Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare neoplasm of the serosal membranes. MPM usually manifests as local invasion, rarely with distant haematogenous metastases in different organs. Few cases of tongue metastasis have been documented. Here, we report the case of a 68-year-old man diagnosed with malignant pleural epithelioid mesothelioma together with a simultaneous tongue lesion, which was found to be metastatic malignant mesothelioma. Tongue metastasis from MPM is rare and the oral symptoms it causes could be an early sign of clinical manifestation. For patients with oral symptoms and

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), is a rare, autosomal recessive disease with sun sensitivity and multiple neoplasms in association with reduced DNA repair. As a reflection of the clinical consequences of deficient DNA repair, XP serves as a model for determining the effects of proficient DNA repair. To estimate the risk of developing neoplasms in XP, we abstracted reports of 726 XP patients (from 41 countries) published from 1874 to 1982. Despite limitations of a literature survey, the XP patients under age 20 years had an estimated 2000-fold increase in frequency of basal cell and squamous cell ca

By definition, choristomas are normal tissues found in anomalous topography. The cartilaginous features of these lesions are rare in the soft tissues of the oral cavity. The majority of cartilaginous choristomas of the tongue--the primary site of emergence of the oropharynx--are associated with adipose, fibrous or bone tissues--apart from that, only a few of these were confirmed by an immunohistochemical study. The neoplasm exclusively composed of chondromatous tissue is extremely rare in the tongue. This paper reports the clinical, surgical and pathological characteristics of a cartilaginous

BACKGROUND: The cancer which appears in the mobile portion of the tongue is the most common neoplasm of the oral cavity. The objective of this study was to analyse oral tongue cancer epidemiology in a population of 610 patients diagnosed between 1990 and 2008 and detailed in the Tumour Registry of the Madrid region.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis based on the following variables provided in the Tumour Registry was achieved: age, gender, histology, stage, location, treatment. Descriptive and analytic statistics with these variables, using Pearson's Chi-square test to study the

Chondrosarcomas are common tumors of the canine appendicular and axial skeleton; however, extraskeletal chondrosarcomas are very rare. Herein we report a case of extraskeletal chondrosarcoma in the tongue of a dog. Histologically, glossal skeletal muscle was infiltrated and effaced by islands of cartilage and streams of spindle-shaped cells. Retrospective analysis of 236 tongue masses submitted to the Iowa State University surgical biopsy service between 2011 and 2019 showed that the majority of submitted tongue masses are either non-neoplastic or benign, with granular cell tumors identified a

Osseous lesions of the tongue, also referred to as osseous choristomas, are benign growths of bony tissue. These lesions are not true neoplasms but rather represent growth of normal tissue at an abnormal location. Clinically, they appear as exophytic masses of the tongue, and they are treated by surgical excision. Lingual osseous choristomas are rare entities, with only 71 reported cases in the literature. We present the case of a lingual osseous choristoma of the tongue base in a 21-year-old female. Of the cases of lingual osseous choristoma reported in the literature, ours is only the fifth

The aim of this article is to describe the first report of a "pull-through" submental approach for excision of a tongue tumor, performed by Giorgio Regnoli in 1838 on a 14-year-old girl affected by a huge swelling of the tongue, which obstructed the upper airway and hindered swallowing and speech. Regnoli made a midline submental incision, divided the mylohyoid muscle and the oral mucosa, and entered the floor of the mouth. The tongue was pulled into the neck through the newly created opening, and the tumor was circumscribed by thread loops to prevent bleeding and was excised. Then the tongue

Benign fibrous histiocytoma (BFH) is a benign fibrohistiocytic neoplasm. It is documented to occur in all anatomic sites with a strong predilection for sun exposed skin surfaces. Intra oral occurrence of BFH comprises a lesser percentage of cases with tongue being the least reported site. We report a case of BFH of the tongue with an emphasis on its histogenesis and a review of the literature.

Chondrosarcoma of the head and neck is uncommon and reported to constitute between 1% to 12% of all chondrosarcoma cases.1, 2, 3 Extraskeletal chondrosarcoma of the tongue is an extremely rare type of neoplasm with only three previously reported cases. The underlying origin of chondrosarcoma arising in the tongue is controversial. We describe a case of a low-grade chondrosarcoma arising in the base of the tongue of a 54-year-old woman with a central area of dedifferentiation. The patient was treated with complete surgical resection with no evidence of recurrence at 1 year follow-up.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a malignant neoplasm arising from the salivary glands. It accounts for 10-15% of all salivary gland neoplasms, representing 1-2% of malignant neoplasms of the head and neck. It is characterized by slow growth, diffuse invasion and potential to produce distant metastases, mainly to the lungs and bone. We present a case of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the base of tongue treated with ultrasound guided transcutaneous interstitial photodynamic therapy (PDT) as a salvage treatment.

