkers received either 0.62 g/kg alcohol (A) or a placebo (P). Reward (verbal feedback and money) for good performance was provided to another pair of alcohol and placebo groups (n=18) (AR and PR). All participants completed two tests when BACs i

Effects of an alternative reinforcer on intravenous heroin self-administration by humans.

Five heroin-dependent research volunteers, maintained on divided daily oral morphine doses, participated in an inpatient study designed to evaluate intravenous (i.v.) heroin self-administration when money ($10, $20 or $40) was concurrently available. Each morning participants received a single injection of heroin (placebo, 6.25, 12.5, 25, or 50 mg/70 kg, i.v.) and each afternoon, they had the opportunity to self-administer all or part of the morning dose. Participants responded under a progressive-ratio schedule (50, 100, ..., 2800) during a 10-trial self-administration task. During each trial

An analysis of the reinforcing properties of hand mouthing.

Hand mouthing often has been described as a stereotypic response that is maintained by nonsocial (automatic) reinforcement; however, data supporting this conclusion can be found in relatively few studies. This series of studies presents an experimental analysis of conditions associated with the maintenance of hand mouthing. In Experiment 1, a functional analysis was conducted for 12 individuals who engaged in chronic hand mouthing, to determine whether the behavior is usually maintained independent of social contingencies. Results obtained for 10 subjects were consistent with an automatic rein