Primary intestinal-type adenocarcinoma (ITAC) of the tongue is a rare neoplasm. The case of a 59-year-old male with a painless mass in the dorsum of the oral tongue diagnosed as primary ITAC is reported here. The particular characteristic of the case was the patient's long-term medical history of 40years. The patient underwent resection of the tongue carcinoma through a midline approach and direct suture, with postoperative chemoradiotherapy. Immunohistochemical staining indicated that the tumour was positive for CK20 and negative for CK7. A review of the English-language literature was perfor

Lipomas and hemangiomas are well-known benign lesions of the body. However, their occurrence in the oral cavity is rare. Lipoma accounts for 1-4% of benign neoplasms of mouth affecting predominantly the buccal mucosa, floor of mouth and tongue. Hemangiomas occur mostly on the lips, buccal mucosa, tongue, and palate. Lipomas when superficially placed show yellowish surface discoloration and hemangiomas usually have reddish blue to deep blue color. Here, we report an unusual case of benign tumor occurring in the buccal vestibule.

Primary mucosal melanoma is a biologically aggressive neoplasm, which is rarely located at the base of the tongue. The absence of early signs and symptoms, the lack of an evidence-based treatment, the early development of metastases and high rates of local recurrence contribute to the overall poor prognosis of these melanomas. This paper reports the case of a 66-year-old male presenting with local recurrence of a primary melanoma of the base of the tongue.

Congenital rhabdomyosarcoma of the tongue is exceedingly rare. Fibromatosis of the tongue is also rare, and very difficult to distinguish from the spindle cell variant of rhabdomyosarcoma. Both appear histologically as spindle neoplasms replacing normal striated musculature of the tongue. The treatment protocol for the former has been developed by the Intergroup Rhabdomyosarcoma Studies (IRS) I-IV and requires surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. For fibromatosis, complete surgical excision is usually adequate without additional therapy, although some cases of aggressive fibromatosis also req

We investigated the susceptibility of 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4-NQO)-induced tongue carcinogenesis in male CB6F1-Tg-rasH2 @Jcl mice (Tg mice). The Tg mice were administered 4-NQO (20 p.p.m. in drinking water) for 2, 4, 6 or 8 weeks, and thereafter they were untreated up to week 24. At week 24, a higher incidence (80%) of tongue neoplasm with dysplasia was noted in the mice that received 4-NQO for 8 weeks in comparison with the other groups (20% incidence for each) treated with 4-NQO for 2, 4 and 6 weeks. Esophageal tumors also developed in the Tg mice were 4-NQO. Immunohistochemical observat

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an uncommon spindle cell neoplasm with unpredictable behavior. It was originally described in the pleura, but is now known to occur in various locations. SFT of the tongue is rare, with only four cases on record. An SFT of the anterolateral part of the left side of the tongue, which occurred in a 48 year-old man is recorded. The tumor was resected and the patient remains free of recurrence 3 years postoperatively.

Involvement of the tongue by a synovial sarcoma (SS) is an extremely rare event; there have only been 13 cases previously reported. The authors present herein a case of monophasic SS arising in the tongue in a 32-year-old woman. The neoplasm expressed cytokeratins AE1-3, OSCAR, and EMA as well as Bcl-2 and TLE1. Molecular analysis indicated that the patient tested positive for the SYT/SS2 fusion transcript.

Benign tumors or tumor-like lesions of the tongue are uncommon lesions that comprise a heterogeneous group of neoplasms. Although there are a variety of benign tumors or tumor-like lesions, the imaging appearance of these diseases is not well defined because of a paucity of scientific literature on this topic. Most benign tongue tumors usually appear as submucosal bulges located in the deep portion of the tongue. Their true features and extent may only be identified on cross-sectional images such as CT and MRI. Thus, CT and MRI play an important role in the diagnosis of these unusual lesions.

Squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) account for approximately 95% of all oral malignant neoplasms and for about 38% of all malignant head and neck tumors, especially affecting the tongue and lips. The aim of this study was to evaluate the immunohistochemical expression of MMP-9 and VEGF in oral SCC according to the occurrence of metastasis. Eighteen cases of tongue SCC without metastases and 17 cases of tongue SCC with metastases were subjected to immunohistochemical methods. High immunohistochemical expression of MMP-9 and VEGF by neoplastic cells and stroma was observed in tongue SCCs at the inv
